  1. Something that may be of interest to some.

As many of you who know me , know, I have been in business here in CM for almost 25 years now. Over the years I have seen a lot of coming and goings, especially in local business'.  The city certainly has changed in those years , so much so that when I go out for a look-a-round it almost looks like another city .  My question/request for our highly valued brain trust is ,,, I would like you please to name some of the business people , you know/knew. who were in business here, some years back , and for whatever reason are not here any longer.  Either the business went down or they just wanted to move on to greener pastures.  Sometimes our friends and/or neighbors just fade away and we don't realize it for years.   People like Eddie of The Escape fame.  I think it would be good to hear if they have  gone on to other things and what they may be doing and wherever they may be.  Hope that this is of interest to some and hope to see some interesting things turn up.  Thanks in advance gang. ...  Gonzo

  2. Something has annoyed me for sometime now, and maybe someone knows the correct answer.

I know in certain countries it is against the law to have any lights on the front facing of your vehicle except for amber or the white of headlights.   Does Thailand not have such a rule or ordinance?  You look at oncoming trafic at night and some look like oncoming Christmas Trees.  There are any and all colors of the rainbow.  It is most distracting particularly when you see oncoming lights flashing red or blue , for obvious reasons.  Anyone know if Thailand has any such law or reg??

  3. Strange that this should pop up just now.  I find myself in the same position.  Was mentally composing my thoughts for a call to my attorney.  I have been wheelchair bound for a number of years, as some of you know.  But I recently had the misfortune of having a leg amputated.   Each year I usually go to KL to get another Non Imm B Visa.  I go by myself and with the assistance of air staff, have no difficulty with the transportation portion and the hotel staff are just great and do help with the KL land portion of the journey.  But now the new obstacle.  With a missing leg, it is really dicey getting in and out of the wheelchair as well as balance and other difficulties keep popping up.  Dr. sez that it will take some months before I would be able to get an artificial leg.  All this gives me some pause and a bit of fear in going on a journey like this.  I will follow this thread to see if any other program or alternative is reported.

in today's Nation newspaper, article on Mae Sai and Tachilek flooding...

    nationmultimedia.com/detail/breakingnews/30324182

I'm going to Tachilek monday, but am not worried.  I've only seen the crossing bridge closed once in the past 20 yrs, and that was when water was actually lapping over the bridge road, and that was only for a half day.  One of the photos gave an idea of the extent of today's flooding, and the water level appears to be several meters below the bridge roadway.  It's small solace for the dozens of vendors who have been flooded, but it's no impediment for border crossers.

also; I recently got an online visa for Burma. It was us$50 and rather painless process.  If applying, you'll need a passport-like photo of your face, on computer file (.jpg).   When the online visas were initially introduced, about 1.5 yrs ago, they only allowed entry at Yangon or Mandalay.  Now they allow entry at Tachilek (and a few other border crossings).

Still no re-instatement of day-only 'VIP passes'.  The Burmese authorities would like them, but the restriction is from Thai Imm authorities.  My opinion, for the reason they're banned is:  Thais figure tourists can buy anything on the Thai side, so they want to forbid tourists from going over for the day.  Thai authorities, in their great wisdom, are afraid tourists will spend money in Tachilek, that would be spent in Mai Sai.  It's primitive (thinking that tourists are only about spending money, and nothing else), but it's what we've come to expect from brain-addled Thai authorities.

One exception:  Chinese tourists in groups are allowed to do day-trips.  Go figure.

Have a bit of comment and question re above.   Went up about 10 days ago and had Immig on Burma side ask the usual...." going into Tachilek or just turn around?  I answered that I was going into the market .  The Immig. lady's next question gave me pause for thought..... She asked if I was coming back today.   I said, "don't I have to "?? She said no.  I then asked how long I could stay.... she stated 14 days.   Anybody encounter as as expat crossing without a formal visa, being able to stay for up to 14 days???

So.... where in CNX do we find this wonderful lady?

Sorry David but that was so many years ago and over the ensuing years she gained so much weight and her fingers got so fat, she lost all her clients.

PS Don't worry, just hang in there , she's on a diet........ write to you next year.

I'd be surprised if there were any at all, apart from some Chinese nationals perhaps. Though there is that guy who said he used to go there to his remote office, I reckon you'll be the only westerner or one of only 2-3 that live there, if you go. Lashio is the kind of place where if you're a westerner, you'll receive equal stares and smiles at every corner. It's rare for foreigners to venture there, even as far as tourists go.

Thanks for that Jimster.  I'd about given up hope of any response to the post.  Thanks

    again.

His main base is now in Bangkok but he does still have a place in the Gymkhana area....his wife also has land in Mae Rim.

Never met the guy but have spoken to his wife on many occassions.... she is a very lively and funny lady,

Don't believe the rumor that when you say " I DO " that you loose your voice.   If you persist in believing that, I will introduce you to many, many wives that will prove that wrong.

WILL A MOD REMOVE THIS POST..... ATTACHED TO THE WRONG POST  THANKS

  8. Sad news again.   Did not see much of him in the past few years and now another of the CM old timers has gone.  RIP Dennis and give my best to all the old gang.   Not many of the 30 year ago gang left anymore.  RIP & Godspeed.

  10. Missing in the news section is an article that directly should aid alien workers in Thailand.

Its missing so I will post it here.

"Thailand’s Labour Ministry has plans to provide better amenities for foreign workers in accordance with international standards and respect for human rights."

Yep, that it boys and girls.  Thats the whole article.  It says has plans for. Does the briefness of this report indicate just how much serious intent there is or not?  What do you think?
