  1. Not that I am any kind of an expert, or even a mediocre speaker of Thai, I am surprised that no one has stated the glaringly obvious:

    1. krap, however you chose to spell or phoneticise it, is a very impolite word in English, and causes huge mental hang-ups,

    2. For that very reason many farang, myself included, choose to say "kap", which seems to be perfectly acceptable to the Thai, and I believe is regionally correct,

    3. The use of Ka or Krap is frequently a marker for the .sexual orientation of the speaker.

    I have no doubt those better informed will correct me.............

    I just renewed my retirement visa at a cost of 14,500 baht. I dropped my passport in to a shop with two photos and got my passport with visa back two days later.

    Why I would be possessed to spend utterly stupid money to save me ten minutes every year is beyond me.

    I'm pretty sure the 5,10,20 year folks still have to do a 90 day report.

    The cost of a retirement visa renewal is 1,900 baht. Why did YOU pay utterly stupid money?

  3. This may be a silly question, but if it is illegal to ride on the bench seat of a pickup, why is it there? It takes up a lot of useful room, and is easily damaged by goods placed on it. A useable load tray with tie-down points would be safer and cheaper to manufacture!

    Conversely, if it is not illegal per se, but only because of the lack of seat belts, what apart from cost is the problem with fitting them?

    i understand there may be problems with vehicle tax and registration, insurance etc., surely these can be fixed by a mountain of paperwork and a few(or a lot?) of baht.

    No, it was caused by a culture of arrogance, violence, intolerance and a sense of impunity from the consequences of such actions.

    Which is inculcated at home and at school, and in the temples, from the moment of birth. There is no quick fix, and probably no slow one either. Same as fundamentalist so called religious cultures.

  5. I have a mental list of people, those that surprise me they have not been quietly shot for any one of various reasons. I will not name them all, suffice it to say that at least two US presidents, Mugabe, Thaksin, Dhamachaya, and this guy are on the list.

    I do understand that many of these people live in fear of their lives and are well protected. This one seems to me to be an easy target! Where are the avenging family members and colleagues?

  6. I find it amazing the number of suspected criminals who voluntarily turn themselves in to the RTP, and who respond to "invitations" to present themselves for arrest and/or interrogation. Where I come from, Mr. Plod comes and takes you away, voluntarily or otherwise!

    If I were a murderer, or accessory, I would be running as fast as I could, hiding, or changing my identity.

    Equally amazing is the response to the odd one who fails to appear ... Whole regiments of police and army cannot prevail...........

    BTW I have a criminal record, for parking on a double yellow line in the UK - arrested, taken to the cop shop, cooled heels for a couple of hours, then interviewed, charged and prosecuted! Pled guilty by letter, fined £5, no points on the licence but saddled with the criminal record, now purged. All very friendly.  A friend, sadly now deceased, had one for riding a bicycle on a pedestrian footbridge. Both are considered criminal offenses in the UK, not traffic offenses! But maybe they just wanted tea money.......

    Here it seems murder and manslaughter are lesser offenses than riding a motorbike without a helmet! All to do with the cashflow, I suppose.

    Could it be that they are, mostly, just stupid. It's a viable hypothesis.

    Yes but...............They are not born stupid, their children are born with all the natural curiosity and intelligence of any other human bean. Their parents, however, are products of the same brain removal process the children are about to undergo, and treat them as little gods, with no discipline and no moral values. They then go to "school" where the are bludgeoned into not thinking, not questioning, and not analysing anything. They go in with no "normal" ( by farang standard) upbringing, and come out zombies.

    The lucky??  ones who are educated in international schools or abroad, end up unable to survive here - they are shunned by the indigenous because they are too clever. So, they end up married to farang and living abroad, or leading expat lives here and supporting the brain dead family.

    So sorry, actually you are correct- they are mostly just stupid...and lazy and amoral. But, they were not born that way.......that is how they have been deliberately programmed. This is not a situation that can be remedied in a week, a year, or even a century, and certainly not by any administration who regards them as human beans, not human beings!

  8. On Monday, my wife and I went shopping as usual, including Villa at The Avenues. All was normal, the Outlet Mall was functioning, apparently as normal. Today, the Outlet Mall is gone! Two floors of it, windows, lights, stock, fixtures and fittings all stripped out and gone! - leaving yet again two empt floors of retail space, not that they were needed!

    does anyone know what happened?

    The visa was then confirmed to be counterfeit after it was checked using a visa detection machine. - What is a visa detection machine? Does it have flashing lights and make beeping sounds?

    No, they make a mastercard detection version too. It's called a Thai Bar Girl. Flashing and beeping sounds are optional (paid for) accessories!

    Yuk!!!!!

    When still living in Scotland, we had a French family visit. We went for a visit to a local castle, in two cars, them following. I passed a squashed pheasant on the road, so what? Looked in the mirror, no Froggies behind! Waited down the road for them, they caught up, we visited the castle. When we got home, great excitement, "look what we got for you! " One dead pheasant in the passenger footwell. ."where shall we put it?" I indicated the rubbish bin. No way was wifey, or I, about to pluck, clean and prepare a week old pheasant squash, never mind ear it! They were mega-offended!

  11. There are some sad truths here:-

    There are those who love elephants, and will say, do and approve anything to keep the species going;

    There are those who love elephants, and will condemn anything that suggests exploitation or abuse;

    There are those who give not a flying <deleted> for elephants, or any other living thing except themselves;

    There are a very few who hate elephants and want to see them extinct.

    None of the above will ever agree about anything to do with elephants.

    Really, we should learn from the elephants, who probably have similar views about humanity, but refrain from slaughtering us, or themselves.
