Speaking Thai - is it necessary these days for an expat ?
daveAustin replied to The Cobra's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Probably not if you're in a touristy area or Bangkok, but it is nice to be able to speak rudimentary Thai at least to people while on a road trip, example. Or if you're in a jam or a delivery driver calls etc etc. Each to their own, but not as necessary as it might have been. You'll soon all be speaking it if immigration make you sing the anthem and favourite Thai song for your visa though. 😛 -
Might need a bit more information...

Shove it! #1 Aside from China's overtures at general expansion, who's likely to attack Thailand to warrant others coming to the rescue? #2 What are the odds of one off these others getting attacked and Thailand having to send it's troops? #3 It would seriously upset China. #4 It would especially upset Pootin. Those who's sons are currently serving or who are reserves should be nervous at any sort of move to that club.

Foreigner Questions Thai Dowry: Netizens Respond
daveAustin replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
It’s to show everyone that the man is worthy to take their daughter. However, an Isaan gal with grandkids is proper tainted and shouldn’t require anything. Unless she is a stunner in a class family with a good job, the guy is a sucker. The family should be paying the him since he will be looking after them all! -
Thailand and China join forces for lunar and space research
daveAustin replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
They would love that. It’s not about putting ‘humans’ up there or the betterment of mankind, it is ALL ABOUT CHINA. Easy to mock the Thais, I get that, however there are some very clever blokes and firms in both nations, but I wish Thailand wouldn’t get dragged along by them. There’s always an ulterior motive. -
Daughter sentenced to 12 years for stealing money from her mother
daveAustin replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Always the same. You can take a country, impoverish and/or slay thousands, just don’t steal esp from banks or the wrong people. No time for thieves either though, so good enough. -
Thai health pushes for alcohol-free Songkran celebrations
daveAustin replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
What a silly article. Who did they ask again? Why not just ban it altogether, you boring old stick in the mud so n sos? If you don’t want to drink, then don’t drink, but stop foisting your staid meaningless lives on everyone else. Let the police do their job if people then go on to drive after drinking. -
UK police catch British pedophile at London airport
daveAustin replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Good that they got him, but his life, at 80, is about done anyway. Shudder to think what he got up to here in Thailand.- 92 replies

Foreigner condemned for driving car on Kamala Beach in Phuket
daveAustin replied to webfact's topic in Phuket News
Yes, foreigners are causing issues in Phuket at the mo it seems, but the they were invited en-masse, visa free, so the powers there will need to suck it up as this is how some of them behave. Driving a car on the sand is hardly worthy of this kind of over the top blowback even if they are aggressive Russian or Chinese types. Just fine them and be done with it. -
PM Blasted For Saying Cannabis Policy Yielded Bad Results
daveAustin replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
He’s infuriating with that arrogant smug look on his boat, and nothing more than a mouthpiece for some other douche. Tempting to say he shouldn’t be taken seriously as he doesn’t know what he’s talking about, but is also quite dangerous for this country as he’s sticking his oar in and making ill informed decisions left and right. He does not understand his own people, but then again what gov has here in the past 50 years?- 106 replies

Passenger charges soar at six major Thai airports
daveAustin replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
It’s still a 30% increase no matter how you try to dress it up. One should keep an eye on stuff like this—air authorities and governments in particular are sly dogs for extra charges on this and that. As with many things here, prices don’t tend to go up in-kind with inflation. It is opportunism. -
Boy, 11, declines HIV test knowing partner’s positive status
daveAustin replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
On a planet where this potentially deadly disease needs to be caught early and stymied to prevent it spreading further. But yeah, people might focus on the lad and say, fair play young un, but what is an 18y old girl think she’s doing lying down with a pre-pubescent? She is sick in the head, esp knowing she’s already unclean with HIV. She needs locking up to protect society. -

Three Thai dishes rank in the world’s top ten best, says Tasteatlas
daveAustin replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Few of the burger & hot dog eating folk on here would have ever sampled some of the fine British fare available. Stereotypes reign supreme. You would be surprised. Those three dishes are indeed delicious and my favourites. It is a shame most places go overboard with the sauces and enhancers though, chiefly msg. -
He and his ilk are the biggest threat to Thailand, not some harmless plant. A total idiot and a bogus pm at that, put in place by cheating.

Thai Officials Announce "Innovative" Expat Health Measure
daveAustin replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
This kind of thing—it is xenophobia, pure and simple—is the absolute worst in Thais. It doesn’t matter what colour my skin is, if I’ve lived here for years on end, there is nothing I will have that a Thai person won’t already have. They’re always harping on about image, but it is this type of discriminatory behaviour that harms the image of Thailand. This guy should sew a swastika on his sleeve. Let’s hope tourists get the message and go to Vietnam instead where they value their visitors.- 395 replies

Overstay, ban and Laos
daveAustin replied to Mika78's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Dunno, but with ASEAN being a thing it wouldn't surprise me if immigration data on undesirables between these nations was not shared. Beer Laos is nice, but. 😉
