1. These coils are wonderful things. Just one tiny problem. Getting the two apart. Usually they end up in pieces over the other side of the room. Anyone else have a problem with these. :o

You could always get mozzie screens fitted to your windows and doors. They're quite cheap, and you don't get that burning smell in the house. :D

2. Yeah, mosquito coils and condom boxes must be the two single most frustrating things to unpack. Oh, and then there's Sang Som bottles where the thread of the cap gets ruined and the thing just spins idle. I'd say these three things are the biggest source of aggravation to my life in Thailand.

mosquito coils, condom boxes, Sang Som bottle caps... life's a bitch! :o

3. My agenda is to escape the shit I am in!!! I am cautious and will not invest money in Thailand, or commit to a woman for a year or two ( sick parrot or not )

:o

Another "escape" artist!

Doesn't anyone else come here because they like the place for what it is, and not because they've got some problems back in their home country that they don't want to face up to?

4. Maybe the real lesson is not to ask a monk questions about women......

:D Good point, but who should be asked?

Any 60+ year old farang with a 20+ year old wife without any tattoos.

BTW, what do the tattoos have anything to do with the relationship? :o

It's was thinking that "sans tattoo" could mean a less "economics related" arrangement (as you yourself so rightly pointed out), and so any information gleaned from such a couple may be of use.

Or maybe not. :D

This is a silly topic. And I haven't a clue.

5. OP, thank you very much for posting about this, it is very important. This policy is an outrage and goes right to the top of a long list of things in this country that are completely and totally out of step with the civilized world. I'm sure that the "Thailand is perfect" people will get on here and pounce on you pal about how this is OK

From Nok Air's terms and conditions:

Special Assistance : Acceptance for carriage of incapacitated persons, persons with illness, person with disabilities or other people requiring wheelchair is subject to prior arrangement with us. Such passengers are required to walk to/from the cabin by themselves since the wheelchair is provided until the boarding gate. For safety reason, we may refuse carriage of passengers that we deem to be not in an appropriate condition.
6. I believe you're American, let's look at the problems in Thailand that prevent you from laughing here

Yes, ColPyat, please tell us what we can do to help make you laugh. :o

For a start, reading some of this rubbish might help! :D

7. I now know why I will never move to a village.

Hear Hear! ...

Of course in the city you'd never see your GF's bag and phone and money again anyways ... no matter what!

That all depends (as I am certain it does in the villages too).

A friend of mine whose memory is almost as hopeless as my own, left his wallet with 22 crisp 1000 bills and a credit card on the desk of a pharmacy in the largest shopping center in Chiang Mai.

He came back 5 hours later to find that a Thai customer had turned it in to the security guy, and all the money plus the credit card was still there.

Luck is important.

True story: I was waiting to use an ATM - two Thai girls were taking their time. After they'd finished they walked away while the machine was beeping at them. I took out their ATM card and turned round to wave it at them, but they'd already realised they'd forgotten it. Lovely smiles from them - I guess that's why they call it "LoS" :o

8. Now if it was one farang that was against double pricing, another fed up with the crime rate etc., another fed up with something else; I totally agree with you. But it's not. It seems to be the same whingers all the time. Maybe I'm just trying to protect a loved one,( Thailand) and see things in a different light. But I'll bet you one thing. All these people that pick on the slightest little thing, came here first on holiday and loved the place.

I neither hate nor love Thailand, it simply has been home for a very long time. Most people i know who *loved* Thailand ended up hating the place as soon as the first unpleasant events happened to them personally. I anyhow have difficulties who someone can "love" a country... :o

And i don't understand what your problem is with someone disliking double pricing. And having certain problems with the rising crime rate in Thailand is IMO perfectly normal, complaining about the present political situation is natural as well, it is not just farang who do that, most Thais nowadays do the same as soon as they start opening their mouth.

If anyone believes that Thailand is the "Land of Smile" of the tourist pamphlets, that anyone should prepare for a serious shock. Thailand is a land in serious trouble, not accepting that Thailand is violent, corrupt, and has an entirely unfair social sythem is being blind towards reality, and most Thais would straight away agree with this asessment.

That though has nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that one can have a comparatively very pleasant life here, if one has enough money and cultural tolerance.

Excellent post, ColPyat.

9. The police can absolutely, 100% find the phone if the thief turns it on regularly (best if they leave it on), if you can supply them with the "emi" number on the side of the phone's original box. Have seen it happen more than once when the phone belongs to anyone of any importance. Good luck getting them to do it for the average joe though.

:D

<off topic> So Heng, do you come from St Kitts or Nevis? Just interested, is all, and how you ended up in Pratunam. :o

10. And Guesthouse....not a bad suggestion.

Obviously the critical thought did get left at the airport.

:o Comprehension not his strong point?

Might we be mindful that this forum, forums like this and the newspaper letter pages are perhaps the only places where foreigners in Thailand get the chance to express an opinion.

To my mind the problem is not that some people moan, but that so many people, their skills, education and experience are waisted by a system that denies them the rights to take part in the communities they live in.

Couldn't agree more. What a waste of my project management skills, etc. I'm quite happy to lounge around doing nothing all day, but all that free time does allow me to think about all the crap that is going on around me.

As someone said a long, long time ago, we criticise because we love the place. We want it to be better. We know it can be better.

If we didn't give a damnn, we wouldn't bother criticising.

And those who "absolutely adore the place" need to take off their rose-coloured glasses, take a few deep breaths and look around them. Your "everything's grand" attitude won't help Thailand in the long run.

11. i was just wondering if there was a direct correlation between how loud & fast people have to drive a bike down quiet roads and the size of the "lunchbox" they pack.

it also seems that the louder the slash cuts pipes are the cheaper the bike.

I am not moaning at people having loud exhauts as have had 52mm termi's on one of mine and they were really loud BUT i never would rev the <deleted> of the thing late at night whe leaving a bar in a residential area nor would i tear down the steet at ridiculous speeds. the really sad thing is they all need to virtually stop to go round a corner :o

i'll step off my soap box now as i feel a lot better for that little rant :D

The loudness of the bike is indirectly proportional to the size of the brain. :D

12. I must be a in a maudlin mood today,

but I remember someone telling me about a woman and child that they had seen that day sat out in the mid-day sun on a footbridge somewhere in Bangkok begging for money

and both the mother and the child were weeping uncontrollably and the woman's teardrops were falling onto the child's face.

For your own sake, bulmercke, log off NOW! Leave that internet cafe! Run! Find somewhere where people are laughing, having fun! Talk to them!! Save yourself, bulmercke, before it's too late! :o

13. Nothing to do with Thailand whatsoever... BUT the saddest story I ever heard was of a rich man who used to fly home after work by helicopter. One day, after the helicopter landed, his small boy ran out to greet him. The man picked the boy up, lifted him in the air and killed him on the rotor blades.

14. Speaking about the US, 1 in 3 people there think the sun revolves around in world :D

Oh really? And would you mind sharing your source of information?

Kat, take our word for it, the Earth definately moves around the sun, I don't think Donz needs to verify the fact. :D

:o

I got a call once from someone who wanted to know if I was "going down the pub tonight". I explained that as I was 10,000 miles away in Australia, it was quite unlikely. Besides, it's now tomorrow.

15. Well my food budget works out at 200 per day on average

I don't eat much western food (just the odd pizza once or twice a month)

Breakfast - 30 baht

Lunch - 50 baht

Dinner - 50 baht

Drinks for the day - 70 baht (with meals)

Wow! 70 baht on drinks! Steady on, old chap.
