  1. Sorry to you all. I'm a "newbie" & not a computer guy so maybe in trying to make reply I triggered all these repeats of the last 3 letters. Maybe someone knows how to clean up all these repeats? I tried using "edit". .. Anyway, Thanks.

    Excess quotes removed.

  2. asshol_e BAHT BUS DRIVER TRIES HIS BEST TO KNOCK ME OFF THE BACK END, but my heroics and amazing balance were enough to <deleted> up his master plan for another hospital patient.

Be careful of the friendly baht bus drivers. This ass tried slamming on the brakes and hitting the gas on my exit and entry into the back of the baht bus, but failed to toss me into oncoming traffic. (The Indians on the baht bus got a nice show as they watched me get tossed both times and almost became road pizza).

Was this before or after you told him you were only paying him 5 baht ? :o

  3. Yes you are right the potato in Ireland in the 19th century was very much the staple diet of the Irish and they mostly relied on it as their main source of food.

When it was no longer available due to a blight (a fungal type I believe) which was thought to have been transported in the hold of ships coming from America then many Irish people perished.

  4. In my local supermarket the other day the middle class Thai shoppers were simply standing aghast looking at the rice on pallets....they just couldn't come to terms with the new prices.......this is similar to the status of th potato in Ireland in the 19th century.....its more than a staple it's a fundamental part of Thai life......put this with the price of fuel and you have RAMPANT INFLATION.

staples are going up in price everywhere in the world and this is probably the most profound change in the world economy for years.....

I must disagree with your comparison to the Irish potato famine. The reason why millions died in Ireland was because a disease had infected the potato crop and potatoes were just not available. Rice is still available in Thailand but the effects of rising production costs has pushed up the price of rice along with other products.

  5. Pattaya celebrates National Scouts Day.

The 1st July is National Scouts Day here in Thailand. Scouting was first introduced in Thailand on July 1st 1911 by King Rama VI. Thailand was the third country in the world to take up Scouting. King Rama VI is fondly remembered as the "Father of Thai Scouting" and every year on Scout Day, on July 1st, Scouts pay homage to his image and take part in parades. Thailand is the only country in the world where Scouting was directly founded by a monarch. It is also honored with being one of the Founder Members of the World Organization back in 1922. Celebrations of National Scouting Day here in Pattaya were led by Khun Itipon, the Mayor of Pattaya in the grounds of Pattaya School Number 7. 1,000 Scouts and 100 Scout Leaders took part in the parade which paid homage to King Rama VI.

  7. LPG price increases ahead for motorists here in Pattaya.

With the price of petrol almost doubling in the last year, many motorists have converted their vehicles to use Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG). Last year, 3 Million Tons of LPG were consumed by modified vehicles. Already this year, 3.5 Million Tons has been used. The price of a liter of LPG has been around 8 or 9 Baht for a long time, however the price has recently increased by 3 Baht to around 12 Baht per liter and this price is expected to reach 16 Baht per liter in the near future. There are some suppliers who are hoarding LPG before the prices increase again. This practice has been deemed illegal by the Internal Trade Department in Bangkok and if caught, prison terms of up to seven years and/or a fine of up to 140,000 Baht can be imposed. Panic buying of LPG has begun and shortages have been reported around the Kingdom. In Bangkok many Taxi’s have been forced to come off the road. Supplies are now running low here in Pattaya and many stations are limiting each customer to a maximum purchase of 300 Baht.

  13. UPDATE

Deckchair operators meet at Pattaya City Hall.

On Monday Morning at Pattaya City Hall, Khun Ronagit, Deputy Mayor of Pattaya chaired a meeting regarding the issue of Deckchair Operators situated on Pattaya, Jomtien and beaches located around Larn Island. Khun Prachar, the Governor of Chonburi Province, originally told the operators that 50% of their existing plots would be given over as public areas. Over 300 deckchair operators attended the meeting and showed their opposition to this plan. The Deputy Mayor informed those who attended that the Mayor had already spoken with the Provincial Governor who agreed to allow Pattaya City Hall to manage the deckchair plots and the plan to use 50% of the land for the public had been shelved. The only condition would be that an election for the plots would still take place and operators could only own one plot. Also 50% of the income from plots must be given to Pattaya City Hall. The plan was accepted by delegates.

  14. DERANGED WOMAN GOES ON ROAD RAMPAGE IN PATTAYA

A Thai woman apparently became unaccountably deranged and with her daughter beside her went on a Mad Max-like Road Warrior rampage across Pattaya City on June 19, 2008, totally disregarding red traffic lights, with police in hot pursuit. She was only brought to an abrupt halt by police forcing her to crash into a police car blocking the road.

Yesterday, 19 June, Sergeant Ukaradetcn Petchglah of Pattaya Police was on duty at the Wat Chaimongkol traffic lights, South Pattaya, when he noticed a bronze, Toyota Vio, with Bangkok plates, driving in a highly reckless manner down Pratumnak Road. At the intersection, the motorist sped through a red light and turned left into Pattaya Beach Road. When police gave chase on motorbike, the driver turned round and sped back to Second Road, went straight through the Central Pattaya intersection and careered into North Pattaya Road. Police then radioed headquarters to co-ordinate means of putting an end to her insane rampage.

Meanwhile, the mystery car drove briefly into Sukhumvit Road, before turning right back towards South Pattaya once again. Throughout her reckless rampage, the driver drove non-stop through all the traffic lights, irrespective of their colour, with total disregard for other road users or pedestrians. Finally, having reached the end of their tether, police determined to put a stop to the woman's lunatic antics by blocking Soi Kowtalow with a police car. Normal, sane individuals might have slowed down and stopped at this juncture, but the deranged woman ran full tilt into the road block.

She obviously caused considerable damage to both cars, but to make absolutely certain and finally scotch the road warrior, they let down all her tyres. Miraculously unhurt, the woman sat passively in the driving seat with her young daughter of about 5-6, sitting beside her. Police tried to persuade the woman to get out of the car, but she adamantly refused to open the door, forcing officers to break the car's window. When police finally opened the door, the woman grabbed her daughter, put the child onto her lap and held on to her frantically.

After spending quite some time interrogating the woman, police finally ascertained that her name was Mrs. Orasa Kositjareonkul. They had apparently come to Pattaya on holiday and were staying at the Royal Cliff Hotel. However, like a prisoner of war, she refused to divulge any further details, or the reason for her insane drive-about.

Police presumed that the woman had some kind of mental problem, so they took her and the girl to the police station and contacted their relatives to see if they can shed further light upon the situation.
