  1. Does anyone know the English name for this vegetable? A colleague suggested it was a type of morning glory but FG does not agree.

They are (Allium tuberosum) or Chinese Chives, also refered to as Garlig Chives or flat Chives.

    straight from the book.

  2. I have been living in Thailand for ten years and am going back to England for the first time in this period. :o

I have a one year dependants visa and I am buying my return ticket in Thailand. My question is, will the immigration require an onward ticket from Thailand when I return, hopefully in a months time. I have heard they are getting keen on this, although I believe it was always a requirement, but with me having a one year visa, does it affect me aswell.

    Regards

    The Fat Boy

You should have no problems with this but remember to get a re-entry stamp from immigration before you go, Cost 1000 Baht. I do this every 3 month.

  3. Have 'Gay Bar' Nong Khai. They don't push in your face. My mate and our wives go there regularly. It's one of Nong Khais best places to drink and eat. Close to the market.

Do you know the name of the place?

It's called the ''Thasadej Bar'' It's also at the start of the market where the Sam Laws sit.

  4. When and if you get these new codes do you have to send the box away to get fixed and what is the cost of this?? My mate has this satellite TV and he wishes he had gone for UBC. Every time the box goes away to be fixed he has to pay. Last time it was 8000 Baht.

  5. My friend is in LOS on a 30 day entry stamp. Although he and his Thai wife own a house here, he only stays for a few weeks so has not been able to get a Thai driving licence. On a trip to Issan he was stopped at a police road block on the 304 between Kabin Buri and Korat. When he produced his UK driving licence the police said it wasn't acceptable, that he should have International licence and fined him 300 baht. I think they asked for more at first but dropped it down to 300. About 30 hours later they were returning to Pattaya again on the 304 when they were stopped almost in the same place. His wife spoke to the police saying they only stopped them the day before for the same problem ( UK driving licence ) The police said that was more than 24 hours ago so you have to pay again. This time 100 baht after a bit of banter. I told my friend that as far as I knew you could drive with a UK licence providing you were on a tourist visa and these cops were just after some tea money. Does anyone know if this is correct? :o:D

Probably they saw a farang and as you say were just after some tea money. I have been stopped with my uk licence and it was accepted. I think it depends on where you are. I got stopped on the same road for having spot lights on my truck. They wanted 1000 Baht but dropped it to 100 Baht and asked me to take the lights off the truck, as I did this I took the cops photo and told him I would put it on the internet and send it to the papers. They were not very happy. When I left the cop shop the first thing I saw was a police man on a motor cycle with spot lights. The cops in Thailand are the same as any cop. Once the jacket is on the badness is in them.

You will have guessed by now that I hate cops.

  6. I bought a GPRS modem about 1 month ago. I was told if I paid 300 Baht per month I would get 40 hours Internet use . My problem now is that I don't know how to top up my credit.

Have I mistaken what I was told and the credit will run out as it does on my Mobile?

Do I remove the Sim and put it in my mobile to top up?

How do I know how much credit I have left to play with?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Wee Jimmy.

  7. Does anyone know where I can get a haggis from? I am not Scottish, but am partial to a good haggis. I haven’t had a nice British Sunday lunch for well over a year now and have developed a craving for one :o . I don’t know where to get sprouts or cabbage either, but the real problem will be finding haggis.

    Any pointers appreciated.

Try Simple Simon up at soi 5 on Jomtien beach. I got some from there about 3 yrs ago. It was good but not like the haggis from UK. You will get frozen sprouts at Belucky Na Klua Rd. You will have subsitute the turnip with the Giant Whie Radish which can be bought at most shops.

On Monday I took my wife to Khon Kaen to renew her passport. I had read on this forum about a restaurant which is about 56 klms from Udon. We found the restaurant which is called "Orr Pla Pau" situated at Klm post 59 going south and Klm post 57 as you drive north from Khon Kaen. I recommend this place to everyone who might fancy a bite to eat. Thai and English food. Also a lovely wine. The guy who runs the place is called Alan. It's worth a visit and it's not expensive.

  9. Mate of mine got a quote of 550000 Baht for 11 implants and new teeth at a dentist surgery in Udon. He neerly colapsed. We thought the dentist was taking the p### so we went to the police' who took him around 4 other hospitals and dentist shops. The quotes were all about the same.

  10. Bringing the family down to Pattaya this weekend.  We'll be staying at a condo near Foodmart, down from the Go-kart circuits.

Saturday night is going to be 'Lad night out' and I'd appreciate any suggestions regarding the following:

    - To start the evening off I want a good old Indian.  Especially Tikha or Tandoori.

    - After that, some lubrication is required.  - Are there any places with 'ale' on tap?  In the past I've drunk at the German microbrewery place, near Big C, but I'm gagging for a proper pint.

    - If possible I'd like to watch some rock and/or Blues (with the Ashes being shown in the background).

    -  To end the evening off it'll either be back to the curry house or, if there really is a  god, a doner kebab, British high street style.

Don't get too pissed mate I don't want any early morning calls from you.  Keep a spare watch in your pocket and a chain on your wallet.    I believe you are known to be a walking disaster when your off the leash.

    Have a good time.

    Cheers.

  11. You must start to make arrangements to return to Thailand together sometime in the foreseeable near future. She must be a willing party to the trip to visit family or whatever reason you can think of that she will accept. Don't just throw the idea of a trip to Thailand at her, introduce it slowly, if possible get her to suggest it.

Meanwhile, do not antagonise her. Go out of your way to maintain the happy side of her character. Deal with her "bad periods" as best you can.

Never let her know your plans.

    Sleep with one eye open.

Work towards getting on the plane and freedom.

Thats what I would do. Best for everyone.

    Hi eagles,

I also had this with a farang woman ten years ago. She was the same when she consumed alcohol. Wrecked the house, went to the pub alone, and went to the police and told them a bundle of lies. Fortunately the police new her and to cut the story short she was the one who ended up in trouble. Watch what your doing or she could end up putting you in the nick. ###### knows what she could be telling others and the police about you. These young coppers are apt to take the word of a pretty face rather than the truth. Get her a "one way ticket" back to Thailand and start again. There are plenty more to choose from over here, you don't need to put up with that SH**. Get out now!

    Good luck.

  12. It’s been a tough week. Early this week I had some sharp pains in my right side. After a couple of days it felt like I had some torn stomach muscles. Of course I ignored it. Thursday my girlfriend finally convinced me that I HAD to go to the clinic to see a doctor. The doctor poked around on my abdomen some and told her that I had to go to the hospital immediately. He was pretty sure it was acute appendicitis. I went to the closest private hospital, Muang Loei Ram. They took a urine sample, a blood sample, an X-ray and did an ultrasound. I told them I had last eaten at 10 o'clock in the morning. The surgeon said that it is better to wait at least 8 hours before doing surgery. He was pretty certain that my appendix would not burst waiting that long. At 6 o'clock I was on the cutting table. That's the last I remembered until 7:30. That was Thursday evening. Yesterday, Saturday they released me and here I am at home. Since I have never had anything like that I don't have anything to compare it to. That said it was and still is very painful. I would have much preferred to go to Bangkok but I was in no condition to make the trip. I was up at 3 AM this morning because I'm tired of being in bed. I couldn't sleep anyways. My girlfriend was upset at the hospital because she said that they overcharged me a lot. The bill was 48,000 baht for everything. ($1,170) I told her not to worry about it because my Thai insurance will pay it anyways. I ended up getting really pissed off at her for harping at me about it. I was/am in no mood to worry about money. I don't anticipate and problem with the insurance company (NSI), but time will tell. If they have a problem with the bill I'll cancel the policy and find another company. That hospital is not on their direct payment list.

Did they confirm it was the appendix that was infected. My daughter had hers taken out and they said "oh sorry it wasn't that after all".

I agree with your girlfriend. Seems a lot when it's a minor operation (watched one yesterday on The Health Channel).I only paid 7000 baht for my sister-in-law's C Section and the baby is much bigger than your appendix :o

My step daughter had an appendix opp 6 years ago. Cost 5500 Baht. Cant see it going up in price by that much. Hope you recover soon.

  13. I would like to get good smoked mackeral and proper butchers sauasages - oh and decent sirloin steak.

    Hi Grant,

When you start to do all this remember to tell us all. What I would give now for a nice Lorne sausage and a good roll???????. If you come to Udon I'm sure you will make money.

  14. Hi,

Where and what is needed for a Thai to obtain an international driving licence ?

    Thanks

Last year I took my wife to lawyer to obtain an International Driving Licence. (Thinking the lawyer woud know how to get it) It was to cost 5000 Baht. This included the Lawyers fee. She went back two days after and was told she could not get one as she had ony past her test for a couple of month. Thai law apparently states that a Thai must hold a full driving licence for one year before they can obtain an International Licence. You will probably be able to get one in BKK for about 1500 Baht. However, if you look at the DVLC web page regard to visitors licences you will see that they can drive for up to one year in the UK with a Thai licence. I assume it will be similar in other countries.

  15. I am off to visa application centr in 2 weeks and am wanting to know does my g/f need her Return air ticket and Travel insurance to show with her application? I was going to wait until i had visa approved before buying air ticket and travel insurance for her.. Thanks if someone can shed some light about this..

Tinytot we booked a ticket and gave this as evidence but we didnt get any travel insurance. Just make sure if you pay for the ticket that it is open for changes for 12 months. Even better if you can transfer it to your name at a later date if everything falls thru. \

    Cossi

One of my friends recently took his G/F to Denmark. His consulate insisted she have medical insurance. Bupa Blue Cross does a holiday insurance for about 3500 Baht.

  16. I don't think with her level of education and the fact that she is poor she can understand about 'budgets' and 'investing'.

    This is utter rubbish.... :D

My wifes education was pretty crap, her childhood years were spent in poverty, I can't even imagine what it was like for her and her family.

My wife is fantastic with regards to looking after our money.. every single baht is accounted for, and to be truthful, without her budgetting and keeping a lid on things I would be lost... all that from someone with her level of education...

And her english... she managed to pretty much teach herself english, and now with a little help from me she speaks the language very well and gets better everyday, I am very proud of her.

Well sai. I'm of the same opinion as you. My wife and yours are very alike.

Just because someone comes from a background of poverty and did not have the same access to good education as you did, it does not make them unintelligent. In fact she's probably more intelligent than you.

Sorry if I sound a bit harsh ... but your comment above is just .. well... derogatory, not just to your GF but to many Thai's as well.

    totster :o
