The way you do this is how everyone else does who is in your situation. The Thais do the same thing.

You go to nearly any gold shop. They charge you an interest rate of between 1.25 - 1.5% per month. You place your gold as collateral. They give you cash, usually 80% of the price of the gold as long as they are fungible bars from a recognized gold shop, such a Hua Seng Heng. So you need to put up 1 million to get your 800k.

You then place this money in a bank account for your visa. You need to go back monthly and pay interest to the gold shop or they sell your gold, and if the price of gold drops you need to make up the difference or they sell your gold. After you get your extension of stay, you withdraw the money out of the bank, return it to the gold shop, and get your gold back.

Since they charge you 1 month of interest for even 1 day of a month, you generally wind up paying 4 months for the entire visa process, or about 6%. So to do this with 800k would cost you 48,000 baht.

If you thought someone would do this for free, you are mistaken.  There is a cost to do it this way.

Thank you for that. I did not know they do that. That is not for me. I would trust a bank but not gold shop.

Where did I say I expected for free? Nothing is free in this life.

Can you use gold in the manner you are suggesting  in Australia --- Do Australian banks accept deposits of gold into bank accounts?

I doubt you will find what you seek in Thailand or in the West, however, I do wish you well and hope you will tell us when you find this unique bank.

I would not have a clue. If you read the first line in my original post you could see that. I am just asking. If you don't ask you never know.

Although not a bank the company I have my silver with is basically what I am after. They sell, buy and store bullion. Each month I receive a statement from them which details how much silver I have and the value of that silver at the time of production of the statement. At any time I can email them and buy more or sell any or all of my holdings.

Yes I am sure it would be a unique bank if I did find one, but like I said, if you don't ask you never find out.

Also Uber normally has what they call "surge pricing" meaning the price may change depending on demand. I'm not sure if Uber in LOS does that too.

Yep, they have. Often check on prices to my favourite destinations and prices change often. As mentioned in my original post most "quotes" i got on the Uber app from my house to the airport was just over 200B. The highest around dinner times was nearly 350B.

You may find a bank who will rent you a safe deposit box to store the gold.

Forget about using a "gold deposit" in lieu of 800,000 Bht cash deposit!

I am not after a safety deposit box. I just though for some small miracle a bank may accept gold and used much like a Foreign Currency Account where I could deposit Australian dollars or any other currency and as long as equivalent to the 800,000 would be accepted by immigration (or so I was told by my visa agent).

Cash is liquid asset and Thai gold is almost as liquid. The ladies of the night, or any other time for that matter, trade in it all the time.

There are so many "legal" transportation options to get to the airport.  Why do you want to endanger yourself and another person, i.e. the Uber driver who usually is someone who has been "doing Uber" for less than three months and has a nice regular job or is a student?  Uber isn't legal in Thailand.  As I've learned in other arenas, it just isn't worth it to try to fix problems in Thailand.  Call the airport taxi and have them pick you up.

I am not endangering anyone else. If they chose to do that and  take me they are endangering themselves.

I did intend to take other method of transport to the airport for the mentioned reason but was just curious as to why so expensive.

I saw headline on a Thaivisa news post the other day stating that the DLT says Uber and Grab are legal but must meet certain conditions. As far as illegal goes, prostitution, drugs, riding without helmet, driving without licence are all illegal but happen everyday everywhere in Thailand. Uber is not liked because Farang owned not Thai.

  6. This maybe a far fetched idea for any world bank let alone Thailand but I will ask the question.

I am on a retirement extension and as one of the requirements is 800,000 Baht in the bank 3 months before renewal. As part of my portfolio I have some silver in Australia and some gold here in Thailand. I have 50 baht gold worth about 1 million baht at todays value.

So here is my question (probably stupid) but does anyone know of a bank where i can deposit physical gold and withdraw the physical gold if required. I could use this as my account for visa extension?

  7. I live near Big C Hang Dong in Chiang Mai and used Uber for the first time recently. I have used it 4 times to go into City and back  and much easier and cheaper than Tuk Tuk. From Loi Kroh to Nimmarnhemin Road used to cost me 250B after midnight. Uber cost me 130B to here and nearly twice the distance.

I am flying on Sunday and not too far from airport. I added the destination to see how much it would cost by Uber. Every time I checked it was over 200B and one was nearly 350B.

Just curious as to why so different to Airport. Do they have to pay fee for entering airport area? Maybe danger money, lol.

Do I take it you're an inbred apple islander, or simply an expert on Tassie?

Oh, here we go. Another expert on what people do and think.

I am not an expert on anything and I am not from Tasmania and I got the information of the calculated population of Tasmania website.

You made the comment "Nobody in their right mind wants to live there anyway." I just put roughly 517,000 most likely do. Some would not want I agree. Just because you may not like somewhere doesn't mean others don't want to.

I lived and worked in the PH for a year without incident. Got to keep your wits about you though.

The worst thing is the begging and congestion in Manila.

Roads are no more dangerous than Thailand, but certainly as bad including the drivers.

Their local cuisine is far less interesting than Thai.

Transportation infrastructure is inferior to Thailand.

The decent law abiding citizens are very friendly and helpful.

Finally as a western expat you are held in high esteem and respected, the complete opposite to Thailand.

I have visited Manila a couple of time but to very poor areas of Pateros and Tagig and agree with everything you say especially the last line. Found them much more friendly.

  10. I have a Honda Jazz and the have been insured with a particular company for 3 years and this renewal will be 4th year.

The premiums have been around the 12,000 baht. Obviously the insured value goes down each year but premium roughly the same. Received my renewal last week and insured value dropped by 50,000 but premium went up to over 16,000 baht. Thought oh well thats insurance companies for you.

But then I was looking closely at premium renewal details comparing to last years. Last year my No Claim Bonus was 40%. This year It was down to 30%. I had had a small accident which the police told me to call my insurance company but I did not make a claim. This was detailed on the renewal notice. So I emailed my broker who had issued the renewal notice and asked why NCD had dropped when I had not made a claim. Next day received a new renewal notice. NCD gone to 50% and premium down to just over 12,000.

    Pays to check.

  11. I came to CM a fews weeks before moving here to find a house to rent. Went to Honda dealer to ask about what I needed for buying a car. Was asked for passport and was told I could buy  a car. Walked out of dealers having ordered a car to be ready the day after we were due to arrive in CM.

3 weeks later arrived in CM went to dealer and paid for and picked up car and drove off. No plates at all and was told red plates in about 2 weeks. They told me if I was fined for no plates prior to them arriving to bring receipt to dealer and they would reimburse fine. Plates arrived and they installed. Got log book but was told nothing about it. Was told normal plates due in about 6 weeks. Went back in 6 weeks. No plates. kept going back for 6 months. Still no plates. At the 6 month visit I enquired more and insisted to find out why no plates. I was asked who sold me car and I told them who. Oh she has left now. So they checked up as to the progress. Car had not even been registered, she had not done the paperwork. So they got me to sign then and had new plates soon after. Good thing is they did not back date rego so drove around for free rego for 6 months, albeit illegally.
