  7. CHILD ABUSER GETS NINE YEARS IN JAIL AFTER EXTRADITION

    11:40 - 05 March 2008

    Express & Echo

A child abuser who fled to Thailand to escape justice has been jailed for nine years after being extradited back to Devon.

At Exeter Crown Court yesterday, Sean McMahon, 46, was told by Judge Paul Darlow: "These offences were a gross breach of trust against a girl who was aged nine and 10.

"One can only feel sympathy for the pain she felt and still feels. She had to wait a considerable time as you fled abroad to escape the consequences and you waited years until you admitted what you actually did."

Truck driver McMahon, of Whitcombe Farm, Kenton, had pleaded guilty to two charges of attempted rape, three of indecent assault and two of indecency with a child.

Prosecutor William Hart said that after McMahon's victim had revealed what had happened to her, he was arrested but initially denied anything inappropriate had happened.

He then admitted the less serious indecency offences but after being granted bail he failed to turn up at Torbay Magistrates' Court in 1999 and fled to Thailand.

He remained there until he was finally tracked down by the Thai authorities and was extradited back to the UK in January 2007.

But it was only on Monday that McMahon finally pleaded guilty to the two charges of attempted rape.

The prosecutor said the sexual abuse embarked upon by McMahon happened at the girl's home and the offences occurred in her bedroom and in the loft.

When she was video interviewed by the police, the victim said McMahon had tried to have sex with her and "it was really horrible".

When he was interviewed and finally made limited admissions, McMahon said the girl was "just growing up and in some sixth sense I was trying to be educational. It sounds so sick."

Mr Hart said the victim had turned up at court expecting to have to give evidence and when he told her that McMahon was going to enter acceptable pleas she just burst into tears.

"In her victim impact statement, she comes across as a balanced young lady who wanted justice but was not vindictive," said Mr Hart.

"She has been very sensible throughout but has been hiding a great deal of pain and misery since this defendant got his hands on her."

Mitigating, Simon Laws said the abuse happened on a handful of occasions and it was not a case of a defendant who had slipped into habitual abuse.

McMahon was also ordered to sign on the Sex Offenders' Register for life and banned from working with children indefinitely.

  8. French Tourist caught up in Jomtien bag snatch case.

In the early hours of Wednesday Morning, Police Captain Somshai from Dongtan Police Sub-Station located on Jomtien beach dealt with a case of theft involving a female French Tourist. Mrs. Fatima Chokri aged 55 from France complained to Police that two Thai Men had taken her handbag in Soi Watboonganjanaram Temple as she was walking along the street. Inside the bag was 4,700 Baht, 150 Euros, and a mobile phone. The victim was able to give detailed descriptions of both men and one of them was quickly caught. Khun Pansak aged 31 who works as a motorbike taxi driver in Jomtien, was brought to the stationhouse and confessed to the crime as he had borrowed cash from a money lender and was under pressure to send the lender some money. Unfortunately his accomplice was not caught and he is thought to be in possession of the stolen bag.

  10. Hi All

is the Pattaya music festival 2008 still on 21st March or has it been moved to June because of the death of someone in the royal family

    Thanks

    An article from Pattaya Mail

Music festival date postponed to June

Schedule changed to observe mourning for HRH Princess Galyani

    Vimolrat Singnikorn

The Grand Pattaya International Music Festival of 2008 has been postponed owing to the 100 days of mourning for Her Royal Highness Galyani.

The festival is being organized by the Tourism Authority of Thailand in conjunction with Pattaya City and had been scheduled for March 14 to 16.

Chaiwat Charoensuk (right), director of the TAT Central Region 3 Office, tells Pattaya Mail that the music festival has been postponed until June.

Following the passing of Her Royal Highness the Princess on January 2, the cabinet had issued a resolution that included the postponing or canceling of any non-essential stage performances for a period of 100 days.

Chaiwat Charoensuk, director of the TAT Central Region 3 Office, in an exclusive interview with Pattaya Mail, said the event would now be staged in June, although a firm date has yet to be set.

Chaiwat said that June is a low period for Pattaya tourism, and the festival could help to generate visitor arrivals if it is properly promoted.

“If top singers from abroad are invited, then that will attract foreign tourists as well,” he said. “Regarding Thai attendees, most of them are students and we believe that moving the event to the low season will not have any substantial downward effect on visitors but could in fact stimulate tourism during that period.”

The organizers do, however, concede that this would be the time of the rainy season, and that in previous years much of the festival has been staged in non-enclosed areas. Chaiwat said that discussions are currently underway to find an appropriate location.

  11. 8 Million Baht’s worth of Bank Drafts found by two Hotel Workers.

Two kind-hearted women came to Pattaya Police Station on Friday Evening and spoke with Police Captain Sureeyar. He was presented with an envelope containing bank drafts issued by the Bangkok Bank totaling just over 8 million Baht. The checks appeared to relate to the purchase of a condominium at View Talay Condominiums located on the Thappraya Road in Jomtien. The two women who work at the Asia Pattaya Hotel off the Pratamnuk Road saw the envelope fall to the ground after a motorbike flew past them. One of the checks was made to Mr. Carl Robert Eckman and the other was made to the View Talay Company. We commend Khun Jamlat aged 46 and Khun Prompan of the same age and Police are now attempting to reunite the checks with their owner at this time.

  12. The vast majority of `Thai` gold is actually imported with over 100 tonnes of gold being imported per annum into the Kingdom.

There is as far as I know only one major gold mine in Thailand the Chatree Mine which is Australian owned and produces about 150,000 ounzes of gold per annum with production increasing every year. There are a large number of old mine workings which still have some gold deposits but they are not worked on a commercial basis.

The so called Thai gold is 96.5% pure gold or approximately 23 Karat and is a rich deep yellow colour. The other 3.5% is usually made up of bronze or silver.

This high karat gold is easily exchangeable at most gold shops for cash and they usually have the buying in price displayed in the shop window or outside the premises on a board. These prices are usually updated on a daily basis. Some gold shops will not exchange lower karat gold pieces as the cost of getting the alloys from the gold is too expensive.

The difference to the West when purchasing gold in Thailand is that Thai sellers normaly only put a 5% or so mark up on the spot price of gold plus a small amount for the workmanship whereas in the West we see markups of 40% plus.

  13. Bought some Pakistan yellow gold looks same as Thai will my wife like? Or say not the same as Thai Gold!

It all depends on the Karat.

Gold's purity is measured in karats. 24 karat is pure gold, but its purity means it is more expensive and less durable than gold that is alloyed with other metals. Different alloys are used in jewellery for greater strength, durability and colour range.

Thai ladies like the higher karat gold which can be exchanged for cash less a commission at good gold shops.

Make sure that the gold which you buy is hallmarked and bought from a reputable source and carries the appropriate markings of authenticity. If in doubt get it checked out.
