  1. Social security income is taxable.
It wasn't at first. Then it was partially included in gross income over a certain large amount. None of my SS is taxed.

I meant it is included in the pool of taxable income if you make enough to be taxed. I wasn't aware that only a portion of it is added to other income. What portion is that?

If the only income you received during 2008 was your social security or the SSEB portion of tier 1 railroad retirement benefits, your benefits generally are not taxable and you probably do not have to file a return. If you have income in addition to your benefits, you may have to file a return even if none of your benefits are taxable.

Base amount. Your base amount is:

$25,000 if you are single, head of household, or qualifying widow(er),

$25,000 if you are married filing separately and lived apart from your spouse for all of 2008,

$32,000 if you are married filing jointly, or

$-0- if you are married filing separately and lived with your spouse at any time during 2008.

  2. I had a friend who earned a Ph.D. in bacteriology at Edinburgh (not the uni in Texas). Good school; one of the best. Since 1994, he has only worked as a bag-boy at the grocer's, but he had his prostate cancer cured at the best cancer hospital in the world: Houston, Texas :)

    It doesn't matterrrrr.

  3. The "English only" movement in the USA is not official, and is spearheaded by racists. Beside the point.

The "Thai only" movement in Thailand is very strong even though Thai alphabet and language is spoken only by Thais and is very difficult to speak and read. Very few Thais can teach Thai well - maybe 10% of Thai teachers. Most Thais don't usually want to learn English. Nice people - but I don't understand them.

  4. We lived there 2.5 years. The lake is a complete set of controlled canals. No flooding, no snakes. Scenic. Not very noisy unless you can see the taxiway. You can buy homes there if anybody's selling. Last year they still had security and maintenance.

  5. Let's see if I understand this. Thaksin must be granted this pardon for a crime he committed and for which he never served a day in jail or admitted his guilt, by some illegal plea. And if he doesn't get his pardon, all his ill-gained untaxed profit, and a return to power, he will overthrow the government and rape and pillage, and the armed forces must obey Thaksin....

  6. I remember when Evangelical Puritans thought "gosh" and "gee" were curse words. Mama said the F word without misspelling it at age 79 - she thought Catholics could say that by 2002.

    Shucks. Darn.

  7. Toshi: Good on you. More people need to do like this. I too have been at the scene of an accident and had to call 191, luckily nobody accused me of anything.

    ;;;;

Blondie: Luckily some cats have nine lives, though they come through a little worse for wear.

14,000 baht worse....The lady was very nice, later. They're only spineless bad Buddhists for a few hours. And she dressed well.
