  1. If all else fails, or, if you want to keep it real simple, buy Sterling cashiers cheques from Bangkok Bank, drawn on BB London, courier the cheques for deposit to your UK bank, clearing time is three days and maximum value per purchase without questions is USD 20K (buy multiple cheques if need be) - same rate of exchange as wire transfer.

I've sent money back to the UK from SCB a couple of times but they make you change it into pounds here so they can get their cut. With the low exchange rate maybe this is not the time to do a transfer.

  2. Anyone down in Pattaya know where I could buy a new remote control for a Hatari Fan model number 25680?

I have two Hatari fans which I require new remote controls for. The old remotes are beyond repair but the fans are still good, we shall be coming down to Patters soon for a holiday so any info would be helpful

    Thanks

    Wee Jimmy

  3. I’ve known Guemlum for probably the 6 years he has been coming to Nong Khai and I would like to say that I have never met a more polite and nicer guy in my 12 years here. I also admire his composure in the situation he was drawn into, I will also add that the aggressive hooligan who approached him had a lucky escape, maybe not so lucky next time.

  4. I have the same problem. My ticket to Glasgow with Emirates was 46,400 Baht at the end of September whilst my colleagues ticket Glasgow Bangkok was £590. I’ve tried to buy from a UK travel agent or direct from Emirates and use the ticket BKK- Glass, Glass-BKK but the price is actually more. I reckon if your flying back and forth you must get a one way ticket from BKK to the UK, then buy the return from the UK. This is what I will be doing next trip. I put it down to greed on the Thai side.

Let me know if you find a cheaper way.

  5. :) ..Nobby's upto his old tricks again. He used to do exactly the same in Nongkhai. He would walk around the block pretending he was going for a stroll, and would look inside every bar to see if any of his customers were drinking or eating in another bar. This would make him furious and as a result would confront his customers and bar owners. He tried it on with me on one occasion, so I gave him a piece of my mind and threatened to put him flat on his back. Never happened again, but I think that his actions resulted in him moving on to Surin, and I can see the same thing happening very soon. Good luck Nobby!!..555

    Hi Mr G,

I have got to agree with you. We were glad when he left NK.

  6. Doctor Dave

Doctor Dave had slept with one of his patients and felt guilty all day long.

No matter how much he tried to forget about it, he couldn't. The guilt and sense of betrayal were overwhelming.

But every now and then he'd hear an internal reassuring voice in his Head that said: 'Dave, don't worry about it. You aren't the first medical practitioner to sleep with one of their patients and you won't be the last.... And you're single. Just let it go.'

But invariably another voice in his head would bring him back to reality.

    Whispering......

    Dave.......

    Dave........

    Dave........

    Dave........

    Dave........

    Dave........

    Dave........

    Dave........

    Dave........

    Dave........

    ........ you're a vet, Dave

  7. Dear all

This is my first post on the site, although I have been an avid reader over the past 1.5 years. Any advice from you techies is welcomed and appreciated.

I am looking to buy a Pay-as-you-go Internet Dongle which allows me to surf the web and use skype. I think I will need something with a good speed, like 2mbps.

I am unsure as where and which to buy or if it will even work in this neck of the woods. (Chaiyhapum)

Could someone point me in the right direction where I can get this type of information.

    I would like to know:

    - Which dongle works best around Chaiyhapum?

    - How much does it cost?

    - Will Skype work with it?

    Kind regards

    Menno

  8. I have 3 centrifugal pumps...

all draw water from the klong.

    Two are cheap china 1hp...

and the third is good quality Italian 2hp.

Often they "freeze" and trip the breaker on startup.

    As a last resort,

I "tap-n-bang" the intake metal with a small hammer.

    Requires 2 people...

one at the breaker and other at the pump.

Anyone have suggestions of a "fix"?

    Thanks for all suggestions.

Maybe the inner shaft has a slight bend or the shaft has no centre bearing and you are getting a bit of a whip from the shaft as it starts. Could also be a bearing about to collapse?

  9. Phone Emirates and explain your predicament . They let my mate pay with his credit card , Then he scanned his card E mailed it to his girlfriend, so she had a copy of the card when boarding. They Ok that .

Yes, it is a lot of dosh but it's because I'm returning to Thailand 20/12/09. it's close to Christmas. I've tried a lot of airlines and they are all about the same price. I'ts also easier for me flying into Glasgow.

  10. Used one a while ago and I expected a bottle to drop out full of water but I got my feet washed instead. The wife was standing about 50 metres away and nearly peed herself laughing.

    I’ll know next time.

  11. Well yesterday I went to the Thai equivalent of Makro to have a look, its down the road from Carrefour big store has everything.

And in the freezers there are pies Cornish pasties proper sausages and the bacon is a lot cheaper

How long has the Carrefour been open in Udon?

Somebody told me it had only recently opened and they were on the waiting list to get a job there.

Carrefour opened on the 1st April this year.

  12. Get someone to stand guard & watch for them doing it again then give them a good hiding. Another alternative would be to get a heavy to pay them a visit/confront them and warn them if they do it again it will not just be a warning that they will get.

  13. I flew to BKK from GLA in june with emirates.

the outbound flight was delayed due to a technical fault. flight was scheduled to leave at 14.15 but - after several re-scheduled departure times - didnt actually leave until 11.00 the following morning (resulting in a v grumpy game).

accommodation & breakfast was provided at the GLA holiday inn.

I wrote to emirates on my return and asked for some form of compensation - they offered 25000 skywards miles which Im led to believe is only enough to upgrade to business class from UK to dubai (one way).

I wrote back basically telling them to shove that offer up their backside and asked for a upgrade to business to BKK return.

emirates replied stating the original 25k skywards offer would be their limit.

so where do I stand with this? is there any standard compensation for lengthy delays? or is it just a case of take the 25k and be done with it?

    cheers

    game

    :)

I also fly with Emirates from Glasgow.

25,000 is the required amount of air miles for the first leg of the journey but remember you will have to pay an additional £40.00 Tax at Glasgow.

I remember once the plane was 3 hours late in leaving Dubai for Bangkok so I ask for compensation and I got upgraded to business class Bangkok to Glasgow on my next trip.

I do the round trip 2 times a year and I seem to get a lot of upgrades.

    Keep at them.

  14. Hi

Does anybody know if you can buy such a thing here in Thailand (preferably Phuket). This sort of washing line has 3 or 4 arms and opens up like a very large umbrella. I have visited Lotus, Big C, Carefour, Villa Market, Home Pro, Home Works, but cannot find one. I have very limited options to attach my own washing line to anything (i.e. trees, posts etc). I already have fold up clothes dryers, but would really prefer a washing line!

    Cheers

Try to get one made. I'm also thinking of making one.

  15. Hi, I just want to obtain some simple advice about health care in Thailand.

In Australia where I am from we cannot see a specialist without seeing a general practitioner GP first. Does such a rule apply in Thailand? When do people recommend seeing a specialist or a general doctor in Thailand?

I have had an sore ear on and off for a little while and people have been telling me to see a ENT doctor, that a general medical clinic is not recommended. (It gets sore to the point where it is awkward to sleep whilst resting on that ear, but never painful when eating.) What do people think?

Someone suggested I go to a hospital. In Australia of course one would only go to hospital in an emergency. Is it different in Thailand?

Do people drop in for a bit of advice and treatment from a local pharmacy? What are people's experiences of this approach?

I live in Chiang Mai. What are the costs of various options likely to be eg. is hospital more or less expensive? (Haven't got health or travel insurance.)

I live in Udon and have had the same. Sore ear and glands. down here ther are independant ENT clinics and I would think you will have the same in Chang Mai. Ask some of the locals where they are. The cost was only about B600 and this included the pills he gave me.

    Good Luck.
