Spending Money - Should I follow my Friends Advice ?
Sheryl replied to AlienBoy's topic in General Topics
Hoping is not a plan. Even if she manages to fend off all relative requests it would come at the cost of estrangement from her family....a family she will need when this lump sum runs out. Which, if left as a lump sum in a bank account, it will do no matter how frugal she is and at a point where she is too old to have many options. As discussed above there are concrete measures you could take to protect her on both counts. -

If the savings are all in the one account also used fir immigration purposes then it is a single account and there will be delays and hurdles in your wife accessing it. Keep 800 (or better yet 400 after changing to marriage extension) in the solo account and use the rest to purchase a deferred lifetime annuity for your wife that comes into effect after your death. (or similar instrument...you need to consult a financial planner). Not only would this protect her from greedy relatives but it would also ensure she does not outlive her money which is a very real risk. You have not given her age but as she had a child 25 years ago I assume she is in her late 40's to late 50's now. 3 million is very little money for what could be a 40 year widowhood... unless you invest it in an interest bearing instrument of some sort. She could otherwise be headed for an impoverished old age and being a significant financial burden to her daughter. Going forward live on your 35k monthly income and start to make the needed repairs on your house. That burden will otherwise fall to your wife and the worse you let it get the more it will cost to repair it. -
Not exact copies but chemically related. Same class of drug, same action. Enslaptil is newer (comparatively -- there are even newer drugs in this class) and longer acting with fewer side effects hence captopril is virtually never used any more. Nothing mild about enalapril efficacy. That said, people vary in their response. How you responded to a drug in slmany years ago is not necessarily an indicat8on of how you would respond now. As one ages the blood vessels become stiffer and hypertension harder to control. Not unusual to need more than one medication. The Loranta not working could be dose related; typ8cally they start one on a lower dose then raise it as needed. You really should return to the doctor who prescribed it and discuss the side effects etc with him rather than trying to self prescribe an obsolete medication based on experience nany years back.

The OP might not have been in an English-owned establishment.

As aboce -- enalapril (available everywhere) is widrly used drug in same class/same mode of action as captopril.

Keep in mind waitress is not the cook. Relaying a complaint to the cook could be highly problematic for her if cook is older than she is or more senior in the establishment. And quite possible neither cook nor waitress has any idea how to prepare eggs western style. Unless at a place that clearly specializes in western food, best to avoid ordering same in Thailand. In terms of eggs. Thais understand omelet. Boiled, poached, scrambled, Western-style fried eggs are not normal Thai fare.

Just glanced because not skilled in interpreting rhythms. Disregard that whole consultation. It does sound from your symptoms thst something significant is occasionally going on but no telling at this point exactly what. And without knowing that cannot proceed to treatment options. If for example what you are having is runs of v-tach treatment would be first medications then if not effective implantable defibrillator.

Are you sure you had such ties? Did AA World ever get in touch with you? -

Yes. I also had to send it to AA when I used them. It is a standard request. Generally they just want the face page. -
Blue crime vs red crime update
Sheryl replied to Skipalongcassidy's topic in US & Canada Topics and Events
Cities always have higher crime rates than rural areas. And cities are more likely to be "blye". if examining at level of county and not first disaggregating by urban/rural the analysis is very flawed. -
Should have called the Head SS office (and still should if the 6 month window hasn't closed). Many have continued under Section 39 without a pink ID card Just passport. Problem is that some SSO offices do not know how to process this for foreigners .... or in general (very rare for a Thai to take this option since they can be vovered under "30 baht: scheme for free).

Spending Money - Should I follow my Friends Advice ?

"I’m now torn between staying on our current path and not spending any unnecessary money , or throw caution to the wind and stop worrying about what the future may hold for my darling wife and daughter after I have passed away " There is a middle path here. Budget for yourself & your wife a certain amount of money for "extras" every couple of months and continue to keep the rest in savings. You hardly need to to completely waste your savings just to have an occasional luxury. There is another problem not mentioned in your OP: How confident are you that your wife and daughter will be able to wisely manage the 3 million (or whatever it is at your death)? After all it will need to last them at least your wife's remaining lifetime. Thais are not usually the best at m naging lump sums like this and even if they themselves are, it is highly likely that other relations, and relations of relations, will come calling with demands and pressure tactics...and keep it up. That 3 million could vanish rather quickly in such a scenario and you will not be there to help your wife field such demands. I would suggest you investigate annuity type arrangements with a reliable financial institution. Tokio Marine might be an option. You should also discuss clearly with your wife how much is to be spent on your funeral (look into whether there is a village fund that will assist). Are you sure there is no survivor entitlement or any sort to your State pension? -
I meant do not try to go to an inexpensive clinic to get the Holter done. I wouldn't try it at BPH either, might waste your money. Have it done at a proper arrhythmia center. If it is really a problem for you to stay in Bangkok for the duration and they recommend a longer period of monitoring, returning to Pattaya first and then coming back to Bangkok when the monitoring period is up could be an option. No problem to travel with the device on, in fact it is advantageous for it to record under a variety of types of activity. Sometimes simply doing an exercise stress test is enough to provoke whatever arrythmia the patient is having and this alone may give enough information in some cases.. That can be done on the spot. Again, need to consult expert in this area and be guided by his advise.

I’m having bouts of Anxiety – Need advice .
Sheryl replied to Captain Disorderly's topic in Health and Medicine
I also get the 4 (or 5 ) AM wakening with worries, I think it is natural. Not only is our sleep less deep at that point (if we are older) but all problems seem more worrisome at that hour and solutions less possible than they do by light of day. For me what works is to: 1. Make a clear decision to deal with these issues the following day. If it helps, right them down - the issue nto the whole inner dialogue. Just so you have a sense it will not be overlooked/forgotten. 2. Sit up and read for a while so as to get my mind to "change channels",. Some people find it better to actually change location, for me just sitting up in bed is enough. I keep some light or calming reading matter near the bed for this purpose. 3. At the same time I take a dose of quick acting melatonin (sub lingual) Usually within half an hour I have broken the "worry obsession" enough to go back to sleep. -
P.S. Re cost as you have insurance there will be back and forth between hospital and insurer and costs may come down as a result. You can get ablation (if indicated) done for less at Siriraj Hospital but, even in their private wing, I don't think they are very skilled at dealing with international insurers and might even not have direct payment mechanism.

The extension process is the same every year. But individual Imm offices often vary their requirements a bit year by year. Marriage extension always involved more steps than retirement extension. In no small part because it has to be sent higher up the chain for approval whereas retirement extensions can be approved on the spot at level of Imm office. The greater paperwork and longer approval time is the trade off for lower financial requirement. Up to you whether worth it or not.

I think rather it is PTSD being triggered. Rapid Eye Movement Desensitization works very well for that.
