  1. Thailand will deal with foreign skilled worker competition the way it always has, protectionism. For instance, it has barred foreigners from practicing law by requiring lawyers to be Thai nationals. It will do the same with doctors, accountants and any other trade or profession where they can impose a certification requirement.

    No they won't.

It will all be an ASEAN common agreement, and when you sign up, you sign up for the lot or nothing at all.

Thailand can't sign and then cherry pick what it is going to allow and not allow.

Yes, it can cherry-pick. For instance, a foreign accountant must meet all Thai national accounting certification requirements, including prior experience as an accountant within Thailand. You need to study up on the law dude.

Read condition #2: "The field of professions that will open opportunity to work freely such as medical services, dental services, nursing services, engineering services, architectural services, accountancy services, surveying qualification and tourism. However, we need to pass 2 conditions if we want to work in ASEAN countries: 1) we must have the qualification according to Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) and 2) we must follow the rule of country where we will enter to work and it is sure that each country may have the different conditions." http://www.aecnews.net/index.php/en/special-report-2/3806-free-mobility-of-professions-in-asean-community-opportunity-of-entering-to-asean

  3. This is a guy who said 47% of the electorate won't vote for him because they are government freeloaders. His on staffers say there is a 40% chance at any event, he will say something stupid. He has no chance of winning the nomination or election.

  5. If I was the CEO or HR of the US MNC that employs him, the guy would be fired. The employer would be liable for any deaths, injuries or property damage caused by this reckless driver who was acting within the course and scope of his employment (respondeat superior). Moreover, if they continue to employ him, and he causes another collision such as this, the employer would probably be liable for punitive damages.

  6. One thing that has become painfully obvious was that the FIFA WC rankings were way off base. Group D was supposed to be the second strongest group, and was labeled a "Group of Death". It was a group of mediocrity at best with England being barely mediocre. Uruguay had been upset several times during the qualifications stage and had no business being in the top 20 of the FIFA rankings. The sides from CONMEBOL, like Brazil, Argentina, Columbia and Chile are very strong, and the CONCACAF sides (Costa Rica, Mexico and US) were much stronger than FIFA had ranked.

  7. Thailand is woefully behind other countries in the region. Before I moved to LOS and was regularly sourcing offshore developers for clients not once did I come across a Thai programmer.

Vietnamese and Malaysian developers are excellent, and you get some strong Filipinos but never Thai. It's a shame for them as the top level guys can easily be commanding $50 an hour and still be cheaper than a western freelancer.

They probably should consider sorting out internet speeds if they really want to be a "digital hub".

Thailand actually has a reasonable supply of programmers and software developers. What Thailand lacks is reasonable internet connectivity due to a poor international gateway and governmental monitoring and a steady supply of venture capital for startups. Until these are fixed, there will be no Silicon Valley in Thailand. Why would anyone want to come to Thailand for an IT startup, when Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Vietnam are already lightyears ahead of Thailand?

  8. A skewed ranking system. KMUTT is not in the same league as Thamassat , Chula and AIT.

" its academic papers are being used more frequently outside Thailand."

I think that is one fairly good yardstick. If the university's graduates are publishing research that is accepted abroad, it means the standard is relatively high.

What's your idea of a good ranking system that would put Thamassat, Chula and AIT up there?

I'm not sure what a good ranking system is. Even the ranking systems that rate US universities are flawed, because they focus on things like how many volumes are owned by the university libraries and how many publications are authored by the university professors. Probably the best indicator of the quality of a university are the employment statistics of its graduates. I recruit at all of these universities, and, based on my experience, the graduates of Thamassat, Chula and AIT are of higher quality than the graduates of KMUTT and KMITL. I'm not saying that KMUTT and KMITL are not good universities, it's just that the students coming out of those universities are not as well prepared for their professional careers as the graduates of Thamassat, Chula and AIT.

  9. If they're going to import parts, forget it. The corruption in the customs department will make it uneconimical to do long-term business. If they're going to invest and build a factory, sure, that's been viable for a long time. Factories like Denso and Hitachi have been successfully operating for years.
