  1. Assuming one is a tax resident of Thailand. Someone posted on another thread (and I forget whom) that if one uses a foreign credit card to purchase goods/services in Thailand then the amount of the purchase is classed as a taxable remittance. Fair enough. But is that always the case? Consider; if the person concerned, shall we say me, uses my foreign credit card to make such as purchase in Thailand, but I pay the credit card debt using funds from my overseas bank account (attached to my credit card) acquired before 1 January 2024, funds which I understand are now not taxable when remitted to Thailand, then there is no tax liability related to the purchase. But, if the funds used to pay the credit card debt were acquired after 1 January 2024, then the purchase is classed as a taxable remittance. Is my reasoning here sound?
  2. I am currently half way through this process, again. Two sessions of RCT - Baht 6,700 for molar tooth (3 roots). Estimated 3 sessions for crown work - Baht 14,500. Work done by two dental specialists, who work in government hospitals, but do extra work at a private clinic.
  3. Why is it called "Pranburi Beach", when it is actually in Pak Nam/Num Pran town?????
  4. I remember a few years ago my then Thai gf advised me to never upset any Thai person, as you never know what the "consequences" will be. Do not complain to any Thai if she/he has upset you, just walk away. Any time I sounded the car horn while driving she cringed, and more than once explained "Do not do that, the other driver may have a gun". Etc, etc, etc. Welcome to Thailand, the land of fragile Thai egos; so well reflected in Thailand's infamous defamation laws. If you "damage" my reputation I will sue you into poverty, or, worse, hire someone to do you some "harm" to you. TIT. Farang, beware. One never knows what "influential" connections the person you have upset has.
  5. Why do you do your immigration business yourself? Easy answer - I know the legal requirements, and meet them. I have copies of all the required forms, and can complete them myself (it will be different when my vision declines), and I can obtain all the required documents myself. I am still able to walk, talk, answer questions, etc. by myself (in a few years/decades this may not be the case). And, I am polite and respectful when I visit Immmigration, and never ever raise my voice.
  6. Over recent dacades, how many times have we come across articles similar to this (articles in Thai and other language media)? What have the Thai authorities done to rectify this problem - bad man, Baht 500 fine, do not do it again as it damages Thailand's "pure" reputation. But when a Chinese national posts on TikTok about being "afraid" around Soi Nana (Bangkok), there is a massive senior police response.
  7. Most of the trained psychologists I have met in Thailand over the past few decades have been working in the advertising industry. The article reinforces the findings a WHO report (of 2022 or 2021) that there is a growing global shortage of health care professionals.
  8. A few weeks ago I was driving past a large private hospital in Hua Hin; on the opposite side of the road to the hospital there had been an accident between a car and a motorcycle; two injured people were on the road; a rescue foundation ambulance and the police were present; here was no ambulance from the private hospital, nor could I see any medical staff from private hospital; I guess the 30-40 metre walk from the private hospital ER to the scene of the accident was too much, even on a nice sunny day.
  9. Unfortunately, it happens, in many countries. Sometimes it is incompetence, sometimes it is severely overworked medical staff who may have been on duty for 24+ hours without a rest. I am not making excuses; events like this do happen, often due to staff being over worked (as was the case in many public hospitals across the globe during the early years of COVID-19). It is pleasing, at least, in this case that the hospital chief is taking responsibility - a vary rare event.
  10. I have had GERD issues for about 35-40 years. Over time I have found that different medications, diets and lifestyle factors have "worked" then later "not worked". It is a matter of "experimenting" with different meds and diets to discover what works for you.
  11. Why did you leave Australia ? - Too difficult to live there on the pension. What year did you arrive here ? - First time 1974; to retire a decade ago. Any regrets ? - Not many. How has it turned out in the time you have been here ? - Not as well as I had hoped, but I have survived. Are you on the age pension or self fund your retirement ? - Super. Do you go back for a holiday/break ? - Never; no reason to; no family, most friends are dead. Would you ever return ? - Unlikely.
  12. From my limited general reading of the global economic and financial literature throughout this year, I cannot but agree with soulbundy - hard times ahead. From English language Thai media reports, one has to ponder whether Thailand's economic and financial leaders and Thai politicians are either making false statements or whether they are just ignorant of what is happening locally and globally. In any case, 2024 (or more correctly 2567) will be a difficult year for Thailand, made worse by the proposed enforcement of existing revenue laws taxing foreign incomes brought into Thailand.
  13. Biden, reread the final part of LBJ's 31 March, 1968 speech; and repeat it on national TV. Your pandering to the far right US Jewish lobby is a disgrace, and out of touch with what many expat Jews and Israelis feel about Netanyahu and his actions.
  14. Time for Biden to step down, or at least step aside. He has lost the plot. May I suggest he go on TV and repeat the final part of LBJ's 31 March, 1968 speech.
  15. Clearly Srettha has be adopted into the Shinawatra clan, or is now an honory Shinawatra. Will be be working to bring back "Boss Boy" also?
  16. So many current and former TAT officials seem to have zero comprehension of what is happening in the world. What is next week's plan - boost tourisim from Palestine?
  17. Will long-term expats living in Thailand be able to get one? Time will tell.
  18. I have designed and had built by good quality builders (not luxury quality) 3 houses in Australia - Canberra 1984, Townsville 1994 and Cairns 2000. The only problem I had in all those years was one broken flexible hose/pipe in a vanity unit in a bathroom in Cairns. While I was living in Cairns, 2 Category 5 cyclones hit - no water leaking, not one tile on the roof moved. Excellent construction. In Thailand, I have lived in (rented) two "luxury" houses. Luxury? 5 5 5 . Water leaking through ceiling and walls, cracks in internal and external walls, land subsistance, pool pump breaking down every 6 months, internal corners not square, 2-3 mm gaps between window/door frames and walls, etc., etc.
  19. I am in Hua Hin, not Pattaya, but I will give you my experience. I had to call for an ambulance (at about 10 am), 1669, about a month ago for a very sick Thai friend. Call was answered within about 15 seconds; the first person I spoke with had some English, but not much; she then put on another person who spoke very good Englsih. The second person was able to understand the medical problem and the directions to my residence. The ambulance arrived about 15 minutes later. The ambulance driver asked if I spoke Thai, no. But the paramedic said she understood some English (she was being modest - her English was good). Patient quickly and safely dispatched to Hua Hin Hospital.
  20. Thank you for this reply, and your later replies. When I received my new computer with Windows 11 (earlier this year?); I did do a Google search. but only found "shells" for Windows 10. Again, thank you for your replies and help.
  21. OG Optician, a 5 minute walk from BTS Udom Suk. Excellent service.
  22. When I was in my early 20s (almost 68 now), I picked up a saying "Life is terminal". One of my high school best friend's father (in mid his 50s) died when we were in high school (my own father followed 5 years later when he was 67, and I 21). My first high school class mate died in a car accident when I was 20-21. In the late 1980s, I learnt that about 15-20% of my fellow students in high school in the late 1960s - early 1970s had already died in accidents or of health conditions. Most of my good friends since the early 1980s have been 10-20 years older than me; the only one still alive will be 85 early next year; her only daughter died in December last year, aged 59. The point - when you time comes, it comes, and most of us do not know when that date will arrive.
  23. As posted above, your nearest government public hospital should be able to help. I had my 10-yearly tetanus booster at Hua Hin Hospital a few years ago, fast efficient and not expensive. I did not need any rabies shots, but I know the hospital had the vaccine at the time, as well as some snake anti-venmons.
