  1. Have you tried sending an email to the Manila office, which is the one that serves U.S. residents living in Asia? We have found they normally respond to emails with 1 business day, although we haven't tried to contact them lately. Perhaps you could call them if it's urgent. Here is the contact info:

    http://www.ssa.gov/foreign/foreign.htm

That link does bot work either.

Try using a VPN. The site may be blocked from where you are trying to view it.

Received this from Manila. How do u set up a VPN??

t looks like your internet provider has been put in the blocked list by SSA.

Your e-mail came with an alert from our server that it is a potential phishing message.

Have you tried to access the site using another internet provider?

    Sincerely,

  3. Army chief willing to meet Yingluck after election day

    By The Nation

Army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha on Wednesday said he was willing to meet with Pheu Thai candidate Yingluck Shinawatra at an appropriate time, preferably after the July 3 vote.

"I thank Khun Yingluck for trying to meet and seek my advice but our meeting should take place at the right time," he said.

Prayuth said he was ready to talk to all sides as he was concerned about the political situation after election day, hinting at the tight race to form the next government.

The army chief was responding to reports that Yingluck, the no 1 party list candidate, is seeking to meet him to talk about the current political situation. If Pheu Thai wins a majority in the general election on July 3, she will be Thailand's first female prime minister.

Army spokesman Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd earlier said it was the wrong time for Yingluck to seek a meeting with Prayuth.

Thailand is in the middle of an election campaign and Gen Prayuth is a government officer so he will certainly be criticised of not being neutral if he were seen meeting with Yingluck, Sansern said.

IIt is obvious from the tone of this article that Thailand's Army and the General's who control it consider themselves outside the 'Democratic Process" in Thailand. A fiefdom unto themselves. It is quite different in Mature Democracies where the Military is under the control of the elected leadership. Obama, David Cameron or Sarkozy do not have Kowtow to the military. The military role should be to protect the Democratic principals and live by them.

It will be a long while before Thailand is truly Democratic Nation if the Generals are not subdued.

  4. You can rent a 70 sq meter western style condo in Patong Tower for 36,000 baht a month long term and wake up to Beautiful views everyday or rent a similar condo with pools for 20-25,000 baht long term close to the beaches in Phuket. There are plenty of houses in Chalong area suitable for farangs with western kitchen ect some with access to a pool for 15,000 baht- Kata beach is just down the road. I shop at Carrefour in Patong all fruits and vegetables are cheaper than Bangkok. Hamburger and steaks are cheaper. Bangkok is a business town, incredible traffic and pollution. The nearest beach is Pattaya (YUCK). In Phuket Town you live about 20-25 minutes from Beautiful beaches and you do not have 10,000,000 people around you. If you get sick or injured go to Phuket international Hospital-reasonable prices for good care. Try riding a motorbike in Bangkok- insane. You can ride a motorbike from Phuket Town to the beach easy. Every time I go to Bangkok I cannot wait to get out of there. Be happy you live in Phuket.

PLEEEEASE MATE...dont make more advertising for PHUKET here...we have by far enough Farangs from BKK coming here to Chalong and Rawai.... PHUKET IS MORE EXPENSIVE AS BANGKOK....TRUST ME PLEEEEEASE   :whistling:

...and about the view in the morning....one can change girls much easier in Pattaya....you pay may be more for an apartment there but less for the girls I guess (((:

YES !!!!!!!! I AM SORRY>---- BANGKOK IS CHEAPER BY FAR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! --OOPS. DO NOT COME TO PHUKET.

  5. Regardless of its ranking within ASEAN, Bangkok is still cheap when compared to carving out an existence in any major Western city.

My modest 120 sqm apartment here in relatively well situated Asoke would easily cost £3000 (150,000 THB)a month back in Notting Hill. A black cab from Victoria Station to Portobello Road at 4am with minimal traffic cost me £14 (700 THB)last time I went back in 2009. A pack of Marlboro Lights set me back £6 (300 THB), a standard bottle of Heineken £5 (300 THB), a litre of 95RON unleaded £1.20 and a zone 2 to zone 1 jaunt on the tube weighed in at £4 (200 THB).

Frankly, the only expats with real grounds for complaint are retirees suffering the effects of weakening western currencies. If you're working here, you're living large compared to the majority of Thais.

Who would want to retire in GOD awful Bangkok!!!!!!!.. 10,000,000 people-insane traffic, expensive, pollution. Just like I would not want to retire in London. Working in these cities is another story

  6. Try living in Phuket... vastly more expensive than Bangkok. It's very hard to find even a small house for to rent for less than 15,000THB a month and frankly you have to search for those. I paid on average 23,000THB for a 2-bed house in central Phuket, near to the school where I worked, not near the beach. Not only were the supermarkets more expensive than Bangkok, the international hospitals where charging more than Bumengrad. Welcome to the Geneva of Asean!

Obviously you have not lived in Bangkok. I live in both places Bangkok and Phuket. Yes you would expect Phuket lifestyle to be more expensive, but it is not. Rents are higher in Bangkok by far. A studio apartment with a western kitchen suitable for a non-Thai is about 30-35,000 baht a month anywhere near the subway or the Skytrain. If you want to rent a western style house it will be outside suitable public transportation and will cost more than 23,000 baht and you will need to buy a car.The food is more expensive in Bangkok. Go to Market Villa at Ari station -prices are outrages or Top Foods. I am not sure where you were shopping in Bangkok -maybe the outdoor markets.

  7. Most "quality" tourists are above average as far as intelligence. I'm sure they research their destinations and have a good idea what they will find. They will know that certain areas of Pattaya are designed to attract sex tourists. The bottom line is if you don't like the sex tourists areas, don't go.

How do you determine who is a quality tourist? Is it the amount of money they spend? In my opinion, sex tourists spend more money than the so called quality tourists. Are you so naive to think that bar girls and even many bars report the amount of money that they make from sex tourists?

A difficult thing to understand is why there are so many better than thou board members who hate Pattaya. Bulldoze Pattaya? Drop an atom bomb on it? The only logical reason I can think of for this hate (?) is that the members wives read their posts so they have to condemn Pattaya to make their wives happy. The wives obviously forbid the husbands to visit fun city.

no mate not everyone is sick f... like you the very type thailand wants to get rid off

I would rather see you the judgmental priest yelling 'sick fuc_k" on your way out.

  8. If I assume the PM is more western than Thai, since he was born and educated in the west, it follows that his outlook and thought process are more western. Now, since he is not your average Thai, he is expressing a more focussed aspiration for his country. I can bet there is NOT ONE leader in the West who would be happy with a certain type of tourists that seem to flock to Thailand in droves. Similarly, the PM is aware of a longer term image problem if the entrenched view is that Thailand is a low cost sex tourist destination. So what is wrong with trying to clean up the industry? The success or failure of his stated aspiration is unknown, but as I said can't blame him for stating an aspiration.

Also, the PM is able to recognise white trash when he sees/smells/hears it...unlike the average Thai who may think all farangs are rich and well-educated. So which leader wouldn't want to minimise white trash from arriving and worse still, setlling here and breeding?

I believe this discussion is about all tourists. Abhisit did not mention or label the genre of sex tourist as the problem. If you have enough money i am sure sex is available in Cannes France on any given day. Your obsession with white trash makes you sound like a minister at the pulpit, shouting the "damnation and fires of hell await you"!!!!!!!!! Mellow out it is better for your heart.

  9. Abhisit's as well as his advisors wealth and elitism is showing through. The impetus behind Thai Tourism and it's infrastructure has always been a "great vacation" at a great price, whether you are a sex tourist or a family from USA or Europe. Of the 15 million plus tourist that visited Thailand last year , how many were wealthy?? For the wealthy there are many choices, they can go anywhere. To try to lure the wealthy and forget the more common tourist is mistake. It seems if they had there way they would make the vacation spots a gated community where the only Thai's they would see would be the housekeeper and staff with their own private beach. I am sure the vast majority of innkeepers, hotels, resorts ect listened to Mr Abhisit with dismay.

His speech did nothing to support the tourist industry as a whole. He is not seeing reality. A foolish comment on Thai tourism.

  10. I will be coming back to Thailand for 5 months. I am a avid Tennis Fan (Nadal vs Federer) French Open, Wimbledon, ect. Usually I have UBC -this time it looks like cable in the Phuket area. Anyone have any info on watching tennis on Cable TV in Patong. Posting this here because i did not get much of response on the Phuket Forum

  11. To put it bluntly you neither accept or reject anything. The path to understanding "self" is Zazen (meditation). Fundamentally it is not following rules or precepts. Simply put, proper meditation under a proper guide leads one to a place where rules and precept are not needed and you are naturally comfortable within yourself and you 'do the right thing"

Is this a easy path? Far from it . It is possibly the hardest thing one can do in their life.

The support of a sangha, following precepts or to take refuge can help, but one can fall into a trap there also.

"To study the Universe is to study oneself. To study oneself is to forget oneself. To forget oneself is to be enlightened by the 10000 things." Zen Master Dogen

Read some books sure and familiarize yourself with Buddhism, but ultimately it come down to meditation, yourself, and your teacher.

  12. I came across this thesis browsing the Internet. Having lived in Thailand for 7 years and observing Thai Buddhism during that time I have to agree with the author. Coming from the Zen buddhist tradition of personal responsibility and independence, I find many of the authors remarks to be believable and to the point. This does not mean Zen has avoided similar pitfalls, but it does seem that Buddhism in Thailand has been heavily compromised. http://www.polis.leeds.ac.uk/assets/files/thaipol/mccargo-buddhism-2004.pdf

  13. 20k Euros at home in the safe? Is the Majestic Residence a higher end complex? I would be extremely nervous about keeping that amount of cash in the home in any country.

    TheWalkingMan

That's not a lot of cash and jewelry. Once decent diamond ring could soon make it up.

The Majestic Residence is in The Cosy Beach area, and not high end. It does have full security with guards and booms.

It is a lot of Cash to have in one's house. Why would you keep 30,000 euros in your house in Thailand-How did he get 30,000 Euros in to Thailand. It is illegal to bring that amount of cash into Thailand. What is wrong with a bank. Something not quite right here. Obviously they had inside information
