  1. “This arrest is part of a broader initiative spearheaded by the Commander of Immigration Division 5, aimed at clamping down on immigration violations throughout the region.” No, the arrest was as a result of a tipoff, following years of failure to detect his overstay through the cumbersome system of renewals, 90 day reports etc.
  2. The problem would be easily solved if the responsible authorities got off their a@&ses and dealt with it. The irrational attitude of not culling them is just an excuse for inaction, supported by pseudo religion. Have to wait for Poo Yai Baan’s relatives to be bitten then see how quickly something gets done.
  3. Only if you take the time to really expand the image, Dave!
  4. Driver already said he had no car or accident insurance in OP.
  5. I support microchipping for dogs and cats, to ensure owners can be traced, but cats pose little nuisance to anyone compared to dogs. It would be better if the feral cat population was controlled to avoid their horrible lifestyles.
  6. It is not clear if the jet skis were returned to their operators after the 10000 baht fines were imposed.
  7. They will be shared with the consumers who will pay more.
  8. Follow the money. If the loan was paid back in cash, what was the source of the cash? Would need to be a big mattress to hide all those “savings”. The Revenue Dept should also be involved to show his declarations of income.
  9. Has there been an update on the school bus fire tragedy, or will that join the list of inactive investigations? By now I would expect all CNG and NGV buses to have been inspected and certified safe, those responsible to have been charged to court, and a stiffer inspection regime to have been introduced to prevent a recurrence. But as someone said above TIT.
  10. They should really compare the pollution from asthma inhalers with the output of one Chinese coal fired power station or EV battery mining/production facility.
  11. My mother was an immigrant refugee to the UK after WW2, and her only socio political activity was membership of the IFL, International Friendship League, a body set up to foster relations between immigrants and the indigenous population. I can’t understand why some refugees enjoying the hospitality of the UK don’t try to assimilate to the local community instead of forming enclaves that try to establish little islands of their home countries, without adapting. Their behaviour promotes discrimination and lack of acceptance. If they wish to protest against the regimes in their home countries, they should do it without attacking the police and communities who actually keep them safe.
  12. Could be if there were leaking CNG cylinders in the area of the fire source, like in the recent school bus tragedy.
  13. The tension in high voltage lines can be sufficient to arc across the air and shock you even without physical contact. This is why you arrange for power to be switched off or diverted before working near them. Obviously that wasn’t part of his apprenticeship.
  14. They should print off the picture of his bandaged body and stick it up in every scooter hire shop. Might make people think twice.
  15. Cheap and safe don’t go together, I wonder which method was used here?
  16. In the West, people tie bunches of flowers to lampposts on the footpaths at the scene of fatalities. Couldn’t the ceremony have been held on the footpath without disrupting everyone else? Or shut the road for a few minutes to honour the dead, not twelve hours.
  17. “Take those guards off, you don’t need them on this machine, they get in the way”.
  18. Tragic but completely avoidable with a little thought. Allowing children to play on a construction site is always dangerous, especially where water is involved. Why wasn’t the grandfather or other family member looking after the child?
  19. Why do reporters feel the need to identify senior officers who only supervise these operations? Is it part of the preening process? Western journalists rarely do this fan boy stuff, preferring to concentrate on the facts of the operation, like the significant recovery of four vehicles over four provinces!
  20. What’s happening to the 154 seized animals not being repatriated? Are they already dead?
  21. Long tail boats are inherently unstable, their narrow beam and high mounted truck engine making them vulnerable to winds and currents from the side. They should be banned for passenger use but won’t be as they are cheap to buy and run and make more profit for their owners at the expense of their passengers’ lives.
  22. Before voting to hang him I think he should be psychologically assessed as his behaviour is not normal. It may be there are mitigating circumstances that should be taken into consideration when deciding the outcome.
  23. I live in a gated community in the suburbs of Bangkok that has a card operated (and 24hr staffed) barrier at the entrance and another at each phase entrance. If anyone wants to visit the guard rides a motorcycle to the house to check. Visitors are issued a paper pass at each checkpoint which I stamp to authorise their exit. Consequently it is very secure and we never have non-residents wandering about. I feel much safer than I ever did in England.
  24. We usually hear about the grandstanding arrests but rarely about their names, charges and their actual court appearance/sentence, seizure of assets, restitution to victims of the criminals. This makes me suspect that many cases are dealt with informally by the transfer of funds to officials before subsequent release, rinse, repeat. Maybe I should start visiting the courts to report on whoever actually appears. Need to improve my Thai, perhaps a local journalist could do their job first.
