  1. Cranes have safety devices such as Load Movement Indicators giving visual and/or audible alarms to the operator if load limits are exceeded. In this case the alarms were either ignored or had been disabled. Toppling crane incidents are recorded all over the world and are not restricted to Thailand. Of great importance is proper training, testing and certification of crane driver/operators which seems to be lacking here.
  2. It's her first brush with the law.....
  3. The Chinese were permitted to buy the land site including the existing building around seven years ago.. The owners would require planning permission to change the function. Despite the entire site being around 22000 square meters I cannot believe it will all be an 'Embassy' with thousands of 'diplomatic' staff.
  4. That carpark appears to have a good quality reinforced concrete curtain wall which has withstood the impact of the car accelerating from an inner parking slot into an empty outer parking slot. The vehicle has mounted the wall and not smashed through it unlike other examples reported in the past where car and driver have fallen to the ground with fatal results.
  5. In my working life and decades in Thailand I note that the most likely cause of dropped loads during crane lifts are failed wire cables, slings and attachments such as shackles. These items are subject to daily inspection and maintenance including propers storage when not in use and should be load tested periodically as indicated by a stamped metal plate attached to the sling. As a spectator I have seen corroded and kinked wire slings in use on many sites. Clearly, a tower crane operator cannot descend to check a load is safely attached before each lift and has to rely on workers on the ground.
  6. He will need to find a replacement for his assigned tasks of supervisising a sewer maintenance team and teaching English language to inmates to ensure continuity.
  7. Because the Isaan Bang Fai lauch site has a poor track record.

  12. It's the current buzzword. Writers seem to feel it is neccessary to tag most subjects as 'iconic'. Fortunately, it was not also described as 'fantastic'.

  15. A pledge to complete the overhead Expressway on Highway 35 Bangkok/Samut Sakhon/Samut Songkhran and westwards would be wecome before extolling plans for new projects.
  16. It seems the life-cycle cost of raising a child in China is very high and is the maid deterrent,
  17. Calculating the actual age of Thai seniors is complicated by insufficient information on theit birth certificates particularly those born in the 1940s. Foe example, my Thai wife's birth certificate records her as born in January 1945 with no Day date. Her younger sister's birth certificate shows 1947 with no month and no day dates. The parents in rural familes of the 1940s often delayed formally reporting the births and being uneducated and illiterate did not record births to paper relying only on memory. Since this was widespread and recognised from formal periodic Census returns the resonsible Goverment departments had to make concessions when recording and individuals status. This is refected in the issue of a first national Identity Card and later Passport where, unlike Western documents, the Date of Birth may be one 'agreed' at the point of registration.
