  1. Another place to check out is Siam TV / Electronic Plaza. (Bigger choice.. for some reason I often end up buying from them, they're mostly not more expensive than Tesco for the same item. and SIam TV had a bigger selection, and they deliver.

    Cheers,

    Chanchao

And most important : They can fix what they sell (usually within 1 or 2 weeks)

Supermarkets just send the damaged item to Bangkok so it takes 1 or 2 months before it comes back.

I agree with Siam TV. I have been buying from them for many, many years, with never a problem. Nothing bad about them, in my opinion..

  2. I asked a girl what i could eat for the same calories, and she said a moderately sized banana! I thought that i would much rather not eat a banana than do all that running! ...

Yeah, I went through that one... The thing is excercise doesn't just benefit you by the calories burned. It helps your body to burn calories better after you have excercised. Without excercise, I couldn't lose the weight. But for me, just one hour of moderate swimming daily was all it took. And I only burned about 300 calories in that hour. Not even a pizza slice :o

  3. Haven't seen it posted here but can highly recommend the Dukes, opposite the Sheraton on the river. Consistently good ribs, pizza and mexican food at a very sensible price. Owned by an American who has been in the food game a long time he understands the business well. Best part about it is the consistency of quality is the same every time.

Tou are the second person to make this mistake.. How can anyone say 'opposite the Sheraton'.. The Sheraton is at least 4 kilometers away...

I don't know if there are two Sheraton hotels or two Dukes restaurants in Chiang Mai but I don't think so. The Sheraton Hotel is located on the West bank bank of the Ping River between the Narwatkate Bridge and the Metal bridge, about five hundred metres from my home. The Dukes restaurant to which I refer is located on the East side of the Ping, directly opposite and is about two hundred metres from the Rimping supermarket. These things are surely true since my wife works at one of those places and I next door to the other. Please let me know if you find another Sheraton or Dukes in Chiang Mai.

Well, it's not that there is another Sheraton, but the one you are referring to exists only in the mind of you and your wife... The Sheraton is located about 3-4 klometers downstream from the Iron bridge, and it is on the East side of the River, not the West side as you stated... Here it is on the map from their website.. The Dukes is near the Tourist Police..

  5. Bomb blasts in Hatyai. Four killed including one farang English teacher.

    8 Malaysian visitors injured.

    And now the Coup D'etat.

    What will become of Hatyai?

    The answer:

Hatyai will be a ghost town.

No more tourists from Malaysia and Singapore for a long long time.

Hatyai would loose millions and millions of Bahts in terms of tourism.

The tourism industries, hotels, shop keepers, hawkers, restaurants,

and the sex related business would all be badly effected.

A similar fate that befell Bali....... The economy ruined. :o

I've been to Bali before and after the bombing. I didn't see any examples of a 'ruined economy'...

  6. I'm moving to Thailand soon & would like to live close to the beach. I'll get a motorbike to make things easier. I've got my eyes on Songkla at the moment, because it seems to have the right city/countryside balance, but the big question for me is, are the beaches decent? Are the coastlines disapearing, etc. ?? Are there any other places in south Thailand I could consider? Thanks for any info.

I also wanted to live close to the beach in 1995, and chose Songkla because I remembered from holiday there many years ago that they had a nice beach. Yes, it is a swimmers beach. Nice beach, but if you live there, you might find it lacking another such interesting place...

My wife and I lasted a bit over a year there. Housing is very tight, food is low quality (when compared to Chiang Mai), and we just became tired of the 'missings' before moving back to Chiang Mai..

  7. Thanks to all posters who have contributed positive suggestions and encouraging, peace-making comments. (Ta22 especially).

Thanks too to those who pointed out that my trust was naive, and possibly even placing "bait" before underpaid workers.

I appreciate that this is true, and that I might have considered the design of the box more carefully to try to avoid the "lucky dip" from occurring. For example, I might have placed a taller box, with a slot on the side, which would have made it more difficult to fish things out.

The lesson I have learned? Planning, and thinking more carefully about all aspects of a situation from a "Thai" point of view before acting.

Not a Thai view, but a more "careful" view, to be sure. :o

  8. After living in San Diego for many years I developed a real taste for good Mexican food and in Thailand it's so difficult to find. In Bangkok there is a Mexican place in the Rebrandt hotel on Soi22 and that's about as good as I have found. In Chiang Mai you could try the Dukes, opposite the Sheraton hotel on the river. Owned by an American guy who has been in the food game a long time, all of his dishes are excellent and really good value for money. Tuesday night is Mexican night and it is good.

Let me suggest that you take the Sheraton out of your mind... Instead, you will find Dukes just up from T.A.T., near the Iron bridge.

I think that you have not visited either place...

  9. Thanks. Interesting.

Any other stories about regulars at Oasis?

In the early 1980s I met 3 Aussies who were regulars, I mean drinking at the Oasis just about every night, who had robbed a bank down under and were living a fun life on the lam in Chiang Mai town.

Typical story from some Aussies here to have a good time, no matter the story :o

  10. ~

In aviation, a successful landing is said to depend upon "airspeed, airspeed, airspeed".

Similarly, a new restaurant initially depends upon "location, location, location".

As my brilliant Thai wife frequently points out, "If you produce good quality food, eventually you will have to struggle to keep up with the customers lined up at your door but it takes time to establish your reputation." She watches for the really crowded Thai restaurants and makes her always successful choices of new restaurants to try based pretty much on that alone. Allow me to mention that she has vast experience and creates the best Thai cuisine that I have ever had, right here in our own home.

New restaurants seeking to attract foreigners must go with location since most farangs in Thailand are not "locals" and will simply not find you while driving/riding around town.

"Somewhere between Big Bike corner and the old Mike's Hamburgers" just ain't gonna do it for visitors and I would suspect that this place will not be in business much longer.

I will however, try to get my butt down there soon simply because I very much enjoy/miss quality Mexican food.

That's a good point, and when you think of the last 4 or 5 places that have been there, none have lasted more than a year or two.. Will that luck hold for Miguels?
