These visas, like all the others, were eventually going to be "tweaked."  It appears that time has come, and what you have been doing for 15 years may need adjusting.

The rules of this visa were adjusted bit by bit over the years. I need to  show verifiable proof that I have the required amount pref. above over min. 3 months, I need registered residence in the country of application or no visa. Approval by Royal Thai Embassy is required. In 2004 there was no requirement of any sort. It took 10 mins. to get the visa issued by an honorary consul.

"You have an EU passport.  Correct?  if so, you don't need PR for another EU country, you can reside there, even work there. "

Yes, I could work but at 70 nobody will employ me. And yes, I don't need PR. To have it is an advantage.

On the basis of free movement as a retiree I have NO rights but only obligations.

Re your comment that grass is greener outside Thailand: can you list advantage of Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines other than similar climate and no 90 day report? You may find that it is a "give & take".

I don't see why it is a problem to apply for non-imm O, ME if you find requirements for retirement ext. not affordable. Why is it less affordable than last year? Price hasn't changed.

I would say a lot of snowbirds will move to tourist visas now.

It's just not worth it for them to deposit 800k, or transfer 65k every month, when they only spend 4 to 5 months here a year.

Why not go for non-imm O multi entry? No need for 800.000 in a Thai bank. We just needed to show 200.000 ea. anywhere in the world.

Upon what basis was it issued for?

For marriage or being the parent of a Thai that would be an error since you are allowed to get a work permit and work with it.

Neither marriage nor mother of Thai child. I have no problem with not working. The OP doesn't say on what basis he is in Thailand. Obviously not on a basis to qualify for non-O allowing to work. Otherwise he would not have been denied

I wrote the address of the school I would be teaching at in Thailand. I didnt know employment was prohibited in Thailand with a non immigrant "O". I've been including the schools address I teach at in Thailand for 9 years now on the visa application and have never been questioned about it. No officers in the immigration office when reporting at the immigration office when I arrive in Thailand ever said anything either. I don't recall ever seeing any mention on the Thai Embassy site for the non immigrant "O" visa being prohibited from employment only tourist visas and retirement visas. When the Thai consulate told me I cant work in Thailand with a non immigrant "O" visa, it totally caught me off guard.

At least the Thai consulate sent back the money order with all my paperwork...

On my non-O it clearly states that employment is prohibited. Have a look.

Personally I blame the Americans- pop into the embassy - clutch the flag, hand on heart and declare your income was a million a month.

    No evidence required- just lies.

Eventually - some one caught up with that nonsense.

I have a very good friend who is now 96 - that’s a fair age - I see nothing but kindness, help and total respect from Thais - he is very frail these days .

Im not sure where the OP is considering relocating- if back to Europe- one really cold winter will be his last.

Not only the cold winter would make life difficult. The miserable, unhelpful people in European countries are worse. Once you are over 60 you are considered a nuisance.

I see what you are saying. In my case since I'm going to immediately start the Thai elite process, I think it's reasonable to burn one of these.

Since I now have an overstay stamp and a 'denied entry' stamp on whatever it is, I do have concerns I'll be able to get in via land border even. Is that concern warranted? I mean are the IOs at land borders just blindly stamping people through?

Alternatively I could be at the Thai embassy in ho chi Minh tomorrow morning when it opens. A bit concerned since I've gotten an SETV here before + the 2 new ugly stamps.

And Elite path may be blocked with your immigration history.

There seems to be quite a few of these onward ticket companies, having just done a quick search. Has anyone used them? Any feedback? I can’t see how they are legal. There is no intention of using the flight that is being presented in the application to the consulate. It’s a form of deception, isn’t it?

Wonder how long this route will work before the door gets closed?

He died in Klong Prem which is a lot, lot worse than IDC. There are no Thais in IDC, only foreigners.

It also says that he was severely weakened by a health regime he was following BEFORE he went to prison.

I have been in IDC and the food there is actually not bad. If you have cash, you can order food from outside. If you are sick, you get to see a doctor.

Comparing Klong Prem to IDC and comparing this man that died there to possibly dying of neglect in IDC is so obviously dishonest, it's laughable.

    Even Klong Prem improved since.

Thank you for sharing your infinite wisdom regarding the verification process to read monthly pension amounts being deposited into an American bank.  Maybe you would be better served sharing this vast knowledge with some of the more naive posters on this site.

Hopefully you are not employed with the American Embassy or Consulate.  If so, I see where the problem lays.

Of course Thai Immigration is not interested in how expats invest their money in their prospective countries.   I'm not interested in being part of their make money for Thai banks either.

I don't mean to hurt your feelings but I was actually hoping to receive a reply from the American Consulate clerk who views Thai Visa posts regarding this recent Thai Immigration visa debacle.  So far, they are pretending to turn a blind eye by not acknowledging a problem even exists. The expats leaving Thailand monthly suggests otherwise.

Some refer to those who are leaving Thailand as bad foreigners, which we all know is not true.  Thai Immigration came up with this term.  ????

Any figures about the monthly expat/retiree exodus?

Having to leave said funds on deposit for longer and no access to half of them, plus no ince.letters for those that have genuime income, thats whats harder for many

If you have income, bring the 65thou every months. No need for a letter from an embassy or for parking a lump sum. But of course in the past some embassies issued a letter in good faith and not on proof.
