I would be curious to find out how this affected the mean score of this years students compared to previous years.
Wouldn't it be embaressing if significant number failed.

Thugs. There is only one truth and it's our truth. Don't you dare disagree.

So we have a fact finding comittee set up by the government to make an objective investigation of a partly government owned company? And just to be sure that everything is objective, the company itself sets up two comittees itself. Seems legit.

There are plenty of cheap 'almost on the street' but not blocking the footpath places that serve quality food (with decent looking and tasting) meat for 35 baht in Bangkok.
It's that type of place that you will find me if I want cheap eats.

If I were to use the word ‘farce’ in this thread; would I be referring to:
- The police handling of this case
- The police handling of important cases in general
- A certain loud mouthed politician’s clairvoyance
- All of the above

Yet to accept? Snubbed perhaps? Oh dear.

This would have been nice to know LAST WEEK as I just got back from Koh Samed and spent plenty of time swimming in Ao Tuptim.... which I was told was unaffected due to being on the opposite side of the island to the oil spill. Lies, lies, and more lies.
As a regular Samed visitor for the last 10 years, I can only say I never say so much rubbish floating in the sea (coke cups, plastic bags, rope, plastic bags, fishing reels, plastic bags) as I did during this last trip. I can honestly say some random piece of semi-submerged piece of plasctic wrapped itself around my legs on almost every swim I took, regardless of the beach.

Ahhh, the USA. Biggest proponent of free trade in the world. Shame they don't practice what they preach.

I'm not pointinig fingers at one side or another. However, I am just as likely to believe that the army fired on innocent civillians (after all the restraint they showed for all those weeks) as I am to believe the DSI is a truly independent body who actually know what they are doing.

While this is commendable, wouldn't it be better to change the culture of chucking rubbish into the sea and onto the beach (and everywhere else for that matter) in the first place?
Much of the rubbish on Thai beaches is tossed overboard from the likes of fishing boats.

It shows how oblivious she is to her role. Having the PM down there a) shows the government actually cares, and
would be a huge morale booster for the local people who have been affected.
It isn't uncommon for people in power to believe they are above the masses, but at least the majority of them have enough common sense to pretend they aren't every once and a while.

Poor girl, very decent of her not to sue. I am not saying the Police actions were any less than professional in this particular case... but, well.... you know their track record.

Just been swimming at tub Tim beach, you wouldn't know there was a problem over the other side of the island, everything this side is fine. Plan to stay another 10 days so will keep you updated

thanks for the update! please keep them coming!!
Yes, please update if the situation changes. I will be heading that way next week. Cheers.

Elsewhere the latest satalite picture shows the main slick (bigger than the island) has bypassed the island and is heading for the mainland.
The oil in the bay is shown as a tiny portion of the main body of the slick.
Look out the mainland.
Do you have a link please?

I'm on samet at the moment, no sign of any oil from white sands down to tub Tim but that could well change in the next few days. On the plus side, not seen samet so quiet for years, very few tourists here

Thanks for the news. Any update? A few of us here have trips planned in the next 2 weeks. Need to know whether to cancel or not.

I wonder how many distasters like this it will take to truly bring about change?

The President of PTT was just interviewed on CNN ....he said the cleanup would be finished by TOMORROW!!!
If that is what was said, then I think we can confidently call him a liar without risk of being sued.

So once again we have a real crisis, and once again we are hearing nothing of any real substance from the people in power. Of course this is because as usual no one with any real power knows what's going on. This could be a) because PTT doesn't really know, or
the Thai cultural practice of not wanting to pass on bad news, especially to ones superiors.

'Ignorance of duties'. How does one get to be come a Police Chief General if one is ignorant of one's duties? No, wait, don't answer that. Don't answer that.

Actually the photos of the clean-up operation look quite impressive. Clearly it's being taken seriously and a lot of effort is going into the clean up operation.
I agree. Although I think a lot of this is because it's washed up on Koh Samed, a famous tourist destination, and has thus made internation headlines (reported on BBC etc).
I'm no expert, but clearly PPT was playing down the size and seriousness of this until it became clear that they hadn't contained it. I would expect no less from oil company scum the world over however.

I suppose it wouldn't matter so much if it at least appeared that she cared about matters at home.
