  1. The only one that I could find, I sent an email to a couple of weeks ago.... No response, so I'm assuming he's no longer in business..

To anyones knowlege, is there any kind of paraglider in the area??

There were three in the air over Doi Saket this weekend. I'd guess they took off from the air field that offers the powered hang glider rides to tourists. I know that they used to teach it there. Give them a call.

    The Fly Fisherman

    ?? Who??

  2. Otherwise, we have enough restaurants out here now... Thai, German, Greek, Italian, English, French... maybe I am even missing some, so we never have to go hungry for a Western meal. Lots of guesthouses and resorts, too, for people who want to come out and spend the night in Chiang Dao.

Why are there so many restaurants in such a small place?

Is Chiang Dao the next Pai? :o

Maybe like Pai, Everyone dreams of living near Chiang Dao. :D

  3. Thanks for the Sealy idea. I will look for it near Kasems.. Kurt you sound like you love Sealy... :D

The last one I bought was a kapok style, but it is too hard.. Funny, cuz the one I remember from years ago wasn't so hard..

I bought a Sealy mattress a few years ago, but it seems like it was a 'Thai' model, and it was expensive and gave me back pains. :o

  4. For about the last 6 years, I have tried sleeping on Thai mattresses.. without luck. I'm always getting hard as a rock foam or soft spring beds which I can feel each spring... What I want is what I was using my first 14 years here... A coconut bed or something 'old syle'.. I've tried those Chinese Cushions ( three pieces to bed), but wasn't impressed with the hardness.... Today, I blew another 8,000 baht to replace the one I had bought for 20,000 to replace the one I got for 6,000 baht...And so it goes.. I've found the same basic bed at Koncept store and every other bed place I have visited.

Can somone suggest a good bed store with old fashioned beds?

  5. Im sure a welder in CM could make me one, but I doubt its going to look good.

Depends on the detail of the plans you give them, their skills, how close you stay to the work, and what you call "look good". There are some very good welders in CM who have and can make to spec.

Agreed. Chiang Mai has some great welders around. :o

  6. Pretty much everyone I talked to last year said the Duke's was amazing and I know that Dave really likes to make holiday meals special.

I have booked already without even seeing the menu but he has mentioned all kinds of wonderful dishes that he intends to try.! :D

Would have thought you'd be doing xmas at the spotlight bar :D

So hard choosing between a leg and a breast though.

Why would you say that?? :o

I find UG's suggestions about eating to be quite well informed and useful to me. :D

  7. I know somebody in Thailand, teaching EFL for 31K after ten years here, whose wife makes 41k plus benefits, pensions, etc. as a Thai teacher.

Yeah, I know of a couple of Thai teachers making that much, but they have to work hard for it. I don't think it should be included here as a 'norm' for thai teachers because it isn't.

  8. So, what is the problem with using the 'international' Visa Debit Card? No hassle to get or to use, in my experience. I use it more than my credit card from AMEX or my MasterCharge...

You cannot book hotels or cards or purchase online with a debit card....that's what is my poblem with them, you would still need a creditcard....

    J

Not true for debit cards, mine anyway. I buy many things online, and have never had a problem with using a debit card.

Correct in some cases it works but only locally, but how about cars and hotels??

    J

Debit cards can be used locally for cars, hotels and shopping. The cards are not all the same in terms of acceptance, some issuing banks have restrictions about overseas transactions, and the merchants in Asia sometimes refuse them but not often in my experience.

    Not just locally.

Everything, but never tried cars, also not just locally, but in the US, too.

  10. Rimping Superstores will also cook turkeys to order with all the trimmings and deliver. They prefer a week's notice, but will perform in a shorter time frame.

Anyone know their cost this year??

Depends on the size of ya bird!

    200 baht 5-7.5 kils

250 baht 7.5 kils up - includes gravy but no stuffing (that can be ordered separately).

Okay, thanks.. I guess that means that when a restaurant owner told me it was 179 a kilo at Rimping (baked), he was nuts :o

  12. I haven't noticed any of the above, but I think you put too much of yourself into these things.. Maybe a snooze on such a beautiful day as today would help you to be more 'okay'... And please don't take offense to my note of support. :o

  13. I've just recently noticed that some Thai families in my Moo-Bahn have put bottles filled with water outside their house in the past few days.

Any ideas why this is? Praying for rain?

    Thanks

    Phil

My neighbors use them in the perimeter of their gardens to keep the dogs away...

  14. I need to get a motorbike transported from Chiang Rai to downtown Lamphun. I dont want to ride it there as it's too far and could be dangerous. Does anyone know of any transportation services in Chiang Rai that will do it? If so, approximately how much do they charge?

Why don't you rent a truck and drive it there yourself?

  15. Diet is just as important. Most foreign men I know lose some weight in Thailand naturally, the result of a new diet and lots of perspiration

I can easily say that every foreigner that I know GAINS weight here, sooner or later... :D

I agree.white rice and sticky rice is right up there on the glycemic index.

If I recall correctly, sticky rice is higher than pure sugar... :D

Travel into any small village in Thailand will yield plenty of VERY overweight women :o
