  1. Hi

I'm interested in learning basic conversational Thai. So, not the usual "how long you here for" and "where you from" sort of Thai, but equally I'm not interested in being able to hold philosophical conversations - even if I could!

I need something with structure, organized for the fastest possible result. I'm not keen on on-line learning and I doubt if I could afford 1:1 tuition.

I'm on a budget, so haven't got a huge amount to spare, let alone waste. Ideally I would also like to learn to read Thai to become self sufficient in being able to progress.

My current abilities are appalling, with maybe 300 words in total. So, not a complete novice but not far off.

Anyone got any recommendations or thoughts?

    Cheers-

  2. The Pattaya haters do make me laugh.

Of course I appreciate that they're different with important and highly paid jobs, as are their HiSo wives, but you know, to everyone else the world over, they're all probably regarded as degenerate sexpats

As far as I am concerned if Pattaya wasn't a complete sleazepit, then why the hell would I want to be there? wouldn't be much fun would it?

  3. I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but there is a government consultation ongoing at the moment to allow free NHS treatment to expats who have paid at least 7 years of NI insurance contributions.

It's very likely to be approved later this year or next year.

  4. @ Cypress Hill,

The law is the law, neither myself, the law abiding citizens on this board nor the RTP give a damn if you think that it is archaic or not.

The reason that why people complain is that we are law abiding and we have to bend over backwards to secure our visas and work permits every year.

At the other end of the (evolutionary) scale you have scum who will bend every rule and break laws for there own means and with no intention of trying to go legit.

You are trying to say that if someone else breaks the law then everyone has the right to break the law.

What kind of an updragging did you have?

In the words of Edward Burke "In order for evil to flourish, all that is required is for good men to do nothing."

    @ notforme,

You said the following “You are doing what hundreds of people come and do here every year with no problem so go for it.”

So you are actually suggesting (in fact encouraging) that the OP should break the law.

Further to that you actually openly admit on a public forum to breaking the law when you were in Thailand before (are you absolutely off your rocker)?

If either of you two numpties want to stay on this board as members, I suggest that you read the board rules and engage you brain before posting.

You sound like a fun type of guy.

  5. From next month I am planning on spending 3 months in Thailand followed by 3 months working in the UK, repeating for maybe a year until moving permanently to Thailand.

My issue is paying the monthly condo electricity bill. Currently a friend looks after it for me, but it would be much better if I could either make over payments or preferably pay via standing order from my Kasikorn account.

Does anyone have any knowledge of how to set this up?

    TIA

  6. Agree with the poster who said HE should have been on the left hand side, closest to the oncoming traffic, whilst SHE should have been on the right and more protected. This is just common courtesy.

There is no actual proof that the bike rider was either drunk or even over the limit, lacking this proof the OP and his girlfriend were at least partly responsible for this accident.

Of course the police response and action was pathetic.

  7. Sorry I'm not following

Does this mean interest earned from fixed deposits are not liable to tax??

Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect Thailand

"Everyone has a personal allowance of THB 150k, locals and foreigners, that means that the first THB 150k of income derived from within Thailand is free of tax".

"BUT, it only applies to fixed term/rate products" plus other resident/national allowances.

So yes, fixed rate savings products are taxable but you can reclaim the tax at the end of the tax year, from the Tax Authority.

    Clear.

Hi pardon my ignorance. If tax is reclaimable, why collect in the first place? Its like asking a tiger to spit out his food in the mouth.

Not only the tax authority has more work to do, we have to waste time to go there as well.

You seriously expect the Thai tax authorities to track each individuals tax obligation as opposed to relying on people to claim tax paid within their tax free allowance?

Which countries in the world act like this?
