  1. Many moved to Cambodia, including 3 of my old friends. It's cheaper there than Thailand, which ain't as cheap as it used to be. I first visited Thailand in 1985, and lived there from 1998-2018. Also in the last 10+ years Thailand has started tightening-up their visa rules. up until around 2010 it was very lax in that regard, an old American friend had a passport that was almost half-full of overstay stamps!☺️
  2. Robinson Crusoe was based on a real-life man called Alexander Selkirk, who was Scottish.
  3. Some rules only apply to certain countries it would seem. This contravened The Vienna Convention.
  4. "...You wouldn’t see this kind of thing in Geneva or Monte Carlo". You don't see 30C winter weather in those places either!😊
  5. They wanted to put up my rent in the UK by 30% last year.
  6. I've long thought of Israel as being like an overseas territory of the USA, almost like a colony. Also, who ever thought that establishing what is basically a European country in the middle east was going to work out well?
  7. Just when I thought that our German-speaking cousins were about to take our 'crown'...?😊
  8. It used to be someone that you had known for 2 years, and that they were of some 'standing', like a judge or a doctor or JP.
  9. This would mean European powers committing to the defence of countries 6,000 miles away.
  10. They also moved The Dubliner, but it just wasn't the same as the original.
  11. Castrate and muzzle the owner, and put the dog in prison!😊
  12. ...and there was me thinking that it was only Brits who do such things!😊
  13. There was virtually no queueing, and I had absolutely nothing else to do. So why not spend 30-60 minutes, my time wasn't valuable in any way at all, I had nothing whatsoever to do all day other than sit around and BS with friends. It also meant that I got a bit of exercise walking to the bank and back. I've known of guys walking quite a way to a different exchange bureau to probably save 30 Baht.
  14. When I used to buy expensive air tickets I would sometimes go to the bank to get the cash and save the 2,000 - 3,000'ish Baht card fee.
  15. In Thailand it's possible for a vendor to charge you 2 or 3% for using plastic, in the UK they're not allowed to do that, AFAIK.
  16. It was as long ago as the 1980's in the UK that people could no longer insist on the right to be paid their wages in cash.
  17. I was last there 20+ years ago, I've long since stopped visiting the Plaza, just drinking in Soi Nana, Stumble Inn etc.
  18. OK yes, I'm just mentioning how it is in the UK now. Pretty much EVERYWHERE now has the card reader machines. I do still keep some coins for a few things like parking ticket machines (in the glovebox) and where I used to live, the washing machine. Other than that, it's 100% plastic. (I even pay the bus fare with plastic!).
  19. They used to do nice ribs in the Woodstock Bar.
