  1. What makes a good burger?

The owner HAS to be American. :bah:

Only an American would agree with that! :o

From my experience, the best burgers are:

Burger King. Consistently good every time, plus they have milkshakes :D

The Saloon. Good most of the time :D

Dukes. They need a new bun, but hamburger is always good. :D

Irish pub. Excellent buns, average hamburger :bah:

Mikes. I have never liked their hamburger. Too soft... :D

  2. If anyone has experience with somebody who can do a quality installation, please let me know their name and contact information. I have a couple of hundred square meters to put down.

    Many thanks.

Allow me to suggest my friend Prathom at 08-404-34560

  3. I bought a great GPS 'Nuvo' from Eagle GPS in Panthip Plaza. It won't record tracks like my other 2 year old gps, but it has a VERY good map of Thailand. It even has the all the sois in my muubaam and also rt. 121 (the newest outer ring road) Great big map (about 4.5 inches) and good graphics. I bought it about 3 months ago, and I love it!

Oh, the manager is Polish, and his name is Mr Maurycy. They have a website at http://eaglegps.co.th

    Thanks ajarn

HOw much you got yours for ?? how much you pay for your sim card per mth ??

28,500 for everything. no use of sim card, so no charge.

Ajarn..sounds a reasonable price....are the directions in English?

    Yes, all in English. :o

  5. Hi

Wonder if anyone can help......did anyone ever drive by car from bangkok to chiang mai? How long does it take at good speed from bangkok (non rush hour)? Petrol usage in 1.8 ?

What is the best route and anything special to stop and see on the way( but not huge detour)? Any advice appreciated.

    tks

hello mate i have done it a few times it took me about 7 hours i know people are gonna write and say they done it quicker, probably did. i was not in to much of a hurry, plenty of dead and dying dogs to look at , also stalls selling dried fish just to make your car stink all the way home , but you know what thais are like they got to buy them. no idea of the fuel costs.

i went bangkok to nakon sawan then take a left to kamphang phet, tak lamphang ,then chiang mai. i have no idea if this is the best route or not , sorry if not much help.

Fastest route is that route, which goes from Kampeng phet to Tak to Lampang. Lots of stuff to see, but I haven't had a trip like that in over 20 years

  7. I am glad that Sabaijai clarified that in this case he is only talking about burgers. He is a very clever guy as well as being a SUPER-moderator, so I didn't want to argue with him. However, when it comes to burgers, I am a fan of the Saloon's bacon burger myself.

I like both places, but the Dukes menu is waaay bigger and more sophisticated and that doesn't even include the 3 or 4 nightly specials that aren't on the menu. Also, it is much more comfortable place to eat. For one thing, you are not jammed in between a thousand sweaty back-packers with loud music blowing out your eardrums! :o

UG, I've always thought the menu at the saloon was huge- much bigger than the Dukes...

  8. I dont want to seem a "killjoy" but i have had several rental properties in CM and only one landlord (Jao kong baan) returned SOME of the bond money. They will do anything to try and get out of paying it back to you. So just leave it..I know it doesn't seem the "right thing" to do.. But i spent hours and a small fortune in getting the houses all back to better condition than when i moved in..Don't say you haven't been warned...

I have also been in a number of rental properties here over the last 20+ years and I have never had a problem getting any deposit money back from a landlord.

    But, shit can happen :o

  9. Hi,

I'm looking for an office chair mat - one of those thick plastic mats that protects the floor from your chair wheels. Something like this:

    officechairmatfd6.th.jpg

Anyone ever seen these in Chiangers?

I'm not sure where chiangers is, but in Chiang Mai, there are a few shops on chang moi rd. (runs from mikes hamburgers to wararot mkt)

  10. Small quakes are a good thing as it shows everything is moving along fine. It's when plates lock and store up energy that you need to worry.

BTW Ricardo that font is eye straining :o

Yeah, it sounds good, but it's definately not true. Fault lines are long, and an earthquake can happen at any point, and at any point in time.

Yes, and according to NASA, The US Geological Survey, Canadian Geological Survey, and the University of Washington, the stored energy of a locked plate on a slip-strike fault such as the Mae Yuam fault running through northern Thailand has more potential for a severe quake than a freely moving fault. Subduction quakes are a different thing but this isn't that type of fault line. A slip fault that is moving (hence small, frequent quakes) is not storing energy and its alot better to know it's moving.

More nonsense.. How is one to know if any fault is moving enough to make it safe? Or not safe?? There is only speculation on this issue. I grew up on the san andreas fault, and my town used to map earthquakes at about 130 per week from the various faults around Marin county, California. Enough to make it safe, you might say??

  11. Hello

I am looking for a self serve powerwasher to clean my bike really well once in a while. Are there any car washes or places where I can pay to use one for a few minutes?? Preferably near Nimmanhemin or west side of CM.

    Thanks for any help.

With the cost of labour here, I have never seen any place that is 'self-serve'... of course, you can buy a powerwasher... But, I'd suggest that if you ask one of the guys doing it, he'd let you spray your bike yourself, but you'll still pay the normal price

  12. Artemis,

I assume you are a farang. Women with farangs are targeted.

When you are blinded by talcum powder solution and 20 guys start groping your fiancee, there's little you can do. Can I ask you to consider where and in whose company might be a good idea to join in the water throwing. Taking a large group of your own friends might be better.

    Just an idea.

It isn't that bad in Chiang Mai - like Artemis says, there is no talcum powder here (luckily), and I havent seen any full on assaults like that. Thank you for reminding me of one of the reasons I left Bangkok.

I've seen tons of talcum used in chiang mai. I don't know why you haven't seen it, too...

  14. What a heart warming thread to find, after pouring through all the replies and respones from "The Nattering Nabobes of Negativism". Thai small village people are the true heart and soul of Thailand. Pitty so many tourists concentrate their visit in the large cities (BKK, CM etc) and dont really exprience "THE REAL THAILAND" by getting off the beaten track.

Maybe you need to 'get out' more... For I have found the real thailand exists in Bkk and Chiang Mai. Simply open your eyes. Friendly folks around everywhere, in my experience :o

  15. Uhg!

Ordered Pizza Co. delivery service today (something we almost never do, but today is Wan-Dek, and we were a bit lazy, so ...) and it was just awful.

How bad was it? I opened the little packets of ketchup that curiously come with the pizza and smothered a slice to see if it would help ... and it did! :o

As long as you stick to Chicken Trio with plain thick crust and use up all the oregano I think they're ok. None of the other pizzas they have are particularly good though.

I disagree with that. I think their pizzas are quite good. Never a problem for me.

  16. Songkran is fun, but, for me, not in town. Too much of everything; wild farangs and Thais, tons of traffic, drunkards...

Every year, I spend one day in town just to make sure I've made a good choice.. Then on the other days, I'm in out in the villages, where there are fewer people, and much fewer hassles. In the evenings, I'm back out in the villages to enjoy the soi parties and such.

I don't drink, and I can't really throw much water... From my experience, it is the villages which offer me the best show :o

  17. Yesterday I tried and failed to open an account at all three banks at Central (BKK, Krungthai and SCB) but solved the problem this morning by going to:

    Kasikorn Bank

    Thanon Moonmuang Chiangmai Branch

    205/3-6 Moonmuang Road

    Tel 053 218210

    Asst. Manager: Joy

It's near soi 7 on Moonmuang Road and they couldn't have been more helpful. Didn't even look at the visa page and said they'd be happy to write any letters for immigration that I might need - ten minutes later I had a passbook stocked up with money from a UK credit card and an a K Bank ATM card.

I would have preferred a more convenient location but I'll bet it's easier to change once you've got one. I said I'd send any friends in the same situation to see them!

In my exprience, all Kasikorn banks are the same, so why didn't you go to a more convenient branch??

  18. Chiang Mai municipality shifts from black to clear garbage bags to prevent concealment of explosives

The Chiang Mai municipality is altering all garbage bags from black bags to clear bags in order to prevent the concealment of explosives.

The mayor of Chiang Mai, Mr. Boonlert BoranuPakorn (บุญเลิศ บุรณุปกรณ), has instructed officials to distribute clear garbage bags to market vendors in the Muang Mai Market to alleviate concerns over future bombing incidents similar to the Bangkok bombings. Mr. Boonlert said that bags were easily monitored, while affirming that security in the province is adequate ensuring the safety of local residents. 100,000 clear garbage bags would be distributed before the province completely shifts form black bags to clear bags.

Meanwhile, more than 400 patrol officers have been assigned to 24 hour duty to ensure security. Mr. Boonlert affirmed that Children Day activities would still be held in Chiang Mai. The Chiang Mai mayor requested the cooperation of citizens in keeping the peace.

Source: Thai National News Bureau Public Relations Department - 09 January 2007

To me, this sounds like news meant for the masses, rather than any trash collectors... Using clear bags isn't going to make much of anything visible, unless it's the only thing in the bags...

  19. I ate dinner at the Duke's last night with a bunch of friends.

One of them has lived in Thailand on and off for many years, is extemely well-travelled and knows good food.

He just visited New York City a couple of days ago where he ate at a famous pizzaria that was recommended to him by native New Yorker friends.

He ordered a Duke's pepperoni pizza last night, raved about how good it was and swore that the one in New York had been only slightly better.

I have nothing to do with the Duke's and am only reporting this conversation as a public service. :D

Good, now I know how terrible a NY pizza can be. :o
