  1. Why do you restrict your thinking to teaching as being the only thing you can do ? - you are probably capable of doing better paid jobs here in LOS which would certainly expand your options.

Open your mind to the big wide world that exists outside of schools and education before you make a decision.

  2. Tough call - at 12 and 13 you might still have a chance to save them as long as your wife doesn't spoil them but it is a slim one.

You can try the ingratiating methodology I suppose but it looks as if that might make things worse - put them in a temple for the duration , that might at least teach them some respect and introspection.

  3. The concept of 'we did worse when we were young' does not justify something that quite clearly presented the risk of injury to uninvolved persons doing their shopping.

It was a stupid thing to do but it reflects an attitude that is of far more concern than the actual act.

The so called 'dek waen' individual knew that nobody would either try to stop him or catch him - this is not rebellion or demonstration but just complete contempt for society , its laws, and it's so called protectors, the police.

I have been an outlaw biker for years and in many countries and broken many laws however we were always intelligent enough to understand the risks and the potential consequences and most of the activities excluded members of the general public.

We knew the laws we were breaking and respected the people who would try to stop us - that's why we thought long and hard before we did anything - this guy didn't think at all.

This little <deleted> didn't need to think because he already knew he would not get caught and that is a sad reflection on the society here in LOS.

Fat friend - dek waen are just boy racers with rich Mums and Dads , not motor cycle gangs.

  4. Congrats and well done.

You are about to experience the biggest cultural difference that I have come across in LOS and, sorry to say, you will not win.

It really shouldn't be a battle as long as you just accept that however much you discuss it, however much your good lady says she is listening to your point of view, the baby will end upon your room, and probably for at least the first year.

Like most Westerners , I was against it, but after 2, I have come to the conclusion that it really is of little or no importance where babies sleep as long as they are safe ( they sleep through nocturnal olympics , don't worry about that ), as long as they are loved and as long as they have security.

Just ensure that your wife is happy , you're happy and that your child gets the love and security it needs and let the rest work itself out and good luck to all three of you. Be happy..

  5. <script type='text/javascript'>window.mod_pagespeed_start = Number(new Date());</script>

Dress properly and groom yourself properly AT ALL TIMES and you will never be seen as "past it."
Thai women of all ages and classes and for widely varying reasons have a weakness for the, um, "sharp-dressed man"
Do that . . . . DRESS WELL at all times.
    Laundered shirts
    Tailored pants
    Fashionable watch
    Good belt
Hi-end shoes, socks, eyeglass frames, sunglasses
    Good haircut
SHAVE every day with good products
    Take care of your teeth.
    Floss, brush, maintain.
Carry a toothbrush, comb and some deodorant in your neat fashionable computer bag.
If you sweat, carry a small white towel.
    Keep your shoes shined.
    Get a regular hair trimming
Respect yourself and dress like you do
Above all don't believe for one minute that your "inner Hi-So" shines through that pair of cargo shorts, singlet and Tevas you wear because you find it comfortable to dress like a child in this hot weather.

Dress like you respect those around you.

Try it. Next time you step into an elevator full of office gals you just might get a few checking you out.

And after ten minutes outside you will look like a sweat drenched bag of sh**e - nice in theory and possibly has some truth but very difficult in reality unless you exist in an air conditioned environment - you also would look pretty daft on a motor bike wearing all that clobber.

It gives us all something to aspire to....

  6. I do not think that burning bridges is a very apt phrase - it's a bit like the half empty half full glass question - it's more a question of whether or not you are fully committed to your new environment - that's the half full glass .

Personally, I never had any doubts when I came to LOS and after some 30 years still do not doubt that I made the right decision - regardless of some of the difficulties I have encountered , the plus side far outweighs any negativity , so to answer the OP.

No, I did not burn my bridges because there weren't any but I did come with a determination to make it work and a total commitment to making a new life - my glass is now overflowing........

  7. Until proper garbage management principals are taught from Primary school up, it is unlikely to change.

As with most things , education is a large part of the key....

Plastic Bags can easily be done away with in less than 3 months throughout the nation - Rwanda did it !

They just banned them and replaced them with paper ones, even exchanging visitors duty free shop plastic bags on arrival at the airport in Kigali.

Mind you they still sponsor cross border terrorism and state sponsored torture so probably not the best example , but they did get rid of plastic bag.....

  8. Where I go it is only 2 days with very little outside of that period - first day seems to be more orientated for the children with magic street shows and children's parties.

Second day kicks off around 10 and there is a parade in the afternoon - loads of water, ice, powder etc - terrific fun and done and dusted by about 7pm - it is a terrific 2 days.

The only problem is then going home, sitting in the garden with a cold beer and listening to the ambulances for the rest of the night.

The best place for Songkran is entirely dependant on what you are looking for - if you want full on , Pattaya has to be the place - I lived there for 9 years and it got a bit tedious but if you are a first timer, it is hedonistic and fun.

Farangs who do not enjoy Songkran should really think about leaving - it is one of the defining events of life in Thailand.
