  1. First check with your bank. Mine limits me to 600 usd per day...so it is impossible for me to withdraw more than 18000 (sometimes more or less). Well ..that is my problem. Four years ago, my other bank allowed me to draw more...and Bank of Bangkok allowed 25000 baht.

Going inside the bank and asking at the counter is of no help (in my case). Still limited to 600 USD.

However...good news. I use XE and can get 3000 USD, in baht. (more, if I want). I do that online and cost 21 USD. Effectively, less than going to an ATM several times, in order to accumulate that amount.

Cannot beat the system, but can get a better deal, by planning ahead. It takes 10 days to get money from XE.

  2. Though there's room for improvement, the US is doing pretty good:

    http://money.cnn.com/2014/11/07/news/economy/october-jobs-report-unemployment-fall/index.html

U.S. has added 2.3 million jobs this yearEmployers added 214,000 jobs in October, continuing a trend of strong job growth this year that is on track to be the best for America since 1999.

The unemployment rate fell to 5.8%, according the government report released Friday. The rate fell below 6% in September for the first time in six years.

Indeed, the US has gone from losing 400,000 jobs a month in Q4 of 2008 and the 1H 2009 to several dozen months of a consistent job creation. The job creation has been steady and its also been increasing.

The next president is going to have to start dealing with radical changes to the society and culture due to the structural changes of the new cyber economy. We no longer need "full employment" by traditional and customary standards. in the America that's already begun to take shape, full employment may mean 60% of the labor market works.

Eventually under the evolving cyber economy as few as 30% can do all the work, perhaps 40% -- it's just not that clear yet. Short of gassing 100 million fellow Americans one happens not to like, we're going to have to restructure and reorient our society and culture to comport to the new economic realities.

So you and I are basically on the same page as far as the unemployment data and realities are concerned...it certainly is positive and great to see that one-time 10% unemployment figure crash through the 6% floor.

    Still need burger flippers....

  3. First heard Dark Side of the Moon about 1972, at 17 years old as a young serviceman on the island of Crete.

Grew up fast there. Still have lasting effects from the Ouzo and the Hash they used to fly in from Ankara.

Had a bong right in my dormitory room....and bought my first stereo...a kenwood.

First album was "Darkside of the Moon". Burned candles on a Buddha statue and listened to the music with a friend from Arkansas...also a youngster.

Still have the Buddha statue (we hiked up to a remote village in the mountains and found it in an old market)

Would go to jail for that stuff nowadays.

  4. The air is cleaner, people nicer, and less crime. If you do not like bars...Pattaya is not the place to be....

22 Miles puts you half way to Nong Khai. You have a good selection of places to go.

I doubt you will miss the Pattaya beach very much. Udon has a few excellent shopping areas, a small "farang street": and an excellent immigration office, airport and train station.

Actually, with the convenience that Udon Airport offers, you can fly to Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Krabi whenever you like....with no hassle.

Direct debit processing fees are illegal in Canada, those costs must be included in the price of the ticket.

40 baht ??? are we losing sleep over 40 baht now? sounds like the poster who got overcharged 5 baht for a slice of pineapple at the market.

As far as Canada having different laws than Thailand...well... yeah. Same like you won't get a lot of chili in your curry in Canada as well.

  6. God Help America if this lady becomes president,

God and America have been ignoring each other, for the time being.... in case you have not noticed.

I see no reason for not electing this lady....if Obama can do it, why not a lady?

She is one up on Sarah Palin, if that helps. I actually think she could get something done.

We need to get all this out of the way. We had our Obama, next we need a lady. After that, perhaps somebody who is actually qualified will have a chance.

  7. We put up one of those flying lanterns. Are we now marked for death? About 500 more were sent up, on our street alone. I am willing to point fingers in return for a lighter sentence. However, many tourists were doing the same thing as well, with police watching.

Two and a half hours to drive 3 kilometers, in Chiang Mai (kept getting blocked, before I realized I could just go around the canal and end up in the south east corner. A car pulled out just near Loi Kroh, and we had a great parking spot. Trouble was, lanterns were too wet to go up. A few did.

We soon tired of the lanterns and fireworks, and found a cozy bar to drink some beer. My wife doesn't drink, so she got me home safely. The bar turned out to be good fun....more so than trying to heat up wet lanterns.

My wife wanted to do it again, tonight. I said no. Thank goodness for the rain.
