  1. There is a rental shop on Soi Buakhau. It's on the left about half way going from Soi Diana to Pattaya Tai. DVDs 30 baht a night, originals not copies.

  2. It's strange at the moment i get a lot of pixellation on channels 122 124 130 133 which makes them unwatchable but most others are OK. If it was a signal problem i would have thought it would affect all channels. It's mainly the HD channels that i watch so if it continues it will be bye bye Truevisions and hello CTH.

  3. I think it's worth paying a bit more to get an LED TV. I have seen the LG 55LM6200 for around 40,000 baht. It's a 55 in LED 3D smart tv with very good specs. I think Power Buy at the top of Pattaya Klang are giving even better deals sub 40,000.

  4. Consider that that satellite is at 103 degrees south , this is nearly 180 degrees opposite those ubc dishes you see everywhere.

103 degrees south? I dont think so. The measurement is degrees east of south for TV satellites visible here, and degrees west of south for satellites that serve the US etc, and both east and west of south for satellites that serve the EU, and so on.

And if one geostationary comms satellite is 180 degrees distant from another then it is on the other side of the planet, and hence both of them cannot possibly be visible from the same point on the Earth's surface. Separation of 65 degrees or so is about the most that is generally usable for domestic TV satellites and domestic installations, and a few degrees more for large dish installations such as those used by the military or broadcasters.

I understood the Truevisions satellite was at 240 degrees (ie pointing south west) and the CTH at 112 degrees (ie pointing south east). Surely at any point in Pattaya you can face the sky at any angle. It's important to me because my balcony only faces north and east. (maybe south east).

  5. Hi Chris.

Isigned up for mine yesterday, was 3,500 naht for dish, set top box and installation, then 899 baht a month,or cheaper if u want to pay a full 12 months up front

The office is near the top of pattaya thai, heading towards Sukhumvit,on the right, and says CTH office on the window/door.They speak english and seem a decent company,Also cable out soon but i want mine in before Aug 17th.

I have reduced my true vision payment from Platinum to Gold, which is 1,500 baht and will cancell if CVTH is good, and they have 147 channels i think, even though its football mainly i want.

Forgot to say, they are installing 2pm on Monday, so quick too.

Thanks for that. Could you let us all know what the picture/quality is like after installation. I have Truevisions Gold but pay 1750 a month and am fed up with the lousy reception on most of the HD channels. Will move to CTH if it's OK.

  6. Can anyone recommend a satellite dish installer in the Pattaya/Jomtien area to get the new CTH service (and EPL). Has anyone had it installed yet, what was the cost? I understand the dish faces south-east 112 degrees.

The CTH website is not very helpful (especially if you don't read thai) as to how to get the service.

  7. I've just bought the Nexus 10 (for the great price of 9,900 baht). It's brill, much better than my ipad2. Although there is no space for a micro SD card you can attach USB sticks (with a 100 baht lead) which gives, in effect, unlimited cheap storage. Add to that the best resolution screen in the world, 2 front facing speakers and a quality build there is no beating it for that money. I was thinking of the Sony Xperia tablet Z but they want 23,000 for that !!!

  8. From Bangkok you have to point your dish to 112 degrees (very roughly South East).

Whereas Thaicom 5 (Truevisions) sits at about 240 Degrees ( Very roughly South West).

So with an Eastern looking balcony you should be OK as it's only just over 20 degrees more to the South compared to straight East.

Thanks for that, looks like CTH for me then. I could never get a dish to face 240 degrees.

  9. are the satellites near enough to use just one dish?, True Thaicom 5,

CTH Ku band is Viasat ?

    regards Worgeordie

    Unfortunately not.

They are way apart, about 110 degrees if I'm not mistaken.

I am thinking of getting the CTH dish, what direction does it face? The balcony on my condo faces north and east so siting a Truevisions dish was always a problem.

  10. Mine need cleaning too. I was going to take them to the Laundry Express shop on 3rd road which advertises dry cleaning. If you turn right at the junction of Thappraya and 3rd road the shop is about 500 yards on the left.

  11. I and my fellow COC members have been committee members for just over a year. We have just registered the Juristic Person (JP, who happens to be Tha), manager (Thai) and Co-owners Committee (COC) members (all farangs) with the Lands Department (LD) and there have been no problems as far as work permits are concerned.

I believe that everybody in Thailand involved with a condo realises that it is mainly the farangs who run the COCs and that it is necessary without a work permit. The two JPs before our current JP and manager were farangs without problem or comment from the LD. I also checked with my lawyer and he said that there is no problem and that there have been no problems with farangs not having work permits.

You really need to get hold of the Condo Act, 2008 (attached) and read it through. It is very useful in laying out the duties and responsibilities. It also does not say that the farang COC members have to have work permits.

It also does not say that farangs do not have to have work permits. That's the problem there seems to be NO clear ruling either way. Our management company (which is a big thai firm) have tried to get someone in authority to issue a written confirmation but no one is prepared to say farangs can operate on committees and as JPs without a work permit.

  12. To answer posts 5 and 7. We do have office staff, who are thais, and a management company, which is thai. BUT the condo Juristic Person/Chairman is a farang, so it is obviously possible. He has been registered as such with the local Land Office for several years, and signs all the relevant paperwork pertaining to that post. If it was illegal you would think the Land Office would not agree to a farang in the position, but they do !!

Some of the posts confirm my fears that although it MIGHT be overlooked, anyone wanting to push the matter could probably say i was acting illegally. So i guess the answer, for me, is sorry but no thanks.

  13. I have been asked to be on the Committee of my condo, the post also acts as Juristic Person for the condo. I am on a non O visa with no work permit. I am quite happy to do it but am worried about several stories i have seen where farangs were arrested for "working" on condo committees. The post carries no salary of course but does require work, attending committees, signing cheques etc.

I have tried to check the legal position but their seems to be no clear rule that allows farangs to do this. If they do is there a risk of arrest?
