  1. Use Hull, send by special delivery and include one of those see through prepaid and addressed envelopes for the return of your passport, send monday they receive nad send back to you Tuesday, you receive Wednesday, but must be signed for. it was about £90.00 plus the cost of the two special delivery envelopes, prices may of gone up. just looked on the web site - http://www.thaiconsul-uk.com/downloads-and-visas.aspx but was unable to download the pdf files for some reason. have used them before both by mail and personal visit which is £10.00 extra but an appointment must be made. all the best

  2. to watch all avi formats on a computer use VLC player it free and will play everything you throw at it, no codecs required. lastest version is here - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html. Regarding playing on your tv, it will be the way the avi was encoded, you can re-encode or connect your computer to the tv and watch as a second monitor if it is a lcd tv use a vga connector or if its a an old tv without a vga socket use a s'video cable. see this goggle page here - http://www.google.co.th/search?q=s+video&a...lient=firefox-a

  3. My opinion is, that has nothing to do with the Thai baht, but piss poor money management throughout their lives. Really, if people can't afford to survive in Thailand because the baht went up a couple points, how do they ever expect to survive in England?

I don't mind if the baht goes up a bit here and there, because regardless, living in Khon Kaen is a WHOLE lot cheaper than living in downtown Vancouver. Although I will admit, Thailand isn't some cheap paradise to live in, like many people seem to think. It still costs a decent penny to live a good standard of living.

easy to live in the Uk on a lesser amount because, 1, the pension would not be frozen (that could be a large increase for a long term retiree)

2, pension credits would boast pension

3, help would be on hand with council tax etc.

    4, free medicine

Also some people have lost there lively hoods in this crash, so nothing to do with piss poor money management. in 2005 it was about 70baht/1 gbp with petrol at 18baht a litre, making a litre 25pence. now its 47baht/1 gbp with petrol at 36baht litre making the same litre about 75pence. I wouldn't call that the baht going up a few points. i would call that going up a lot (200%). So before you make a wide reaching comment of piss poor money management think!!!

  4. Hard drives come mainly in two sizes

2.5inch as used in laptops, with a maximum size of 1tb or 1000gb, when used as an external they do not require any external power source, they are smalll light and very portable a good make is maxtor or western digital.

The other size is 3.5inch as used in desktop computers, they range in size from 80gb to 2tb (2000gb) when used as an external they require a power supply, a good brand is samsung story which have a build in adjustable fan, or again western digital.

Hard drives are fairly unreliable over a period of time and do fail, i would recommend to buy from a good shop even if a little more and get as long a warranty as you can 3 or even 5 years.

Another option is to buy an internal 3.5inch hard drive with a 5 year warranty such as seagate, and buy a docking station, by using this the hard drive is open to the air and will run cooler, also you could buy more than one hard drive if required and swop in the docking station. see here ( http://www.thinkcomputers.org/old/index.ph...ews&id=710)

Another point to look for would be the type of connection required, FIRWIRE- not used a lot - USB - avaiulable on all computers or ESATA, faster than usb (at the moment) but not available on all computers

  5. I think the poster makes it clear in his text that he is in England or going by his personal details in fact wales, and his wife is applying for a settlement visa to UK.

Pauln in my experience of having a settlement visa for my Thai wife refused, for lack of supporting evidence regarding the length of the relationship. we just waited a few months and then reapplied, but this time covering all the points raised in the refusal, I also covered them in my sponsors letter, ie, mention the phone calls and enclose copies of bills etc.

Appeals are taking about 6+ months as far as i know, a friend of mine appealed against a refusal to allow his Thai wife's son to join them in England, the appeal took over 6 months and was refused, they are heard in the Uk, and take a lot of work. In my case the second application was successful, and was many months quicker, than waiting for an appeal with an unknown result. Just include with the application as much supporting evidence as possible, copies of phone bills, letters and envelopes ( send letters/cards every week) , photos with dates and locations, etc. and remember when you finally get to the UK, to keep evidence of your relationship together for future applications.

My wife now has UK citizenship so the hard work does pay off.

all the best with the process.

  6. ILR or resident permit as it is now known has only one condition, that you do not spend more than 2 years out of the UK, otherwise you will have to apply as a returning resident for settlement again...! You can stay in the UK for as long or little as you wish with a perminent resident visa (ILR) Although Immigration may want an explanation if they feel you are exploiting the Permit crazy as it may seem.

    Sorry, not the case.

If an ILR holder is living out of the UK and using their ILR just for visits and this became evident to an IO at a port of entry then the IO could, and probably would, endorse the ILR so that it allowed entry on this occasion as a visitor but after that was canceled.

    ILR is indefinite; not permanent.

A friend of mine has just returned from a holiday in the UK on an ILR visa, and was allowed entry on this occasion, but the ILR was canceled, she was last in the uk for a visit in 2008. she will have to apply for a visitors visa next time.

  7. From where to where? I find it amazing they use an 18 year old 747-400 on the LHR-BKK route, no seat back TV's.....the plane is ancient BUT they happily use a newish A340 or such on the BKK-CNX route regularly. In fact last year I flew on one that was 3 weeks old as advised by the air hostess.....for a quick 1hr hop....surely it makes sense to use a newer plane on the LHR-BKK route?

268 seats on a A340, 375 seats on a 747, They do not have any new large capacity planes available for the LHR flight, that's why Eva do well.

  8. At short notice I arranged to move to Thailand with my Thai wife, who had been in the UK for a little over 3 years.

I arranged to ship over a 20foot container with our personal effects, the price was agreed with the shipper at £1460.00 ex insurance, excluding all fees payable in Thailand.

This was collected on the 1st March, and taken to Southampton, it left Southampton on the 12th March, and arrived in Laem Charbang on 12th April, 8 days ahead of schedule,

but unfortunately during songran so was not delivered to me until the 20th April. all went well the seal on the container was unbroken.

I arranged all shipping details using my wife's Thai name with no mention of me.

A recommended local Laem Charbang agent was instructed to deal with all paperwork etc.my wife did not go to the docks.

my wife's passport was given to the agent along with a packing list. the total costs for this end were 28,000 baht. which included ALL fees payable

my Wife's passport has been stamped to show she has shipped personal effects here.

I have posted this to give anyone interested some insight into shipping personal effects here.

Mods please move to the correct forum please.

  9. quote lancashirelad - Seems to hinge on whether or not she is yet deemed to be resident:

I looked at the word resident , when does a Thai entering the UK on a 27 month visa become resident, I think it would be a matter for the courts to decide, after a not guilty plea.

A friend was caught in the same circumstances as the first poster suggested, ie an international driving license but after an ILR was issued, and was convicted in court of driving without a license, but the charge of no insurance was dropped due to the fact she ' had held a license to drive' and insurance was in force, a letter from the insurance company was produced in court.

  10. all pensions now are paid as a single persons pension, no allowances/extras are allowed for dependents, be that wives or children. this changed in April this year. Wives living in UK or Thailand should be entitled to a pension when they reach retirement aged based on their husband contributions, as long as they have not remarried. so two persons as in your example would not be allowed. pensions are frozen in Thailand but not the Filipino's. full quota of Ni contributions are now 30years. Widows pension information taken from a government web site -

Widow's Pension is payable to childless widows aged 45 or over when their husband died. This pension is payable to widows whose late husband died before 9/4/2001.

Widow's Pension is also payable to widows with children when their Widowed Mother's Allowance ends.

    and here -

Widow’s pension was replaced by bereavement allowance (see SE76173) for new claimants on or after 9 April 2001, but widows in receipt of widow’s pension before that date continue to receive widow’s pension.

Link to bereavement allowance here - http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBen...ved/DG_10018684

  11. It means that you must use the second entry before the utilised before date so as far as I know, enter and get a 60 stamp, near the end of that 60 day period obtain a 30 day extension at immigration 1,900baht, then at the end of this 30days, leave and reenter and start again, 60 days and then 30days. But second entry must be before the ulilised before date. You can then get to stay in Thailand for 180 days, with only one border run. Someone will correct me if I am wrong.

EDIT Lopburi3 types faster than me and is a man of fewer words

  12. What would you like then to do?

It was your choice to be here

You are free to leave Thailand while the parades are on

Same thing happened with Canadian/Lebanese citizens trapped in Lebanon

during Iseali incursons. The all complained to cdn gov't about lack of help.

Cdn gov't spent millions getting them safely back to Canada. Then as soon

as troubles stopped the people all went back to Lebanon.

Majority of Canadian said "if you choose to visit or live in a war zone, then

you shold be prepared to face the realities of any situation."

Why should tax payers money be spent helping people who freely choose

    to live in war zones?

and what exactly has that rant got to do with the current flight problems, and this thread????

  13. My daughter was supposed to go back to Paris last Saturday and the best TG could give me today is a waiting list flight on Sunday evening. Another 5 days.

And confirmed flights beginning of May.

    Talk about contigency measures.

why not try to get your daughter on a Zurich flight. I know its not Paris but somewhere near this week, must be better than maybe Sunday or even next month.
