  1. When I renewed my Non-O and Retirement Extension yesterday at Chang Wattana, I was required by the Immigration officer to read and sign that same form spelling out the new conditions and penalties for overstaying.

Large signs listing the new overstay rules and penalties are prominently displayed at the entrance to the Immigration offices and next to the information desk.

I think they are serious about it.

  2. Last week, I tried to order a device to be shipped to Thailand from an online retailer based in China and PayPal would not approve my payment for shipment to Thailand. (My PayPal account is US based)

Through a link provided by the retailer, I was able to open a Thai based PayPal account and pay with my Bangkok Bank Debit card Item received today.

  3. As said lack of earth. Washing Machines often come with Schuko plugs. These require a Schuko socket for the earth to be connected correctly. The earth is the metal side contacts on the plug. As an alternative a third pin can be added to the plug to fit a standard 3 pin outlet.

    Pic of Schuko plug/socket

    Thanks for posting this.

My washing machine is on my balcony. Sometimes the floor is wet and I have become way too complacent about it. I have that type of power plug and now that I know how it works, will get the proper outlet installed.

  4. Almost the entire campus of Sukhumvit Hospital is comprised of brand new buildings and facilities. There always seem to be English speaking staff available and walk-in treatment is available.

As it is close to where I live, I have made use of it a number of times and have been generally satisfied as have friends who have used it. One friend has had extensive work done in their dental clinic. I would say their pricing is in the moderate range. They are part of the Samitivej Group.

I have no knowledge of their maternity operation.

The location is very convenient; just a few steps from the Ekkamai BTS station, Exit #3.

  5. "Searching the model number of your modem/router should reveal what reset options it has."

TRUE, in it's paternalistic wisdom, covers the model number and all manufacturing information with an unremovable sticker so a reset would only be a last resort. I'm actually tempted to buy my own router anyway.

The problem has not happened in the last 2 days so maybe indeed a TRUE problem and not my system.

    Thanks to all who replied.

  6. Pattaya is known for having frequent water shortages. Many hotels would hire private companies to fill their water tanks when the public water supply was insufficient.

One day while riding a motorbike around local backcountry, I observed a well marked water supply tank truck drop it's intake hose into a scummy little pond and fill up.

Never trusted Pattaya hotel tap water again, even for tooth brushing.

  7. There was a long and informative thread on this forum maybe one or two years ago detailing one couples experience when something went wrong with a birth being covered by a major hospital package plan. As Sheryl mentioned, monumental supplementary charges for post natal care. I tried to find a link but could not find a successful search term. Maybe somebody else can post the link.

  8. I had a similar episode 5 or 6 years ago. I was getting unusual lower back pains that did not seem at all connected with muscular or skelital pain...usually when I was sitting. It wasn't a constant occurrence and they eventually subsided, then kind of went away.

One day, I went to take a pee and what came out looked like I was draining the crankcase of an old car...black, brown, a bit of red, but no pain or noticeable discomfort. I was horrified and quickly called a friend who is a retired physician. He encouraged me to wait a bit before going into a full blown panic, told me to see how it looked the next few times I pee'd. Surprisingly, the next time was much clearer...really only a few hints of what had come before and the next day, pretty much clear and has remained that way since.

My friend believed I had passed a very small stone or perhaps had a blood vessel rupture somewhere along the line. I made no connection between the lower back pains and the urine episode until months later when it occurred to me that I had not had those pains in a long while.

Again, I consulted with my MD friend and he could not be sure they were connected or not but guessed that I might have had a minor infection or possible some kind of cyst that opened.

Don't panic but do get checked out.

  9. This last week I've been experiencing constant disconnects between router and ADSL. If I turn the router off and back on, the connection re-establishes for a while.

When I just tried a Google querie, I received the following message"

    "WE'RE SORRY,

but your computer or network may be sending automated queries. To protect our users, we can not process your request right now."

Does this indicate I've been infected with malware? Is it possibly just co-incidental or probably connected to the router problem."

SYSTEM: True Online ADSL Bangkok. True supplied Zyxel router, Happening on both Chrome and Firefox. HP Pavilion laptop.

  10. There have been several quite smooth Filipino con artists who have worked the Phrom Phung area for years. They speak excellent English and often start things off with innocuous questions similar to what the OP was asked. In my case, asked where a good currency exchange service was and morphed into a discussion probing into details of my life. He was slick, tried to get me to accept an invitation to his house. I declined and left.

I really do not know what his specific scam was...maybe a card game or an invitation to buy gems or gold at a rate "only available on one day each year"

I would see him prowling the area around the BTS and Benjisri Park for several years thereafter, but not lately.

I learned early on not to wear sports jerseys identifying my home city. Both Filipino and Korean scammers would approach me: "Oh my God...You from Boston!! My niece will be going to school there next month..she is very scared...can you please come and talk to her....blah, blah blah"

  11. Dragonfly.. I got mine in the UK. But they were on lazada.com not sure if still on there!

I bought my GF's MotoGthrough a 3rd party Lazada seller out of Hong Kong. That is taking a bit of a chance as warranty might be invalid. My first generation MotoG 1033 was marked UK/FR. Delivery to my door was in less than 7 days.

There are also some HongKong based Ebay sellers of the MotoG with fairly reasonable prices...some even cover shipping...again, make sure you understand warranty issues.

    The 8gb model is 1032, 16gb is 1033.

  12. For language settings, just tap the Gear shaped icon on the homescreen. When the settings menu comes on, just scroll down to "Language & Imput" and tap that.

Tap the top item on the list, that is the language the phone is currently set on.

A long menu of dozens of languages will appear, Thai is way down close to the bottom..if you cant recognize the word THAI in Thai script, have your wife or daughter handy. Tap it and the phone will be in Thai.

    Honestly; not difficult.

  13. I like Lazada and order from them often but take note that if any device you buy from them is marked "Imported" and sold by a 3rd party seller, your only warranty is the 15 day return option. Manufacturers warranties are often not valid.

So far I've been lucky and it hasn't been an issue but complex devices can be expensive to repair.

  14. and then we will have a foldable tablet / phone

it will fold down to the size of a Note 5 and then if you open it , it unfolds to the size of a 10 inch tablet,

yeah you laugh now smile.png just wait tongue.png

Interesting point and you're probably right. There is already a huge amount of money going into developing flexible displays and if they could make one that can fold over, the possibilities will be amazing.

usability - there's an obvious reason why 4.5" phones are still popular and that's the ability to operate them one handed. For instance I'm typing this on a 5" phone with one thumb, but I'm close to the upper limit here. I'd think this is a major reason why a certain size becomes too much for many people.

There are a number of apps now available, some pre-installed on larger phones that adjust the keypad location so it can still be used with one hand/thumb, compressing it and moving it to one side of the display or the other depending on your preference.
