Thanks for the information and helpful replies.
Been moving into this new condo, so not been on line a few days.
Hopefully this matter might get resolved with the condo management, but .....
There are potentially 300+ condo units here using the insecure service. That is a lot of potential damage waiting to happen.
I do have access now to a secure wifi to access bank and similar accounts, but wouldn prefer this paid per month wifi to be made secure for obvious reasons.
I have read and taken note of what has been said ^^^^^ above and appreciate the responses.
Thanks

Do you know what days Immigration will be closed (if at all) for the Kings Birthday, (December?), for Christmas and New year?
This will help me - and maybe others - to best judge what days to cross the border and also apply for extensions.
Also, I need to extend my tourist visa for 30 days on or before 30 November - what documentation is required these days please?
Thanks.

Then that begs another question....
Both smartphones do not have sensitive data on them and I believe there is an APP or two that can help secure them, so......
any recommendations on a cheap VPN I could use for the next 4 months that would take at least 1 link - the laptop?
I've not been in this situation before so am trying to find my way through with help from you brainy people
-
Even if you secure it at your end, it eventually has to go through the unsecured wifi to reach it's destination
Edit: +1 what SoiBiker says
If you're worried about security of your data, use a VPN.
Appreciate the response
Yeah, so it does have to go through their unsecured network.
Another idea bites the dust!!
VPN......
For each unit used on this unsecured network, I need to log on with each device with a different pin code.
So for the laptop = pin xxxxxA
Android phone = pin xxxxB
for g/f phone = pin xxxxC
One VPN would not cover all 3 connections?
Or would one VPN do the trick?
If more than one VPN needed, would a wifi router of my own allowing several connections allow me to use one VPN - if you get my drift?
-
The condo where I am has an unsecured wifi network. This poses obvious problems of people being able to see me online, even with some protections set up like turning off file sharing etc.
That leads me to my question......
There is a LAN cable available across the whole room.
Can I plug that LAN cable into a wifi router of my own and set up a secure network that way? Or would that cause conflicts with the main router they use?
No point in acquiring my own router if the idea will not work
Helpful suggestions appreciated.
Thanks
I am currently using 3G secure wifi to log on since I saw the unsecured network warning, but would rather use a faster connection and cheaper too, especially as my 3G wifi is limited and not cheap.
Yes, I have informed the management regards the unsecured network and they have said they will get their technichian to look into it - so I cannot complain in that regard.

Ah!!!!! All makes perfect sense now!
So in essence, £75 postal order for the visa + £9.38 postal order fee + £6.45 for special delivery + £10 cash in the envelope so the embassy would send it back "signed for" = a grand total of £100.83 (more than £95 as you so rightly said!)
You included a non-stamped self addressed envelope, and they turned it around in 3 days.
And I presume you had the postal order made out to "The Royal Thai Embassy."
Yes???
send your own stamped / paid for return envelope. I always have with no problems.
I also send cash. Never a postal order. No problems there either.

Are we forgetting that the current administration's mandate is to attract "quality" tourists?
One might suppose that there are a great number of people who in Western eyes are not particularly wealthy, but who can afford to live on little and stay in Thailand for 6 months of the year.
Those are the types of farang with pot bellies and severe alcohol addition, that hang about Irish pubs, or sit on bar stools chatting to shrivelled conniving bar girls, and who for the most part, are contributing only a small amount to the Thai economy.
There are significant numbers of terrifically wealthy tourists from Russia, Europe and China and Japan who are seriously injecting massive amounts of cash into this economy, and for whom these new restrictions will be not be restrictions.
If you have money - these restrictions become merely an inconvenience.
If you don't - then they become a serious challenge.
Good luck to all!
Ah, yes, that old chestnut of slagging everyone off and tarring them with the same brush because they may not have millions of Baht laid around in their bank. Some are still paying off mortgages yet have enough to be able to travel. That does not make them any less quality tourists.
There are more and more retired people each year. The figures are outstripping the younger generations.
Not all of these are fat, pot bellied alcoholics sitting around in bars here chatting up the local bar girls. Many pop out to a small local restaurant or a small local bar to meet friends they have acquired over the years. To a lot of these small Thai owned places, these retired people can be a lifeline. Their bread and butter customers.
Many of these retired people are the ones with less chance of having £5000 laid around in a current account. Many have pensions from their government and private pensions too that they live on quite comfortably.
These people like to travel, stay in Thailand for 4, 5 6 months a year to escape the harsher winters in Europe. The money each of these spend might not amount to much individually, but as a whole many contribute quite well to the Thai economy. You do not have to be a big spender.
They are less likely to be here working on the side.
For those coming here to work as teachers or similar, yes, I can see the need for the government to want to curtail their activities.
I feel the Thai government needs to re-look at this for those retired people and have some exemption against this £5000 rule.
Many retired people will now possibly look to other nearby countries to stay where there are less restrictions. Surely that is a loss to the Thai economy and to its - cough, cough - tourist visitor numbers it so relies upon.
I will wait a while to see if there is some sort of amendment to this regarding retired people. If not, I too will look elsewhere rather than jump through these hoops that I feel are wrong.

Regards the bank statement itself, I too have not had one for many years as I am 'paperless' withh my bank(s).
I would have to pay extra for an official statement from the bank.
With regards to the £5000 just laid around in my current account? Not a chance of that. My money is used for other things, yet I can afford to be in Thailand 6 months a year over winter using 2 Tourist Visas.
It seems that if I want to continue 'overwintering' here in Thailand I'd have to do a run to get a 2nd Tourist Visa.
Seems to me that Thailand is shooting itself in the foot because I'd not be so easily inclined to fart about getting a 2nd Tourist Visa from Laos or somewhere.

Today, I get Marshmallow updates for both phones (my daughter and mine). Installed without problems. SD card is set as portable storage.
My SD cards are from the old phones, so there is no need to format SD cards.
WhamBam, in your situation I would try to replace the SD Card.
I have swapped the cards. Problem remains the same with portable storage not working with photos.
I am reluctant to set the new card as internal because then it cannot be formatted to use with Windows in the laptop, even after re-formatting in the phone as portable.
Maybe there is a glitch in my Marshmallow download.
-
Using a 2ND SD card, if I format it as internal storage it will transfer photos and other data.
Yet the card formatted as Portable cannot be seen to store photos on.
Portable would be preferable to me.
I do notice the format of the card for Portabe reaches 20% then it says it is formatted.
Phone restarted an into settings USB / STORAGE and nothing is there.
Any ideas?
-
WhamBam,
Have you restarted your phone?
Yes.
This morning it tells me (again) New SD card detected.
-
Lucky for me I use the FX BOOTH and get better rates than posted by the bank.
No more ATM fees

HELP !!
I am stumped.
The problems being with both my Micro SD card and also linking the phone to my laptop via USB
I am on Marshmallow
The SD card.
Formatted originally to FAT32.
I put it into the IQII phone and formatted it as requested for portable storage but I cannot save any photos to it.
The phone constantly tells me 'New SanDisk card detected.'
I have ticked the box that asks me if I want to save the files elswhere.
Am I missing something here?
I have tried the standard camera and MX camera but no option to save to the SD card - only to Facebook LINE etc.
Storage and USB tells me
Portable Storage
SanDisk SD card
320 KB used of 7.4 GB
Yet I look and there is nothing but empty folders.
Why are no photos getting stored onto it?
And what if I want to put music on?
IQii to Laptop.
When I ask it to open files, it says there is nothing there at all whether I click on Import Pictures and videos or Open device to view files.
Yet there are photos on the phone.
Am I missing something here too?
Thanks
-
Yes. Phone offers to format the card and then move media files to it.Do you guys were able to utilize SD card, to make it function same as the main memory?
Other than that I did not try. Looks still like this
Thanks oilinki,
So, first, you need to save somewhere your data on the SD card, and then, to format it. Were you able to upload your saved data back to the SC card?
Use a card reader or similar. Save any important data to a computer.
I formatted my card and am using it now with no problems in the phone
BUT
my computer says I CANNOT format the card to read it.
I will try another method

Disgusting.
To see her hang like a rag doll after he pulled her up by her hair too . . . .
He deserves severe punishment.
Yet, this happens the world over - often in private where no video is available - sadly.
-
Updated. Took about 15 minutes.
Then it sorted my SD card for storage.
Firefox works.
LINE works.
MX camera App works.
Updates working.
Microphone works great - even with my Yorkshire accent
-
I nam installing it now (marshmallow).
Will see what happens

Maybe time for a water tank??
good idea.
After 4 days with a dribble and drip when I lived over there a tank is what bought and installed after the landlady refused to install one.
Needless to sat I took it and the pipework with me when I left

I'm too very happy with my IQ II.
It's my third and the best Android phone so far.
I didn't see leatherette case for IQ 2. How much is it? Where did you bought it?
In the i-mobile shop. About 300 Baht.
Bought mine at their shop in Tesco north Pattaya.
Dropped the phone. It bounced. no damage.
-
Had my IQII about 10 days now since I saw this topic.
Two updates in the first few days - after the updates done in the shop.
This is my very first Android phone (my others always being Nokias). I think it is great. I paid extra for the leatherette case and am glad I got that accessory.
I find it is very fast at connecting to the local wifi spots I have saved. logs onto them automatically.
in general the phone is quick. some friends are surprised how fast the phone is compared to theirs.
Battery life for me averages a little over 2 days. Recharge time is quite fast too. I like the idea of seeing how long until full charge.
With this phone I can also save money by phoning friends for free with LINE - something none of my Nokias would do. That may not sound like much of a saving but adds to the value of the phone.
The screen has adaptive viewing turned on and it works very well for me.
The HUGE font size is great too.
The screen is clear and crisp.
The volume could be a little better, yet the call quality knocks spots off my Nokia(s), because it is much clearer.
More available memory too because I am not overloaded with built in game Apps.
I realise many of the features with the phone are because it runs Android, but there may be many out there stuck - as I was - with what I would class as inferior software with my past Nokias.
I have yet to have full working knowledge of Android but am having great fun learning.
All in all, I am happy with this phone and at less than £100 I think it is great value.
Thanks to those who started and added to this topic that turned me to this phone

Nirun is cleaner and has a lot more facilities at hand than 9 Karat.
Nirun is generally more expensive to rent.
The cheap rooms in Nirun tend to be about 25 sq mtrs.
more food choice + a gym at Nirun.
Keycard security - but people let people in with no cards.
Security has been stepped up at Nirun.
9 Karat never seems to be clean - though the cleaning ladies do mop the floors every day in the corridors. Yet, the walls are grubby.
some external buttons missing on the single lift, but the other 2 lifts seem okay.
The pool is better at 9 Karat.
9 Karat have been making some basic improvements but they only seem to be scratching the surface.
The poolside bar is pleasant and quite cheap.
IMHO neither will be anywherte near 'upmarket' because they are relatively cheap condo units.
There are plenty of facilities nearby. BigC a few hundred mtrs. Beach road 50 Baht on a m/c. Enough 7/11's + small Tescos.

Having been away for a while in the UK I come back to fine out Cloud 9 on soi 8 beach road has closed.
Does anyone know what happened to the band? Have they moved to a new venue?
I seem to recall they bar was struggling for customers before I left, but it seems to have been there forever and I came back to see a huge blank area.
We went to 'We are the World', but the music had too much Thai for my liking and poor quality sound. Though the beer prices are not so bad.
Next we tried the Corner bar on the corner of soi 7 and beach road. The music was better but at 90 baht a small beer, that makes it more expensive than the UK for a beer.
Maybe time to look at either of the 'Wonderful bars' on 2nd road. I recall they were not too bad.
Any other bars with decent music left these days?

Why don't security guards in Thailand carry guns?

Are you crazy?
Security guards with guns?
even very few police in the UK carry guns.
Why would you want some unregulated person to be given weapons to shoot ( most likely miss ) someone and possibly injure an innocent bystander?
Sounds like utter madness to me.
