Politics Supreme Court to Probe Enforcement of Thaksin’s Prison Sentence

Surprised they aren't having a Committee Meeting to decide where they are going to hold the probe/investigation 😀 -
Tourism Thailand Vows to End Dual Pricing Amid Growing Tourist Backlash
sambum replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
"Thailand's Ministry of Tourism and Sports has committed to tackling notorious dual pricing practices" Didn't they promise to do this a few years ago, or am I dreaming that it was just another off the cuff "positive" remark by TAT? 🤔 -
Travel Rising Prices, Broken Systems Dim Thailand’s Tourist Charm
sambum replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
"When I did haggle, if they said 200, I would say 100, and we would agree on 150." Quite right - many tourists think that it's all part of the game, but these people have to make a living and to spend any more than a couple of minutes haggling over 10 baht for something that is probably quite good value for money anyway is taking "bargaining" a bit too far. -
Travel Rising Prices, Broken Systems Dim Thailand’s Tourist Charm
sambum replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
"This might be an issue in some cities such as Bangkok and Pattaya but it's still VERY CHEAP in Issan and the North East." And what are the prices like in the numerous restaurants and bars in Issan and the North East? -
"another porkie pig, load of rubbish. There are no tribunals" Wrong! My married couple friends actually had to go back to the UK to expain why they should not repay the overpayments, and they said it was a "tribunal" - maybe Magistrates Court, but not's let be pedantic - they had to return to the UK for that sole purpose.

Everybody I have spoken to from other countries find it unbeleivable that the UK Gov't treats its citizens so badly - plus the Old Age Pension is one of the lowest in Europe. https://www.pensiontimes.co.uk/pensions-retirement/state-pension/uk-state-pension-compare-countries Come on Starmer, give us a another surprise, and unfreeze Old Age Pensions, and I'll promise to vote for you next time - honestly!

I think quite a few people are thinking along the same lines, but if you have commitments in Thailand (wife, family etc) such a move mey not be practical. Regarding the Thai income tax plan, I believe that has been "shelved" due to the complications it could cause. One possible scenario - if I was a businessman looking to invest money in Thailand, if I had to pay tax on it, I am afraid I would be taking my business elsewhere!

Of course he has - from the OP:- "Adding to his woes is a modest private pension that fails to deliver the retirement he envisioned." And I am sure that he will have some sort of pension from the Bank where he worked. As an aside, I remember a few years ago when a bank(s) had to be bailed out by the Government because of bad investments, but it still didn't stop them from paying out bonuses to those who had made the bad investments in the first place!!!

But - but - but (Sir!) Keith Starmer said at the Summer Conference last year that "All pensioners - ALL pensioners will be better off under Labour". That of course was just before he scrapped TV licences for the over 75's (Wonder how much that saved?) and scrapped the Old Age Winter Fuel Allowance for most pensioners.

One thing that annoys me about this subject is that the Government can freeze pensions in certain countries because they do not have a "reciprocal" agreement with the UK, although I have paid contributions all my working life, and I get a small pension from my previous employer that is increased every year with no questions asked as to where I am living. This subject has been covered in depth many times, and I remember prior to the last General Election, one of the Labour candidates promised that he/she would bring it up in the Commons as a "priority" Needless to say, once Labour got in, it was "swept under the carpet" AGAIN, along with other broken promises and turnarounds by Starmer & Co. ***STOP PRESS*** Today's Government release re increase in pensions:- "Minister for Pensions Torsten Bell said: Raising the State Pension and rescuing the NHS – these are this government’s priorities to give all pensioners the dignity they deserve in their retirement. Those who have worked hard throughout their lives, paying into the system, are owed nothing less." He means of course, all pensioners EXCEPT those that have their State Pensions frozen, but it sounds and looks better to say "ALL"!!!

"Witnesses reported hearing desperate cries for help during the disturbance, but no one intervened." Typical non-response these days - nobody wants to get involved. Could someone not have just called the police? Oh, sorry, this is Pattaya, the family friendly resort and all of the police will have been out and about in the streets keeping law and order!
