  1. You are "farang" to them, that is, an object, rather than a human being. This is also why many Thais have very difficult to deal with the fact, that a white skin, a "farang", so totally different from a normal human being, can speak Thai.

In order for us to make ourself a little more human, less objectified, we should try to avoid calling ourselves "farang" all the time.

Does this apply the same way when farangs call say asians in their farang countries?

  2. To the OP why did she talk shyt about you for no reason? Did you do something to provoke such a response from her?

Nah, didn't do anything to provoke her, and as far as I can remember, have never seen her before in my life. I've only been living in this community for about a month. And there's nothing wrong with me. Early 30s, well dressed, clean shaven, don't have tattoos, bald head, wife beater, or even a gut. I'm pretty boring and average, actually.

She was just being young, stupid, and I'm guessing a little drunk, as they were starting some family feast / event. I don't particularly care about her actions, and have heard similar cracks from other young idiots before. For example, I've heard people make jokes because I bought a couple packs of mama noodles for dinner. Apparently since I have white skin, I'm supposed to have a personal chef who cooks me filet mignon every night, or something. No lazy dinner nights allowed for white people in Thailand!

The part that aggravated me was the fact the older folk there (I'm assuming her parents) didn't speak up. They put their eyes down, and hoped the situation would go away. It wasn't until I spoke up that they reprimanded her, and forced her to apologize. That's the part that got under my skin.

But I well, I'm sure I won't die due to it, and should continue to live another day.

Oh comeon their commentary wasn't insulting just that they were talking about you in a positive stereptypical manner.

  3. Yeah, there was a thread on here which linked to an article about a fella who waited outside the tailors and found out that a Thai guy does all the cutting and sewing for the Indians. He followed this guy, who rides a motorbike, to his home and ended a doing a deal with him where he got suits, etc for about a sixth of the price that the tailors sell them for.

If someone can find the thread please put up the link, I'd love to read it again.

do the indians sell them at cut throat prices?

I find it freaking stupid that somehow you have an ethnic group of ppl all doing the same job and are selling suits to ppl out on the streets.

  4. Primary court: 8 years

    Appeals court: 33 years

    Supreme court: 8 years

Welcome to the lottery of Thai "justice" !w00t.gif

Yeah man <deleted> is that BS.

Ok most ppl would appeal for a lighter sentence so she got her's lengthened but how did the supreme court actually come into the picture here?

Why would they over rule the ruling from the appeals court?

Shows how badly a reform of this system is needed. I mean honestly the prosecutor gets a guilty verdict if 8 years and an appeal increases it to 33?

    What an absolute f******g joke.

Does it happen in western countries? If you get your appeal declined do they make your original punishment worse as punishment for wasting the court's time?

In my country we used to have a judge like that he would simply lengthen the sentence if someone he didn't like appealed.

  5. On my wedding day at the Amphur I got 'All farangs are little dogs' when my wife was out of earshot. She got an answer about many Thai ladies resembling ghosts with their white skin crap (referring to her).

This very morning we visited a shop we had been buying seeds for a year now. A new girl there treated my wife as if she was a bar girl and asked impertinent questions. I didn't catch that part of the conversation but I did understand when she shouted to the sullen Chinese lady at the back 'you can keep your seeds, there's another shop down the road'. No reaction of course , why bother.

Who said that? Why would thai ladies gets insulted?

sullen chinese lady and a new girl?

How did you know the lady boss is a chinese and she hired a rude new girl?

  6. One day I was visiting two Thai friends. There was a knock on the door and another Thai man came in. He looked at my friends and asked in Thai language, “Who is the old farang? Is he rich?”

I responded, “Be careful what you say. The old farang can speak Thai.” He slapped a hand over his mouth and sat down at my friend’s computer. He did not apologise. Nor did my friends reprimand him.

    Are you old?

    Are you a farang?

Well he wasn't wrong technically and it's good he assumed you are rich. Imagine being an african you would be assumed to be poor.

  7. We in Austria also charge the Germans and Japanese double, triple than the locals.

If my parents ordering a schnaps (some high alcohol drink) they pay less than foreigner and the waiter takes the other bottle which is not watered down.

rip off here rip off there.....same same

Yes and wasn't it also an Austrian who through his sick discrimination caused the death of six million innocent people, there again history teaches us that some people will never learn.

Actually most ppl don't consider that guy austrian but german and all his deeds are attributed to the country of germany also many thais love wearing their uniforms as a fashion statement.

  8. My experience is completely different as my first language is Spanish, which I talk with my family and friends and is my main language of communication in Tucson Arizona, While conversing with my family and friends, I have had complete strangers tell me speak in English, and I tell them if I was talking to them I have the capability of speaking in English, if they want to know what I am talking about learn Spanish or shut up and get out of my face!

Here it is Thai, in Arizona it is Spanish and you always hear the story how you were in the grocery store checkout line and the people around you were talking about you in their language.

What is so important about you that people would waste their time commenting about you.

Stop being so paranoid, I had a Girl Friend in Fort Wayne Indiana, one day me and her son was in a bar drinking, he is Anglo. and he started talking all this gibberish and after a while he said look at all these dumb b*****d they do not know what we are talking about, I did not know what we were talking about, he was playing on those paranoid people that would think we were talking about them.

    Cheers:wai2.gif

ah spanish and english of course ignoring the fact that many states in the southern usa used to belong to mexico and that the ppl that reside there used to have mexican ancestors.

I wonder if it's the same thing with the french canadian places. Do the english speaking ppl tell the french speaking ones to speak english.

  9. Low capacity paired with high demand and you get high prices. Low demand, with high capacity and you get reduce fares in an attempt to fill empty seats.coffee1.gif

Still doesn't make sense let's just leave the fact that 2 are budget airlines and one is a normal airline and just follow your logic for a while. There are x number of ppl that want to fly to chiang rai and back to bkk and vice versa. Suffice to say these ppl would most likely just choose any airline they wanted cos the flights are short unless more ppl actually want to fly via thai airways vs the other 2 airlines.

  10. Not only a convicted drug dealer, but there is also video evidence that this woman couldn`t sing either.

She obviously became involved with the wrong crowd. Get involved with losers, become a loser yourself.

Whatever hopes she had of establishing her career as a singer, perhaps even a TV star, have now been dashed. Her reputation and credibility are tarnished. She had her chances and claim to fame and will now be remembered as a drug dealer and criminal rather than a pop star. She will never rise to fame again, sorry to say; she is a has been.

That song handkerchief is a rendition of a famous chinese song best rendition was probably by teresa teng

  11. it's too tempting. Not to me.I would rather stay poor and free than gamble on getting big money with the risk of losing my freedom.

Not to mention thhe morality of selling drugs. I would rather remain poor and free rather than sell poison that destroys the lives of other.

So the owners of pubs are all bad as well... don't forget alcohol if classed right is a hard drug. Only difference is its legal. I know of plenty of people who took xtc or weed and led a perfectly normal life had a job and so on. Its only a small portion that goes down and becomes a real addict. Kinda like alcohol not everyone becomes an alcoholic.

Alcohol is legal - end of story. Some drugs which happen to be legal in your home country are illegal in Thailand and most other countries too. Break the law, pay the penalty.

These were Yaba tablets. Do you consider Yaba to be the same as "weed"?

The answer doesn't change the fact that both are illegal in Thailand.

I was talking about the morality not the law. Break the law here face the consequences.

No yaba is not the same as weed its more like xtc. My point was more that there are many drug users that are not addicts or damaged anymore then people drinking alcohol. People don't seem to understand that alcohol is as dangerous a drug but legal.

    Who even cares about this?

Alcohol is perfectly legal and yes it might cause more harm from alcoholic addiction and drunk ppl are more dangerous yada yada not important.

  13. Always funny to see those indian tailors at khao san rd or other tourist attractions only specifically call out farangs to offer them a nice new suit. You know you're walking in your shorts and T shirt at khao san rd and all of a sudden hey you think i need a brand new suit who even cares about the brand name like armani. clap2.gif

  14. If it is a Thai Indian family (Singh/Sikh) it is settled between families. The bond is more important then the dowry. Two families join together.

A farang has virtual no chance of getting married to those kind of Thai Indian families because those Indian families are loaded with billions of Baht and we really don't fit in their portfolio with our pensions, how to survive on 100K a month. cheesy.gif

billions? whistling.gif I am sure it's from them harrassing farang for tailored suits.

  15. So much for western expats bringing too much money into Thailand, here the OP wants to pay 20 baht.

I bet you can't speak a word of Thai, and you want to pay Thai rates.

Many of the Asian horde that have invaded the UK are not too clever in grasping the essentials of the English language yet the UK Government shovels heaps of money in their direction.

I cannot see any correlation between language ability and fair play.

Why do you even care about what the UK does and compare it to thailand?

It's obvious that different countries have different ways of handling things and you cannot blame the thais or any other country if the UK or other western european countries somehow don't discriminate foreigners or immigrants.

  16. We in Austria also charge the Germans and Japanese double, triple than the locals.

Btw i am curious how do the austrians differentiate germans? I can understand how they can tell the japanese apart but aren't austrians and germans rather similar?

I also wonder if they have japanese ppl complaining like the farang in forums like this on discrmination.

I would fanthom the japanese ppl just accepted it and didn't make a fuss out of it.

  17. It is the same in Indonesia.

I used to have a beer with this old english guy who still had a colonialist type mentality.

It was amusing listening to the staff talk <deleted> to and about him and he thinking they were singing his praises.

In a bizare twist this guy started "dating" one of the bar staff, he decided he needed a driver and she offered up one of her female friends.

The female friend was the bar girls lesbian live in lover. So the two lesbians got to go everywhere together on his dime and with this guy being none the wiser. Sorry, off topic.

    So u do understand indonesian.
