  1. If it makes anyone feel good, Google runs 100% Unix in all of its server farms. Imagine what they'd have to pay for that many licenses for Windows. I say 100%, but they do use Server and Windows in the "office" to do internal and external work that doesn't become part of the information we see. All of their employee desks have Windows as clients of Server. Linux can't match that. Even if it could, where would they hire the expertise to run it when all of the experts in enterprise computing are Microsoft adherents?

This post was brought to you by the 1990's tongue.png

Do you think poor Google can't afford licences? I'd guess their primary benefit in using linux is open source code, they can implement whatever they need and whatever they want, they have their own filesystem [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_File_System ], they can easily work on improving TCP stack, think TFO, PRR [ http://googlecode.blogspot.com/2012/01/lets-make-tcp-faster.html ] and I'm sure there are countless other examples. As a side note, there must be some reason Goldman Sachs is using linux for their HFT systems and hired Ulrich Drepper. If you still think linux is only about getting a free OS (i.e. with no cost), you're missing the point entirely. Last thing about your comment WRT google employees, half of them are running linux and that includes desktop users [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goobuntu ]

But the thread is about Linux as Desktop... In a laptop the best option is to have Linux installed as a virtual machine in Windows, since the power energy optimization in all the current distros are very poor, and that need so much work in closed drivers (not open source) and stuff like that.

  2. Emerald pond I've been there 4 months ago

    200 bath for Tourist

    20 for Thai

The hotspring is part of a national park so I guess it's the same price

all the touristic attractions controlled by the thai government national parks etc is 200 / 20 without exception, one year ago I was in 5 or 6 national parks, with waterfalls or rivers and the rules are almost the same too.

In tour trips the fee is included.

  3. Very unlikely to get a 5 year licence on a visa waiver or tourist visa - I tried and failed in Pattaya.

Not sure if you can get Thai IDP on a one year "temporary" DL - someone

else should know, however it may also depend on the place you apply at.

If push comes to shove could you not just get a new IDP by post from your home country?

Funny, I checked again to know if there is a way and I can! I need to send a legal document authorizing a friend to get my IDP and send the original national drive permit and other things than can be scanned here and printed there, later my friend must send me the documents back and the IDP and that it's, a quite strange process but is possible ^_^

  4. Something that I don't like from South America is the high delinquency and corruption, there are very nice places to live, great food, good prices, amazing people but security is something that you'll miss

I lived in Chile, Argentina and Brazil, some of my closest friend have been lived in Ecuador, Peru and Puerto Rico, the first barrier is the language, very few people speak English South America is just Spanish everywhere inclusive in Brazil where the official language is Portuguese.

I am in Ao Nang now, I love the mix between montains, beach, jungle, lovely and nice people (not in the touristic areas) plus all the good and bad of Thailand

I am looking Cambodia and Vietnam as alternatives just for try something different

  5. From wikipedia:

    Satoshi Nakamoto

Satoshi Nakamoto was the pseudonymous person or group of people who designed the original bitcoin protocol in 2008 and launched the bitcoin network in 2009. Beyond bitcoin, no other links to this identity have been found. His involvement in the original bitcoin protocol does not appear to extend past mid-2010.

Nakamoto was active in making modifications to the bitcoin network and posting technical information on the BitcoinTalk Forum until his contact with bitcoin users began to fade. Until a few months before he left, he was responsible for creating the majority of the bitcoin protocol, only rarely accepting contributions.

In April 2011, Satoshi communicated to a bitcoin contributor saying he had “moved on to other things.”

    Identity

Investigations into the real identity of Satoshi Nakamoto have been attempted by The New Yorker and Fast Company. Fast Company's investigation brought up circumstantial evidence that indicated a link between an encryption patent application filed by Neal King, Vladimir Oksman and Charles Bry on 15 August 2008, and the bitcoin.org domain name which was registered 72 hours later. The patent application (#20100042841) contained networking and encryption technologies similar to bitcoin's. After textual analysis, the phrase "...computationally impractical to reverse" was found in both the patent application and bitcoin's whitepaper. All three inventors explicitly denied being Satoshi Nakamoto.

  6. Myth or reality?

I arrived in Thailand just weeks before the red shirt protest, walking around the democracy monument, I've been a long talk with some thai red shirt that describe me with full of details what happens that day, relative to this news he told me that 4 army vehicles (including tanks) come from the MC-donald corner with one or two helicopters (now i don't remember well) one tank uses the machine gun over the people but at the same point from some of the building there was one or two snipers and they kill a key person of the red shirt, he told me the name of that "leader"

the funny fact, I invite him some beers but we walked more than kung <deleted> to some creepy area of Bangkok, before he open a door of a Thai tourist information where a old farang woman tried to sell me a vacation plan during half hour!! xD later the guy was outside with a big bottle of beer probably the second or the third one, he asked me "you have your tour" and that freak me out, he offer me beer, but in my mind I was in defcon x ready to explode or wherever, so I thought that the beer have something, and probably some of their friend were there or waiting in some deadly bar etc etc so I give some money to him and said that I was exhausted with the weather and the annoying old woman trying to sell me tours to everywhere, and just let him speaking alone.

but really the histories were very interesting...

  7. just for be informative http://gizmodo.com/5994229/this-video-explains-everything-you-need-to-know-about-bitcoin-in-three-minutes

right now bitcoins are pretty high but sure they will low again.

I don't know so much about the coin market but from the IT side for me is impossible to look at this seriously "NN" created the protocol and the code and unless behind is a big organization I guess this will be illegal in many countries, as a black market, tax issues and stuff like that.

But with the coins where the same hundreds ago.

"Don Francisco" sponsored some websystem with a similar virtual coins but I didn't find nothing about, but sure this is not the first or the last attempt to create virtual money

  8. If you have address, no problem. You must get letter from your Embassy or ''perhaps'' your local immigration will issue the letter.

Or get it from the local Amphur's office as I did with the help of my landlord when I lived up North.

OP it is not really a difficult procedure to get the car in your name and definitely worth the effort because it is yours 100% and you can sell it or whatever you wish in the future.

It depends a lot on the person on who s name it is now .

As we know not every one is dependable here in Thailand.

Incase of any doubts its defenatly worth the afford with a bit of luck you do the hole thing in a day .

Thanks for the info, I know that it depends but I have a very good idea of the variables thanks!

I don't know I the next is better to a new thread but...

I've been in the "transit office" the office that give the drive licenses to Thai citizens, my gf renew their license from one year to 5 years, we ask about if I can get an international license for she and for me, they said that for thai and farang they can give international license but first one year license later 5 year license and later some test and the international, but was not clear about the "tourist visa" they said that I 'should' have a non immigrant visa but was not clear.

in your experience, do you know if there are some shortcuts?? I know that probably my national license plus the expired international license will be ok for some countries of Asia but I prefer to have everything updated (I am planning a trip around Asia in car)

I have my ChiIean drive license ok, the international drive one expired and just thai tourist visa

  9. I have some friends from south America that apply to different visas to NZ as partners important points is that you need to show evidence that you can support she and that you really have a relation with she, travel together, passport stamps, pictures in different locations together "like the postal one" not like san patrick xD, that was very strange to my friends, in the interview or in other check point process they were asked for more pictures! like the first ones were not good enough to probe a long relationship.

for example I know that Brazilians in Queenstown have been cheating a lot with fake partner relations just for extend the visa to find work etc so that immigration office usually reject all applications from Brazilians in Queenstown, but not in other cities! probably that is a big difference between Bangkok or apply online

sometimes is about the people that read the application, one can approve another disapprove.

Just say your best true something that you can easily probe.

sorry for not give a better info.

  10. Hi, I am thinking to bought a car to travel around, it's possible to cross the frontiers with my own car?

What I need for example to go to Laos, Vietnam, China, or Cambodia?

I know that Myanmar should be impossible but for Nepal, India?

    My dream...

I want to travel in car around 4 or 6 months probably more if we can, stopping for a while in the cities that we like etc.

My idea is from Thailand to Greece, avoiding as possible Pakistan and Afghanistan. or wherever another complicated country at the moment of travel.

    All comments are welcome ;)

  11. So think about how cheap the 2nd hand BMW is here........ see why.

    2002/3 BMW 523 cost 3.55 million

    2002/3 Honda Accord 2.4 cost 1.4 million

    2002/3 Toyota Camry 2.4 cost 1.4 million..

So today you can buy all 3 makes, 2nd hand for somewhere around 700,000 baht. so BMW is very cheap 2nd hand here. maybe a better way to look at it..

    2002/3 Honda Accord 2.4 cost 1.4 million !!!!

In NZ I bought 5 years ago a 1990 Honda Accord with the WOF ready for just 60000 bath ^_^

Can I ask if with a Tourist Visa can I buy a car here?

  12. Thanks for share the info, in my experience NZ is so fast for legal proceedings or banking.

I want to go to NZ with my Thai GF ...for me is easy, I can get 3 months every time that I want enter to the country the same here in Thailand with the plus that I not need to fly to Fiji xD just walk to some frontier and stamp 3 months more.

But for She... the good thing is that she had two degree in IT and Management, no stable job as me, I usually work full time, or per project but 100% remotely (Virtual CTO), teaching her my business while we travel in Asia, I really want that she try the culture of New Zealand for me is one of the best countries in the world for quality of life, travel, sustainability, green energies, friendly people, good integration with their natives, an awesome country.

  13. the favorites (called bookmarks in FF)

    the easy way is:

go to Bookmark -> import and export -> export as a html file

If you use Firefox for Mac only do the same go to Bookmark -> import and export -> IMPORT as a html file

the html file it's very good too, all your bookmarks in only one page with title and description

  14. In my words: professionals that work and travel using internet and network devices as a virtual office, working from different locations in the globe.

Thanks. I called this Office nomads smile.png

I'm in the process of changing my office to be nomad. I mean by this that I would love to go back to traveling and have everything essential backed on the network. The idea is that I do not loose too much even if I would lost my computer and everything I have with me.

    How do you do this?

What I have been thinking is something like this:

    - Use Dropbox or Google Drive (they don't yet support native linux client) for essential documents and music files. 50GB should be more than enough.

    - Pictures to the picasa, which can hold basically all the pictures which are less than 2048px in either dimension.

This way I would loose the original copies of the pictures if I don't do a heavy selection and keep the best originals on the dropbox storage.

Picasa is great, but it's fault is that it does not support hierarchical structure. It's all flat and slightly difficult to maintain.

I also have an micro server on Amazon (Singapore), which can be used as data storage. The cost is USD0.1 per GB per month. 50GB would cost USD5, which is comparable to dropbox cost.

I can copy my files with rsync to the server, but it's still not as convenient as dropbox.

For larger files (movies etc) it would be great to have peer sharing between nomads. Place an hard drive to friends home, which would be mostly static, but accessible via the internet. This would be an backup option when travel hard drive is lost.

Please share your knowledge how do you manage your data while you do not have static location.

Yes, is a pain that, I am actually the firestorm / security guy for two companies and I must carry all the important backups passwords with me in a safe way too. But I have access to the servers and I used as a backup since upload speed in a real emergency just suck, this is my own plan i use some hacks to hide the folders ./ / and ./ y: / and another hacking like stuff

I use dropbox and box.net plus ftp servers in a combination with TrueCrypt (I use True Crypt for fully encrypt my work laptop)

I use PortableApps.com so in a emergency I can create a work station with all that I need, I have a old server too with the same as a remote access, I have access to the router with ddwrt and I use WOL to turn on the server and taskbar click + ALT F4 to shutdown or hibernate.

My work Laptop have enogth resources to run many VMs and I was testing with a Linux portable in a botable external usb to use in infected computers (as another way to work)

I have everything dupicated or triplicated not music (280 GB) or movies at all (except something that really like or difficult to download from internet), only work and project stuff, and my pictures and videos (350 GB) I already lose 10 GB aprox in accidents, I use youtube as a online backup for 50% of the videos.

I have skype too with a number in US and worlwide subscription.

  15. BTW I found this information useful since looks like everything is here for start a business in Thailand, in this case is a franchise of Remax that i found interesting since I already work with Remax and other Real Estate companies, but for me is so much inversion for a market full of ghost.

    http://remax.co.th/start-your-business.aspx?Lang=en-US

RE/MAX Thailand will guide you all the way to success and will help you to establish your company in Thailand.

Our legal department will help you during the registration process of your company.

    Regulation:

The process to register a Thai a limited-company in Thailand, we can help you and ensure that your business is operating in as little as 2-4 weeks.

For Thailand company registration, Thailand work permit, and Thailand visas.

The basics of limited-company registration in Thailand:

The most-utilized type of legal entity in Thailand is the limited-company. A limited-company is owned by a minimum of three shareholders and managed by at least one director. One of the biggest advantages of the Thai limited-company is that it is legally a stand-alone company under Thai law.

As for company registration in Thailand, it’s important to be aware that the at least 51 percent of a company’s shares must be held by Thai citizens. The remaining shares may be held by anyone. In spite of this, it is still possible for a foreigner to maintain controlling interest in a company by issuing two separate classes of shares: ordinary and preferred.

Shareholders with ordinary shares have more voting rights in the company. At least one director is chosen by the shareholders. Only the director(s) is authorized to sign anything on behalf of the company, and individual shareholders are only liable to their percentage of shares.

Financially, when registering a Thai company, you must have at least two million THB of capital in order to be eligible for a work permit. However, this does not mean that you need to have this amount of money to start, it is the merely the limited liability of your Thai limited company.

There is an exception if the company is established only to hold property, in which only one million THB is necessary.

Step 1 of Thai company registration is the name reservation. Naturally all businesses require a Name, therefore you must first provide the desired name for your company along with two alternative names then submit these to Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce. The Registrar will then verify that no similar company names have been reserved and that the name does not violate any ministerial rules. Note: you cannot use any RE/MAX Name or any trademarks in your company name.

This step of Thai company registration is very simple and only requires 2-3 days to be completed.

Step 2 of Thai company registration; File a Memorandum of Association (MOA)

Once your company name has been reserved, all shareholders must sign a Memorandum of Association (MOA). The MOA is a document which provides the names and personal information (such as contact details) for all of the company’s shareholders, as well as the company’s address, registered capital, and intended scope of business activities.

Once all shareholders have signed the MOA, it may be submitted to the Ministry of Commerce along with all of the documents pertaining to the company’s registration in Thailand. The Ministry of Commerce is located within Bangkok, but if the company’s office is located outside of Bangkok province, these documents may be submitted the filing office of the province where the company is located.

Once this step of Thailand company registration is completed and processed, the Ministry of Commerce will then issue the company affidavit, certification, list of shareholders and company articles of association.

Step 3 of Thai company registration; Tax and Vat registration

All documents associated with the registration of the company's Tax ID Card and Vat Certificate must be submitted to the Central Filing Office of the Revenue Department.

Also, as part of the process of obtaining a VAT Certificate, you must obtain permission from the landowner of your company’s address if your company does not own the land outright.

Step 4 of Thailand company registration; Open a Thailand corporate bank account with internet banking

Once the Thai company registration is completed, most companies will probably want to open a corporate bank account in Thailand. The company directors must be present.

If any of the signatories for the bank account are foreigners, some banks will require each of the foreign signatories to submit a valid work permit prior to opening the account. This can be completed within a day.

Step 1-4 will take approx 2-3 weeks.

Step 5 of Thailand company registration; Applying Thailand work permit

In order to obtain a Thailand work permit, you must first have a Non-immigrant visa. (often called a Non-B Visa)

For a Thai work permit you will need to submit all necessary documentation to the Department of Labor. If submitted correctly, an application can be processed in as little as 7 days.

Further, for each foreigner working within your company, your company is required to have a registered capital of 2,000,000 THB, i.e. if you have two non-Thai working in your company, it is required to have a registered capital of at least 4,000,000 THB. However this does not mean that you need to have this amount of money to start, it is the limited liability of your Thai limited company.

Note: For each foreigner that work in the company you will need to hire 4 Thai staff.

  16. Hi ITGabs. Nice to see you back on TV. Seems like you disappeared from the forum recently.

Hi Dork! Nice to read you again! and yes I've been a little busy

I am a digitial nomad and every time I arrive in a new location

i curse google for blocking access with my Thunderbird client to my gmail accounts.

It is a real pain. bah.gif

I have to go to web access and tell them it is really me

I don't like google services since I almost lose one domain for the same reason (google checkout) I'll never trust again in they, I still use gmail but as a secondary account or backup

  17. Still in that situations. you can use this method, like hack the hacker

bascicly is a combination of keyboard, the visual keyboard and copy and paste chars of the password from text sources.

the key loggers are only that, get name of the windows program and sometimes the webpage name and all the keystrokes.

another level it's monitoring the copy paste behavior

pro level is take screenshots wherever you do a click

the pc of mi gf was infected and I saw a keylogger, so in one minute searching the latest files i found the file with all the passwords xD, I did some test and only get keystrokes no copy and paste or screenshots.

usually the keyloggers are VB6 is quite easy to made one, but not so easy to hide.

  19. In my words: professionals that work and travel using internet and network devices as a virtual office, working from different locations in the globe.

    from Wikipedia

Digital nomads are individuals that leverage digital technologies to perform their work duties, and more generally conduct their lifestyle in a nomadic manner. Such workers typically work remotely—from home, coffee shops and public libraries to collaborate with teams across the globe.

Nomadic entrepreneurs & professionals often work as freelance writers, photographers, affiliate marketers, web designers, software developers, graphic designers, and other types of knowledge workers who can perform work duties irrespective of physical location. They frequently use new technologies like a smartphone, wifi, and web-based applications to enable their lifestyle, and earn an income wherever they live or travel. Digital nomads also often utilize coworking spaces and shared offices in major cities around the world.

My last job at office (as a example) was in Chile in a outsourcing company 5-6 years ago, But I am not a freelancer or that not work for me, I usually work fulltime remotely, as a virtual worker, with benefits, vacations etc, as a regular job with the only difference that I am virtual. I lived in Chile, Argentina, New Zealand and now in Thailand, probably I will move to Vietnam (cheap) or New Zealand (clean and nice for social)
