Just another day crossing the road...
richard_smith237 replied to brewsterbudgen's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
I agree... and if a cyclist hits a pedestrian at a crossing in the UK, they are held responsible (even if the pedestrain is not paying attention - but I think there are also other variables at play too). Its a separate point: but its a valid arguement that ALL road users should have insurance... which can pay out for 'at fault damages' and compensation. Imagine getting hit by a cyclist at a crossing and you can no long work ? In Thaiand, if you are hit by an uninsured motoryclist ?... I can't get 'workers comp insurance' directly, but have it with the company I am currently working for (which pays up to 12 months max of missed work)... ... but if an uninsured motorcyclist seriously injurs me at a crossing ? ... or even a car... Will they pay out for loss of earnings if I can't work - if they have no money and aren't insured - there is nothing to get anyway ?... life is full of risks, but the absensce of effective policing makes these risks and also consequences far greater. -

Possible, if your implication is that a vehicle could obstruct line of sight to approaching lunatics swerving out at the last second... .... However, not looking at all is a distant cry from being on heightened alert when crossing a road... ------ The only time I've nearly been hit on a crossing.. - A box van didn't want to completely stop, while all other traffic had stopped for the crossing, the box van slowed, but didn't stop trying to 'time my crossing' as he approached so he didn't have to stop... a large wing mirror clipped me. Stupidly, in anger I kicked the side of the Van... I was furious.. the drive stopped, got out, looked at me and got back in his van and drove off... (I was lucky he wasn't more of a nutter). - Another time, crossing with my Son, all traffic stopped, a taxi driver didn't like that we were on the crossing so blasted his horn and didn't want to stop... ... I waved annoyance with my arm (not the middle finger or anything like that), but that was still enough to annoy the taxi driver... he skidded to a halt, abandoned his taxi in the middle of the road (ekammai) and got out... I was with my Son (about 5 years old) and was not about to get into a fight, so I just continue on. Point here - is the are lunatics about, the authorities do nowhere near enough to ensure that ALL drivers of any vehicles know they will face serious penalties for not stopping for pedestrians.... -
Taxi Driver Nabbed at Phuket Airport with Drugs and Weapons
richard_smith237 replied to snoop1130's topic in Phuket News
How many taxi drivers carry weapons in their taxi in Thailand ? It would of course a guess and someone is bound to levy the accusation of Thai bashing or prejudice etc.. but.. how many reports do we read of taxi drivers involved in fights we weapons... So.. whats the estimate ? half of taxi drivers carry weapons in their taxis ? -

Just another day crossing the road...

.. Yet, the most notable pedestrian crossing tragedy in recent memory was the death of a Thai doctor, which swiftly prompted a nationwide 'crackdown'. However, this heightened awareness was followed mere weeks later by the death of an elderly Thai woman, struck by a bus at a crossing. It could be argued that when it comes to self-preservation, Thai citizens appear to exercise less caution than tourists, and markedly less so than Western expatriates - certainly when looking at the behavior motorcyclist this would appear true. -
The mass of the car and atmospheric drag have a negligible effect over short distances like this. For much higher falls where terminal velocity might be reached, the impact speed would be limited to the calculated terminal velocity of around 179 m/s. For a 15-metre drop, the original calculation of 17.14 m/s remains approximately correct. Thus: The calculated 'speed' at impact 61.7kmh (38.8mph) is not impacted by mass or atmosphere (the impact of mass / size / atmospheric density is minute to the point of being negligable).

In Thailand, it has always been the law that pedestrians have the right of way at crossings. Yet, it often takes the tragic death of someone deemed 'important' or an incident that stirs sufficient media and social media attention for a 'crackdown' to be declared. This pattern repeats across many similar issues in Thailand. The laws themselves are typically sound, but it is the pervasive disregard for these laws and the widespread apathy in their enforcement by authorities (especially the Police) that allow such problems to persist unchecked. Only when a significant figure is affected, or when public outrage reaches a peak, do we see a momentary 'crackdowns' announced as someone in a position of authorite makes their public statement... we may then witness brief flashes of adherence to the laws in certain areas that fade just as quickly as they arise. -
A road incident in Thailand occurs between the hours of midnight and 5am and you suggest there is no 'reason' to suspect booze was involved.... I agree that suspicion involves prejudice, but its far from short of reason... Meanwhile, given the abudnant news articiles of DUI incidents at night time in Thailand, your objection to the assumption that booze was involved is weaker than it would be had the incident occured at 3pm or in the UK or Germany... Prejudice, yes, but that prejudice does not exist in a vaccum....

you know absolutely nothing - but you are ruled by your own prejudices. Which are fueled by repeated reports of drunk drivers crashing, killing themselves or others.. This happened at 4:40am... newbee is probably right... But if you don't want discussion while the burden of proof is absent, you are news sites you can read one which people cannot comment... After all, this is a forum designed for discussion..... We'll never find out of course, and so the debate here will continue without knowledge and you'll argue that we should not speculate... and I'll repeat that this is discussion forum, these events are a daily occurance and related to drunk driving... another poster will pop up and state that it was becasue of speeding etc etc... We're all ruled by our prejudices... you are ruled by your prejudice that you think everyone else is prejudice...

Indeed... though I'm only going off two encounters... and as we all know mileage varies significantly over here... So I'm not going to stand up and state my understainding of iStudo policy as 100% fact - but what I woud suggest, is anyone purchasing from such a store to double check what happens if an item is defective. Its probably still better than getting home and finding out then... but best still, pay 'after' they check if you can get away with it.... Bought a TV last week (PowerBoy at homePro)... Paid, expected to 'take it home'... then they wanted to check it... I forgot to ask what would have happened if it was faulty - but again, its odd that the process is to take payment then check rather than the other way round.
-
No.. thats not true... I've purchased times from iStudio before and asked the very question... If an item is defective, you've already purchased it - they just help with the warranty process That said: a few years ago purchased the iPhone 13 from iStudio in Thonglor J-Avenue - and they didn't 'test it'... I walked out with the unopened phone (as after asking, there was no point in them checking) Recently I purchased a 'power bank' (iStudio K-Village, Rama IV) - my phone was nearly out of battery and I needed urgent charge so asked them to check (it came with 50% charge) - asked then, again, what would have happened if it was defective, they said, they'd send it for repair / (meaning start the warranty process). My experience differs based on the questions I've asked them - is why I don't buy from iStudio (unless desperate for an item as I was the charger) - perhaps something was lost in translation the both times I asked - so I can't be certain, but I'm sure enough not to want to shop there. Wash rinse reapeat - you keep saying that, but thats not my experience... hence the process to check that it works is somewhat moot... Again - something may have been lost in translation, I could be wrong as its not exactly a 'frequent occurance' that I get something from iStudio.... Your suggestion of how this plays out is far more logical - but, I've made this mistake of thinking logic takes precident enough times not to make assumptions.
-
You make valid points... they'd be a lot more 'effective' if the policy included 'swapping the phone' for one that does not have an issue, if an issue is found. But, as I highlighted earlier in the thread, when they 'test' the phone, you've already paid (in most cases, but not in the case of the Op)... and if they find an issue, then that phone is yours, so iStudio will assist you though the 'warranty process' to send it to apple to get it fixed. Thus: I'm not acutally sure of the reason for iStudio checking the phones.

When was that important in this thread? C'mon Gottfrid - t'was you who kicked off that very facet of the discussion... (quote below). Many myself included... use WiFi as our data usage is heavy and we travel a lot... My plan 10 GB is actually free, or rather its part of the 'house' TV and Internet Set up (one Mobile Phone line is included).... I often go over 10 GB if I'm out a lot... thus I use WiFi when I can... ... There is also the issue of my Phone Automatically loging into True WiFi when out and about in Bangkok, annoying as its quite slow !!! and, as I think about the comments made by others I don't want to log into such networks that really are quite unknown. I think your suggestion of a 'second secure' phone and a 'user' is a good one... perhaps things have come to that. I have a second phone for work... which I use 'only' for work - (as work have access to it - though I'm not sure to what extent - and I don't want them to read some of the messages I sent to the utter idiots on this forum !!!)... A 3rd phone for 'banking securty' seems like overkill... But, how far do we need to take this when there are so many scammers around ? ... as another poster pointed out... Am I paranoid, or am I not paranoid enough ? ... what digital footprint to we leave, cookies, passwords, pishing risk ?... and worse still 'spear pishing' is now a thing. Its starting to make sense to have a dedicated 'financial device'...

As far as 'activation' is concerned - I imagine its very much the same with Andoid products... none need a 'carrier' activation, they just require to be turned on and used (i.e. any SIM inserted (or e-SIM) to be used).
-
Floccinaucinihilipilification - Thats a new word for me... and I completely agree with you !!! This is the longest word I know... Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia !! As far as application to Gamma's Post - I apply the term 'sesquipedalian loquaciousness' !!!
-
I don't think Thailand has 'carrier locked phones' at all. So from that perspective, in this is quite different from Carrier locked Phones in the US that many may be familar with. I recall that the Carrier phones in the US don't (or didn't) have a SIM tray. If buying a phone here through a 'Carrier Promo' - you can theoretically use the phone with any SIM, travel to a different country switch SIMs or swtich to a local SIM of a different service provider, however - you are still locked into paying the 'contract' with the initial provide.
-
What to you mean by 'activated' ???? Phones directly from apple are the same as phones directly from iStudio... they need to be turned on and a brief set up process takes places - you can then 'install your profile from back up' or 'installed your profile directly from your currnet phone'... Its the same with iPads and Apple Computures. Nothing to do with that - they're just checking that the thing functions, powers up, WiFi works, no damaged pixels on screen etc... Its the same as HomePro opening and turning on your TV before you take it from the store... the difference is that we don't do our internet banking on our TV - thats the issue the Op had being paranoid that the person doing the 'checking' may have covertly installed malware.

There are no simple answers with you - you gaslight and twist any response to justify your agenda that drink driving is acceptable . Ignored - Dumb baiting and twisting of previous comments.
