  1. I do wonder what cover other young Brits who live long term in Thailand without working here have and how much it costs?

I wonder that because I should probably get it too...

Check BUPA. They allow payment per month and I pay like 5500 baht for 4 persons. No Claim, 10% off Every year.

And I went for one of the higher coverage packages..! The 5500 is our first year.

You can do everything by phone, fax, email if you want.

The coverage is worldwide except USA.

Checked out several, but within a day I had a lady from BUPA calling me after filling out the Internet info-request and she has been following through everything without a fuss. English communication was very good.

Stellar Customer Service...I mean considering Thailand....

    repatriation included?

  2. Of course Vietnamese women are probably more beautiful...

The most beautiful woman I ever saw in my life was an air hostess on Vietnam Airlines. The flight was over 20 years ago but her face is indelibly printed in my memory. Absolutely stunning.

Did you get a picture on yer smart phone ?

from 20 years ago, when there were no smartphones? Where are you from, outer space??

i'm not so sure, it seems he is a little quicker on the uptake than you are.

  3. These happened to one of my friend:

First, you say goodbye to your 40 k. You will never see it again.

Second you will wait for the court in koh samui sometime 2-3 weeks.

Third, you will spend entire day in koh samui prison.

Fourth, the judge will fine you around 3000 thb something.

Fifth, you will lose your work permit and they will stamp ' cannot enter thailand for one year' statement in to your passport.

Sixth, you are free to stay in Thailand until the end of your visa but if they cancel your permit means within a week you need to leave.

Sorry man. Try to find a good lawyer as they can let your work permit survive but you need to pay handsomely.

And no worries, you will not get a jail sentence still be nice in court and to policemen.

    Good luck man.

that may have happend to your friend, but it is by no means definitive, especially if the guy has local support

  4. safe, professional abortion in a real hospital with real support facilities has always been available in Thailand, you just have to have the money to pay for it. Usually about 20k to have the procedure performed by a real obstetrician.

In fact, some of the best ob gyn's in the country fund their charity work with the proceeds derived from these procedures for the well-off.

I suspect this will just be another alternative for the privileged -- a pill that seems a little less naughty than surgical intervention.

i highly doubt the welfare of women is being seriously considered here. Many of the doctors care, but the politicians are, well, politicians.

  5. you would be very lucky to find any service to take responsibility for an individual item when doing bulk laundry.

in using what is called a wash and fold service without pointing out the special handling instructions or paying for a premuim to handle delicate items most places here or even in the west would have told you to take a walk.

    here is a typical disclaimer:

In laundering we are not responsible for any item(s) as wash and fold is processed by weight and not by garment count, as such items are not inspected, therefore we will not be responsible for any claims, including shrinkage, discoloring, runs, rips, tears, or any other damage. This also includes any item claimed loss or missing.

    here is another:

  6. It's because most people in the world finds westerners complete lack of spirituality disturbing. Like we are living shallow lives, which we are in most cases. So what kind of atheist are you? The informed kind who understands what science can and can't explain or the one who sees atheism as an excuse for moral relativism/nihilism?

    why exclude agnostics?

edit: just rad further on, agnosticism most certainly was not excluded from the dicussion

  7. thanks for that, i am aware now. the bike i rode was left me by someone who had borrowed my truck for some errands, i rode it up the dirt track (hill) to my house. upon exiting to collect my truck, i encountered the idle stop for about 100 meters as i rode down the hill.

having only ridden and owned bike with clutches, i must admit the whole automatic thing leaves me cold.

if i were to rent or purchase another bike, it would most certainly not be automatic.

having owned numeorous dirt bikes back home, an NSR 250r, vfr 400r (NC30), gsxr 600 in thailand, i suppose old habits die hard

  8. very interesting as I have no UK family connections and a commonlaw Thai wife and two children here. I wrote her a letter giving her full authority to deal with any arrangements coupled with all assets. the British Embassy here and in many other countries have never been of any assistance and I refuse to be dictated to after my demise

If I understand it aright, your commonlaw wife is not officially your wife by Thai law. For her sake, if I were you, I would rectify this.

You may well feel that the Embassy is unhelpful, but you have no choice in the matter. They will get in on the act. And after your demise, you will not be able to do much about it.

Then I will have an affitdavit drawn up giving her full and total authority as my next of kin and therefore capable of looking after my two children who have my name on their birth certificates.

put her in your will as executer

    i suspect wordplay

  9. "KHAMPHAENG PHET – January 27, 2013 [PDN]; at 12 p.m., a report of a man being shot and injured "

"During questioning, Mr. Manoonsak said he had been sleeping in the bedroom on the third floor with his wife, whom he recently married. She was identified as Ms. Piyathida Singreuang, age 34, the owner of the restaurant downstairs".

Some questions of my learned friend m'lud.

    1. Where were these people when this incident happened? Kamphaeng Phet province or Nakhon Sawan province?

    2. Why were Mr Manoonsak and his wife in the sack at noon?

    3. Why wasn't she cooking food downstairs in her restaurant?

    Re your questions:-

    1. Why is it relevant?

    2. Why is it relevant?

    3. Why is it relevant?

or more to the point, if as the 'news' article states, the report was received at noon, how do you reckon they were still in bed at noon?

  10. Despite all of the TIT posts, I don't see why we should put up with obvious disrespect from people from whom we want to buy something. Any customer is entitled politeness and help and gratuitous bad remarks about someone whom they assume can't understand what they say just isn't acceptable. The shop, to say the least, doesn't deserve custom.

You need to think about the circumstances. Some of the skinny 40 degree drinkers at out soi shop decided that it was fun to call me fat. By comparison with them I am certainly well covered. Not wishing to start a village feud, I would just take my purchases and leave with no further conversation. Eventually they became bored with the game and gave up.

Out in the sticks here, despite there being plenty of foreigners, leery lads sometime like to say 'farang' as we pass by, not to us but about us and so that we can hear. When you look around, they are having a silly snigger at their cleverness. The appropriate response is 'Khun Lao'. Without fail, they will go very quiet, look at each other and grimace as they attempt to engage their brains to work out the implications of the response.

Again, you are trying to be smart, but your thai is wrong,

why would you want to call them Mr Lao, do you mean khon lao?

  11. I then repeat to her " Som Nom Nah" whilst holding the wife's hand so she knows we are somehow related?

"Your tits are well matched"????? ............ that would embarrass most girls, I'm sure.

I may have spelt it wrong but the literal translation as far as I am aware of what I wrote is " Sh!t happens", could be different tones.

    Cheers

Thought it meant what goes around comes around

more to the effect of serves you right, but it is a classic example of someone being offended (albeit justifiably in this instance, but no less accidentally) by something they did not understand correctly
