  1. The rules are as they are.

And yes, I don't know of people having problems/being arrested for violating those rules, but those rules are there.

which rules? (i hope not the one that defines all action including breathing as working.. biggrin.png)

i was under the impression this is a grey area, did something change?

Not grey at all, really black.white but not enforced.

Up to the OP to make a decision to base a stay here in Thailand on that yes or no.

    so same rule then :D

  2. always 2 sides to a story, if they differ, 1 must be incorrect, who to believe is the 6 million dollar question

yes, one side is renowned to play fast and loose with the truth to make sure the facts fit the "story"..

    the other is a reporter

OK... so... Reporters never make up stories ? Reporters never arrange facts so that they fit with their theory ? Reporters never use their Press status to make the police release them in a hurry when they've been caught red-handed doing something wrong ?

I have no particular sympathy with the Thai police (or any other police for that matter) but I'm somewhat impressed to see how most posters here side massively with the journalist, as if that corporation was never at fault. Just explore your memories, my friends, and think of an event you witnessed first hand, and then read about in the papers. How impressed were you with the accuracy of the report ?

My actual impression (and yes, I may be totally wrong) on this one is that :

1/ a Times reporter was caught by the Thai police with his finger in something dirty,

2/ he witnessed some uncalled for brutality by the RTP, possibly against himself as well

3/ he didn't get into any deeper trouble because he made it clear who he was

4/ he then proceeded to cook up a vengeful article in which he largely arranged the facts to give the worst possible image of the Thai cops

5/ as the saying goes 'vengeance is a bad counsellor' because his article is now backlashing in his face.

I repeat, I may be totally wrong, but I strongly believe in this hypothesis, and frankly I don't have much more confidence in journalists than in cops, anywhere in the world, when it comes to tampering with the truth.

    my post was satirical

    great rebuff though :D

  3. Instead, the biggest complaint against cabbies made by Thai Bangkokians is being refused a ride.

Each year sees several thousand official complaints of cabbies saying no to a fare.

i must be the unluckiest guy in bangkok with taxis then it seems it takes an average of 3 attempts to get a yes even for the most simple ride.

last month my wife had just been checked out of Rama hospital and it took 5 attempts to get a taxi for the hospital to Victory Monument (3kms away). sickening as it was obvious she was feeling weak, still hazy from the meds and really needed to get back to our hotel to rest up. <deleted>.

  4. Rhetorical question: but if no financial proof is needed, than what stops a foreigner married to a Thai from heading to Laos to apply for a new Marriage Visa every year if he doesn't have the funds necessary for an extension based on marriage?

    Nothing. Many people do that.

Hummm. Good to know. I always wonder what options farangs are going to have if their county's currency crashes against the Thai baht or the Thai baht appreciates against farang currencies. One day you're making 50K ฿ a month, the next you're making 25K ฿ because the exchange rate goes bonkers. "Bye bye honey. Say goodbye to the family and kids for me. The Thai government's kicking me out of the country because because I'm no longer 'making enough money' to stay in country. Hope you can find someone else to support you."

I do think about that - much too often in this day and age.

put 400K baht in a thai bank and this is not a problem

  5. ^ News source doesn't seem reliable, someone posted in this thread they were released already days ago with a slap on the wrist, yet the article implies they're detained / in court proceedings.

Then that article says they were tutoring Chinese spies... huh?

Oh dear, well one only hope they make an example of these people including the owners of the company as a deterrent to others, Crack down on Ed visa's, back to back visa runs, one suspects crackdown on "English" schools next , this sort of behaviour will only stop or reduce when the full penalties under the law are used, go and jail the overstayer for few years

Although the banning from Thailand is not law yet, its things like this, which will make them push these sorts of laws through

    Keep dreaming.

What do you mean, so someone posting something on here is more reliable than a published news story, the comments on here are unsubstantiated and unverifiable, therefore cannot by their nature be seen as reliable

As stated previously due to the actions of very selfish people one can expect further crack downs on people working illegally, people who blatantly abuse the Ed visa system and people who abuse visa waiver system

These same groups of people will be whinging that immigration makes it so hard to live in Thailand but one can only suggest that the a people who are abusing the systems are the ones in part who are creating the environment for immigration to make things harder for certain groups of people, so in simple words..... Its your own fault

not quite sure why you are always harping on about tourists, visa exempts and students abusing visas, most of the really big abusers are the writers, traders, bar "owners" and con artists on RETIREMENT visas

  6. They seem to choose a Thai girl who looks western, who won't be as attractive as western girls. How about choosing a beautiful Thai girl who looks like she's from Thailand, they may then have a chance to win.

    Actually, they have: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/776468-mathayom-3-student-wins-thai-supermodel-2014/

But if you look at that thread, the farangs on TV are still criticizing the Thais and the poor girl, saying she's not attractive. What gives?

i don't think there is a collective voice on here lol

there are many shades of expat ;)
