First I dont complain over prices, not yet. The day the total cost of living in Thailand get more expensive than where I come from I'm gone of principle. I as many others on this forum come from high cost countries. However cost are in many of this countries a end results of high opportunities for everyone, good health care, good safety standards, good environment and air quality, high level of human rights and governments which are there for the country and not only for their own individual gains. Quality cost, copies should not.

Now back to Starbucks, I think it was around the year 2000 they opened their first restaurant on the famous beach here in South and as coming from one of the world's most coffee drinking nations, I definitely want to try this coffee from the US. Never before been more disappointed and the best I can say is badly boiled soil water.????

Agreed. Bilge Water. The last time I ever got a coffee from SB was when I ordered a hot black coffee and they poured it out of an urn. Never again. Yech

I don't understand ... 5 years of 'Family Resort' messaging & efforts and now bar's and nightlife not up?

Why? Isn't this inline with the message/plan? This should be positive to all and a mission accomplished

The only thing still missing is the demolishing of the right side of Walking Street, as there were talks about just 3 years back.

    3 years? Try 20 years+

I have the TE Lifetime Visa which I purchased about 20 yrs ago.  This was the only option with TE back then (1M BHT).

While back then Taksin Era, they almost went out of business several times, they ALWAYS HONORED my Visa.  I'm on my 4th 5 year Visa.  They amended several perks, which I don't care, as my goal was to find a streamline, hassle free (minimum contact with immigration)

way to live peacefully in Thailand.

From experience, you will have ZERO issues with the Visa.

I can also sell my visa to another expat which they can use for life.

I think you should live here (anywhere) continuously for 12 months prior to any commitments.

There are a lot of frustrated, malcontents, on this forum.  You should decide if this is really where to want to live...

I may be wrong, but I believe that once you sell it, it is then only good for another 30 years, not life. I was talking to a Korean fellow who had one for sale and that is what he told me.

If you are in a hurry or need assistance getting a police clearance you can go here: http://www.pcscenter.sb.police.go.th/eng/

Go to the middle of the page on the left hand side and click on: "Service to obtain certificate in case of special urgency by out source." This will link you to A-Plus Service & Consulting. They will do everything for you and usually get the clearance back in about 4 working days. For a fee of ~4400 baht. I have used them and recommend them if you are in a hurry or can't be bothered doing it by yourself

Normal Thai health and safety issue. never use fairground rides here, water attractions, parascending, zip wires, white water rafting, parachuting,  bungy jumping, private flying.  The Thais have not got the first idea of how to maintain anything to any great degree.  They can't even service cars to western standard, never mind dangerous activities equipment. Forgot to add water parks to the list.

I take issue with the service cars bit. The major dealerships service ares are generally spotless, well organized and take care of any issues professionally. I have also had good service and results at independent garages. I agree that in general the locals do not regard maintenance as an important factor in life.

No im saying most people had to get a 1 year (or maybe it was 2 years, its been a while) and then they could get the 5 year (Non-O Visa)

I dunno but I would just walk in and ask for a 5 year without telling them the specifics of your visa. Give them the docs they ask for and don't give any more information than they ask for.

Agreed, it is definitely worth a try and is what I plan to do next year.

Man Im sure you already know this but Thais often don't know what they are talking about. I find it hard to believe that you can get a visa that allows continual stay for years at a time and not be eligible for a drivers license.

But whatever, you don't want one - take the bus.

No, you can get a Thai Drivers License with this visa, just not a 5 year one.

The TE staff are wrong. It is a Privilege  Entry Visa issued under section 17 of the immigration act. It does not fall under Tourist Visa rules. That’s deliberate because tourism is limited — by law — to 90 days after which you must leave. You can stay in the country for 5+ years — without leaving — using the PE visa.

It is closer to a Non Imm visa than a Tourist visa; although it is neither.

From Thai Privilege Elite Website. I rest my case.

For the 16 years since it started there have only been improvements as to what is available.

There are still people that got the original lifetime membership are still using but it is only for 90 day entries. They were offered a new 20 year deal that allowed one year entries and 5 year visas but some chose not to take it.

Ubon Joe; I thought they were offered 30 years? I had a Korean fellow trying to sell me one and he said it was good for 30 years.

It’s not a tourist visa and you don’t have to out/in once a year. You can apply for a 1 year extension of stay every year from immigration for 1,900 baht.

Sorry to disagree with you but it is certainly a Tourist Visa. Privilege Elite personnel will tell you that. That is why with an Elite Visa, you cannot get a 5 year driving license, etc. I call it a Glorified Tourist Visa. It does not have some of the benefits of a Non-Immigrant Visa.
