For an extension of stay based upon marriage there is no allowance for a parent to get an extension.
The police order only allows an extension for children. From clause 2.18 of the police order.
"(4) In the case of children, adopted children, or spouse's children, said children, adopted children, or spouse's children must not be married, must live with the alien as part of the family, and must not be over 20 years of age except in case of the person hereof is of illness or disability and cannot live without support of father or mother:"
For an extension based upon retirement and others under clause 2.20 of the police order that is for family member to get extensions it is allowed. "(5) In the case of parents, the father or mother must be 50 years of age or over."
I accept what you say.
However, a friend of mine piggybacks on her son: he was married to a Thai, has 2 adult kids.
At first both his parents piggybacked, now it is just his mother. She has been here for 12 years.
May be rules changed?

OP, can you afford health insurance ?
If not, don't even concider Thailand for a long term stay.
If yes, go for it.
May be Op can afford to pay his bills regardless? While medical service has become more pricey, it is not unaffordable.

Totally disagree - taxi drivers are mostly hard working members of society and provide a legal and reliable service at a very low cost to passenger. Have been using since 1969 and have only had a handful of negative experiences, non serious and non costing more than a normal tip in a western country.
Agree 100%

I came here in 2004. Intention was to stay for one year to see if retirement in Bangkok would be an option. My husband continued working in Cambodia. He retired in 2014, joined me in Bangkok. We have been considering to return to Europe, had a 6 month holiday in Austria last year, enjoyed the super summer, swimming in the lakes, food etc. Then autumn started and we were happy to fly out on 1 Nov.
It had become cold, grey sky, short days. We missed easy access to a gym, weather plus small conveniences like just hailing a taxi, frequent BTS if needed instead of waiting for a bus in the cold and rain. A big plus for Thailand is easy access to medical service instead of waiting weeks for an appointment.
Life here is easygoing, cheerful faces, helpful people, no aggression.
All adds to a pleasant life which keeps you young at heart and mind. If you can afford to stay, stay in Thailand.

See www.integrity-legal.com or search for many videos about expats insurance and other matters. Suggest you reconsider your relocating as the 500,000 baht per year won't get you here. Yes, if you were here you could 'exist' on your budget but without enough income to start with you may never be able to get a retirement visa. Suggest a couple of long term tourist visits to talk with local expats and get to up to date information first hand.
Op can apply for non-imm O multi entry and doesn't need 800.000 in a local bank. Only downside is that he needs to leave every 90 days.

500,000 Thb is not an awful lot to live in a city. Don't forget the money you require for ret. ext. to your visa is 800.000 Bht or 65,000/month.

Do you already know what is required for opening a business in general?
Will Thailand recognise your qualifications?
Who will be your clients?

SG will no longer accept nationals from Europe. Others? New rule since early this year. You need residence/work permit. May be some banks will but SG banks like DBS, UOB don't.

I would cancel my trip for now or just come for a holiday.
A reputable school gives you the docs to obtain a visa.

Really? Another denier? She gives us all hope. 'nuff said.
She enjoys publicity just like the attending politicians. If they were serious they would have travelled on commercial flights.
5 Germans travelled on 4 govt. flights. Merkel didn't even want her defence minister on the flight with her. This shows how serious they are about carbon footprints.

Yea, the law passed last year makes it unlawful for landlords to charge more than the electric company rate of 4.5 baht per unit ... I wonder if any comply?
My landlord gave me the bill every months and I went to pay it. He never overcharged. Not even before the law came into force.

Hardly, the worst nightmare is remaining in the EU whilst Germany sinks into recession, and the Italian banks collapse, and the British public are left having to pay for it like Germany did for Greece:
This statement comes from someone who is clueless.
British public to pay for collapsing Italian banks?
May be British bankers made bad investments. Who knows. Then go and complain to your bankers, not blame EU. And Germany never paid for Greece.
Do you know that Britain does not belong to Euro area. Therefore, they are not affected by bad Euro loans to defaulting countries.

The EU heirachy have never atrempted to negotiate reasonably, and as such the UK must make something happen themselves or be bound to a ghastly deal which actually would make them worse off in the medium and long term.
Leave won the referendum first up, and if a second referendum was held why should it hold more weight?
Trade aside i see few benefits of being in the EU
Doesn't Britain need the trade?
Doesn't Britain need the nurses/carers from EU countries?
Who will take care of your old folks in care homes when EU staff leaves on 31/10?
Many old folks voted out. Yet they may need the staff to push their wheelchairs and wipe their bums one day.

I agree this saga is a rather sad one from beginning to end.
Tiger breeding doesn't just happen in Asia but also smack in the middle of the EU. 2 cubs were rescued from a woman in Vienna. She was "fostering" them and kept them in a bath tub. Origin is a breeding station somewhere nr. Bratislava. Apparently, the animals are being bread for sale as pets.
I have not read about any action to close this centre.
Bad things don't just happen in Thailand.

Some have also done a statement that hey are retired at the embassy.
It think the consulates in Penang and Savannakhet have gotten a bit more flexible now for the proof of retirement.British Embassy doesn't provide any proof of retirement
That's correct. However, Brits get a letter from Work&Pensions every year about increase or no increase of pension. Germans send a similar letter. This is accepted as proof of retirement at the Thai consulate back home. Finance is another proof e.g. bank statement.

The EU would be well aware the current government is still the same old junta with the same old leader trying to disguise itself as a democracy.
One of the things the EU doesn't like about Thailand is it's human rights record. This story yesterday about human trafficking and unpaid wages won't help their cause.........nor should it.
Won't they ever learn.
EU also trades with China. Their biggest market. Never mind human rights. Thailand is chicken feed in comparison.

We could have remained in Thailand as had enough of an income however the decision to move back was mostly due to immigration attitude and uncertainty what tomorrow might bring (having 6 police vehicles turn up at my house full of police did not help). Last October I started comparing prices and found UK was far cheaper for us. I hated driving in Thailand and now am enjoying driving. The quality of the food is far better here and I do not need to worry about slowly being poisoned and I'm even eating fish here. Utility bills were worrying me but at the moment I'm only paying £50 a month. I don't drive a 3lt suv so my costs are half what I was paying. So happy to be home. Obviously we miss friends and the sun but we have had far more barbecues here than in Thai (dengue twice kind of makes you think twice). Love Thailand shame what they have done to her since 2006. We will go there for holidays only. Oh clothes are cheaper here than Thailand it's unbelievable.
Aren't you comparing apples and pears in your shopping list?
Why do you think fish is less toxic in UK? Most is farmed just the same and plastic particles in fish is worldwide?

No, he was in Dublin. And if you call Boris backroom plotting "democratic", look up the word.
In case you are not aware, the referendum outcome isn't a binding result. Only pea brains can't see the consequences of his plans. Why do you think Rees-Mogg moved his investment company to the EU? To make money from Brexit and to do business post Brexit.
