So pay for your big purchases like school fees by direct transfer. Pay by credit card wherever you can, like Revolut. Send your day to day living expenses to the gf. It won't be possible for Thailand to demand 800k in the bank and then take 20%. There'll be a lot more discussion before any of this actually happens.
For 3 or 4 years in the late 90's/early 2,000's I survived by just using my UK-based Abbey National or HSBC account in Thailand, and it wasn't a very big problem.

Yes, indeed. They actually (still) like White foreigners. The only thing what pisses me of majorly is the lack of good sea view property even though the PH shouldn't be lacking. Except for that, it's a dream. I don't know why people still want to be treated like <deleted> in Thailand and basically beg to stay there.
The Phils isn't famous for it's food, also I get the impression that it's not as safe as Thailand.

Srettha is looking to ' normalize ' ties with Saudi Arabia , he wants their tourist's money ...
He should charge the 3 tuk tuk drivers with " tarnishing the reputation " of Thailand .
Life in prison ...?
When I worked in Saudi (2005) one of my Saudi colleagues got into trouble there when a Thai immigration stamp was found in his passport (by Saudi Immigration). He said that they were only supposed to visit Thailand if they had a business visa, they weren't supposed to visit Thailand as tourists (at that time). He got off with a slap on the wrist due to the fact that he had 'friends in high places'.

We've all long been aware that (real) prison is only for the poor in Thailand.

You might try Melatonin - If you haven't already.
It works well for us with no side effects or hangover the next day.
Zero buzz, but a a good nights sleep.
Thanks, but the Dr put me on that for a month and it had pretty much no effect. Anyway, I have a date with 'Mary Jane' this weekend.

Very soon I'm going to be eating cannabis in an attempt to cure my insomnia (I won't be smoking it because I gave up smoking 3 years ago). Why am I "self-medicating"? My doctor in the UK had put me on Zopiclone (sleeping tablets), but I could only have them for 3 months in case I became addicted to them. On the few occasions in my life that I did try weed, I noticed it's narcotic effect, made me very sleepy.

Hotels often have a business card with their details (in English, and the local language on the reverse) on the reception counter, if I was in an unfamiliar place I would put one in my pocket for just such occasions.

Again - any argument used to justify the criminalization of marijuana can also be used to justify the criminalization of alcohol. So I find the anti-ganja temperance union who bash recreational marijuana on one hand while downing whiskey in the other.
The hypocrisy is astounding. If you want to see the type of power freaks you are dealing with, look no further than Orwell and Huxley. In Orwell's 1984 the plods were rationed a small amount of alcohol to keep them compliant; and Huxley's Brave New World everyone was offered "Soma" which were numerous classes of drugs to take the plods drudgery away when they were not working.
Obviously, we have Orwell's brand of power-freaks seeking to recriminalize marijuana.
If they are going to do that, criminalize alcohol too. Pathetic.I don't know about alcohol, but if tobacco had only just become a thing today, or in recent times, it couldn't be sold legally (when it's so well known how harmful it is).

It is ILLEGAL for under eighteenyear olds to buy alcohol and tobacco. Why is it so difficult to enforce this law for cannabis so adults can make their own mind up?
The legal age to buy/drink alcohol in Thailand is 20.

We all know that 2023 minus 1998 is 25! But is 100 satang = 1 Baht? 555
My mistake I meant to say 10 satang/km????

One of the things at the root of this problem is that taxi fares are too low on the meter, I started living in Bangkok in 1998 (that's now 25 years ago!) and the 'flag'fall' on the meter was 35 Baht, and I believe it's still 35 Baht. IMHO that should now be 55-60 Baht. (I think they might have raised the fare 100 satang/km).
It's an example of how Thai people are exploited money-wise, again, IMHO.- 1

I would have thought that it will b difficult to tax anyone who is not given some from of residency status. if all the retirees and other log term visitors are driven away, Gov will need to collect a lot of tax revenue to make up.
In my 20 years in Thailand I had some wealthy/very wealthy farang expat friends. One thing being was that the bulk of their money was held 'offshore' from Thailand, in places like Switzerland and Singapore. For some I don't think Thailand is perceived as a safe enough place to hold large sums of money/assets, and not just for tax reasons.

Thai airways will go bankruptcy again. They have higher prices than let's say Qatar Airwats, Emirates and Etihad. However, their service and quality isn't even close to half. This is why most people doesn't want to pay overpriced for less. And Thai Airways are managed by Thais, so no wonder it goes bad. Thai business is never successful in the long run, since Thais only see fast money now.
Thai would've gone bust 20 years ago if they weren't government-backed.

If we look at how much they charge per KG for excess baggage it would cost some people a lot of money if they did a similar thing with passengers. I have an old friend who's a frequent flyer who would weigh around 140 KG! (And he's only about 5 foot 9!).

I'm looking at a flight London - Bangkok rtn in February '24. The last time I looked Thai Airways were wanting about £200 more than Eva Air (Taiwanese) for the same direct flight, and Eva are probably a nicer airline.

My woman tells me the trick is to avoid Koi Pla made with raw fish. She says many know that, and follow that rule. Any time raw fish is left to the elements, there is a danger. If it is kept refrigerated, the chances of sickness are much lower. Same applies to meat.
That would apply to any meat. Part of why I never ate meat-based street food in Thailand (or anywhere). We don't know if the meat has been refrigerated in the hot weather.

Was talking to an old Royal Navy friend many years ago about the Thai submarine saga (debacle????).
1. The South China Sea isn't deep enough for sub operations.
2. Thailand doesn't really have any external threats.- 1

Some years ago an Australian friend , Mark, had been working in Thailand for a Japanese oil & gas company. He said that the company was pulling out of Thailand. One of the main reasons was that when they had to deal with government agencies they had to deal with military men, who didn't have the faintest idea what they themselves, or the company was doing. (This was a company that was investing 10's or 100's of millions in Thailand).

To be honest with you, I'm not a very 'foodie' person anyway. Over the 20 years that I lived in Thailand I hardly ever ate Thai food. But for some people food would be a bigger consideration.
