  1. It's a combination of the much older phenomenon of grumpy old men, emboldened by the anonymity of internet forums. Mostly benign, and generally a lot less harmful than the social media cesspools that suck in younger generations.
  2. The Philippines/UK agreement was not instigated by the UK government, but by the Philippines government back in the 1980s as part of an outreach for reciprocal benefits with other countries where there are large numbers of OFWs. Aside from the UK they also signed agreements with many European countries, as well as Japan, Korea and Canada.
  3. Just going on the increase from 800k to 2m, could be looking at 290k. 800-1m @ 20% = ฿40000 1m-2m @ 25% = ฿250000
  4. Nothing wrong with your memory, it used to be there on the forms pertaining to the Non O-A extension. The grandfathering rules for pre 1998 are set out in clause 7.
  5. Could've been worse. He could have said "Och aye the noo"...
  6. Got to feel a bit sorry for him. When I was at school anyone who ran like that would have been teased and bullied mercilessly.
  7. I like how he was sitting on the steps outside HealthLab, presumably waiting for them to open in a few hours...
  8. Presumably most of them would be quite pleased by this development.
  9. For the most common type of damage (wall cracks etc) the compensation is absurdly low - I think there's a sliding scale beginning at around 75 baht.
  10. This seems to repeat every year. It was funniest a few years ago when the Ministry of Culture objected strongly to the eroding of Thai values through topless dancing during Songkran, only for them to be reminded that their own website had a mural of naked ladies splashing water.on each other... https://www.nationthailand.com/life/30340072
  11. This is the guy they had to rescue from Kabul a few years back 555 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miles_Routledge
  12. On my last trip to India a few years back I was surprised how prices had jumped since the 1990's. I think Thailand is better value on a like for like budget and quality of life is way superior (very important in later years). India is fantastic for visits long and short but living there full time would be too much for most people. As mentioned earlier there's no long stay retirement visa options. And don't be fooled by apparent spirituality, the country has more bogus holy men than anywhere in the world.
  13. It's about time Phuket had it's own dedicated crime forum...
  14. I've had success with Mytello for landline calls with family - not tried it with banks or govt organisations etc yet.
  15. For the specific questions brought up here I'd suggest contacting the Thailand Elite office (TPC). As I understand there should be no problem with any of what you've outlined but they would be able to explain the mechanics of it. TPC is a membership that includes a visa (rather than a visa per se), and that membership doesn't expire if it's temporarily interrupted by switching to another visa class that allows for employment, rather it's just put on hold for a time. Not sure whether this would also apply to the other privileges such as airport fast track, limos etc.
  16. RIP. My favourite film of his was The Salton Sea.
  17. I'd forgotten about Collin Piprell. Kicking Dogs was a blast!
  18. Generally if I see a book with a title like "Hello big honey, my name Fon" I give it a wide berth. But there's a world of difference when it's a respected and established author like Theroux who writes well and can really evoke a sense of time and place. The best fiction I've read about the region generally is older stuff like Orwell "Burmese Days" (which also features a local liaison gone wrong), Somerset-Maugham's Far East literature etc.
  19. Thanks for the tip, reading it on kindle now - good stuff.
  20. Given that an earthquake is classed an "act of God" and the building that collapsed was to have been the future National Audit Office, could it be that God smote it down due to disapproval of the incoming Revenue Department proposals?
  21. Dr Pufinjai jumped out at me too. Not your typical นามสกุล 🤪
  22. In one aspect he seems like a sort of evolution of that pick-up artist culture that was popular 20 years ago - he even seems to have taken on the style and appearance of Neil Strauss who wrote The Game. Not sure if the whole approach has aged so well, but the book was an interesting and entertaining read and the author was quite smart and likeable. Tate is somewhat more obnoxious and morally dubious, and has thrown politics and other things into the mix, but a lot of It's quite similar.
  23. I just completed this quiz. My Score 30/100 My Time 225 seconds
