  1. As has been mentioned, $500/month means a very bare-bones lifestyle -- little or no money for alcohol, western food or socializing with the ladies. When foreigners try to live long-term on a food budget of 100 baht/day, they often end up with nutritional problems that can affect their health.

The OP doesn't mention his plans on how to handle health emergencies. Stuff happens and there's absolutely no room for saving for an emergency on a $500 per month budget. Hope the OP has a nest-egg of at least $2000 he can easily access for medical emergencies.

Well he could buy travel insurance for about £25 which is valid for one year!

    show me where?

in my experiencee 25 pound a yar travel insurance isnt good for much outside the EU

  2. in the 2 years i taught at a university in Bangkok (15 years ago) as a Canadian (west coast) i was the most sought after teacher due to the perceived neutrality of my accent.

this extended to the evening programs i taught 3 nights a week which were always full with repeat students, while other teachers were running at 50 percent or less.

Thankfully after an entertaining 2 years, i found an excellent job in my field and went back to the private sector.

I frequently encounter former students through work in some very good positions.

  3. my experience is as a parent whose child attended a small international kindergarten until grade 1 (age 6).

In meeting fellow parents (Aus, UK. USA, Canada) we were all blown away by what they had achieved most of our kids were reading independently by age 5 and placing very high when it came time to move on to grade 1. This was a common topic during birthday parties and school events when we found ourselves in one place.

So they may be a pain in the ass to work with, but the group i encountered were certainly conscientious and cared for their students. My kid absolutely adores thm, and asks if she can visit the school on her holidays and days off.

And you can rest assured that they aren't shitfaced all weekend.

before some here knock the impression folks here have of philpinos, perhaps its time to revisit the image of western teachers in thailand.

  4. Dreaming about what?

    Thanks.

getting by in Chiang Mai for 500 USD per month.

the internet is quite realistic, as i am assuming you require download speeds at that rate for large file transfers.

    I have 30mbps (docsis 30/3)

on multi-threaded or even multiple part downloads i achieve bursts to 55 mb/s using SmartFTP to a gigabit seedbox. generally speeds average around 3.5-4 MB/s.

you pay a prmium for the internet though and it is a crap shoot depending on whether or not your area is over subscribed.

  5. having just watched the video my impression is that it is homophobia pure and simple and has very little to do with Islam, though it may seem a convenient excuse

The perpetrators are clearly second generation at least, and despite the mention that "thiis is a muslim area" the video is more about harassment for harassment sake than it is about religion.

the guy speaking could be any chav with a video camera on his smart phone, just seems he is a muslim chav.

Last week Monday my thai gf and I went out for a drink and 2 days later we are sick as can be. Sore all over, swollen glans, stomach ache, can't eat much. Was wanting seeing if any other TV peeps are not felling well or is it a bug going around. Thanks

truly unfortunate. I hope both your and your 'girlfriends' glans recover soon.

  7. if you stand in one place and take five or 6 photos starting left to right (or vice versa) and stich in photoshop, you usually end up with a curv, the point of which is the center shot where you shot straight forward

the two panos of singapore in this post are prime examples. the more photos off of center the more pronounced the curve

  8. Spot the teachers....

    whistling.gif

    Drivel, dribble...does it really matter?

How many more dribbles do you need in your 6 days off?rolleyes.gif I know you posted earlier you wanted to match everyone

I am actually not a teacher

As to whether or not it matters, all depends, it is pretty difficult to sound superior to other posters when you do not even posses even a basic command of the language you are being a twunt in.

  9. if i were to ligthen up any more and take this forum less seriously, i would find myself in orbit with thaksin's sattetlites.

oddly, it would seem the UK has not managed to start a colony in space.

  10. I, too are sickened by the treatment this dog has received. it is cruelty in it's worst form.

I do not really know how to inquire about my next problem. My wife and I live in a nice little area, only 8 newish houses. Only 5 regularly occupied, the rest are investor properties. We are troubled by barking dogs. one of the 8 houses opposite our's has 5 dogs. Every time a person or another dog passes their property ,which has a large gate ,the dogs rush to the gate and all bark simultaneously. They cause the other two dogs to join in. The last few nights there is a band of soi dogs, maybe six or eight come around just after we have gone to bed. I am not sure if one of the 5 dogs is on use but all the soi dogs go barking madly and the others join in and then a fight is started between the soi dogs. Meanwhile one of the 5 dogs gets exited and beats up one of the other five digs. To cap this one of the houses opposite us ,the Thai lady has got a new boyfriend and he has brought along his three fighting cocks who wake me up at or before dawn. He keeps them in three type of baskets which upside down which are situated between their wall and the road, 25 metres from our house. We have approached the lady who has the 5 dogs with no avail. How do we combat this situation without moving house. I am not a cruel person towards animals but my patience is wearing thin as it has been going on three years now.

All suggestions will be will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Live with it or poisoned meat thrown over the wall at 3am.

You are suggesting that someone employ criminal behavior to solve this problem and, aside from the legal issue, poison tossed into someone's garden can easily find its way to an unintended target, including small children.

agreed, my toddler is constantly patrolling the yard in hope of finding discarded raw meat.
