It would be nice to get rid of the religious Fascists! However the problem is that the opposition is quite fragmented and rather weak. Some places are obviously scarry, but I would assume that most of those bad assessments also have to do with the travellers' own attitude and behavior. And also with the lack of understanding of local habits and culture. For example Russians don't look friendly. The main reason is that Russians usually don't smile to people they don't know. Once you've been introduced they can be quite friendly.

I don't know, but my "theory" is obvious. "overstating the damage is in the interest of Iran, as it means downplaying the remaining risk." If it is claimed that the damage is higher than what it really is, Iran may be spared further strikes and may quietly develop nuclear weapon.

"So why should it matter to the US if Europe spends more on defense or not." Good question, in particular as it won't necessarily mean that the U.S. will spend less. It's probably because a significant share of European military expenses will be spent on U.S. weapons and equipment.
