2 Polish women apologise for sunbathing in Chiang Mai temple
richard_smith237 replied to webfact's topic in Chiang Mai News
Visit the grounds of Canterbury Cathedral on a sunny summer day and you'll se exactly that... In my home town which is very pretty, there a church with lovely sprawling grounds, people picnic there and sun themselves, shorts and tank tops in the summer not an uncommon sight at all.... So... Churches and Cathedrals - yes... Mosques, well.... of course not - but with these attitudes its seems its those levels of extreme conservatism where some of society wish for us all (and Thailand) to be heading. -

They 'weren't dealing with the authorities'.... 'authorities were sanctimoniously dealing with them'.... i.e. they weren't called to a police station... the police went to them... It took 4 Police to visit what appears to be the accommodation they were staying (guest house?)..... -
Your opinion of eradication of dogs

Valid point - Dogs definitely have their place and that place is in society.... Its the dangerous and stray dogs that can be an issue - its this issue which needs a resolved in Thailand. -

I haven't read all the replies... BUT.. IMO the solution is simple. 1) All Dogs must have a collar identifying the Owner. 2) The owner is legally responsible for the dog and any financial damage / compensation as a result of their failure to secure the dog. 3) Dogs consider 'dangerous breeds' should be banned (simplification there - but developed nations can be followed on this one). 4) Dogs found on the street without a collar are not pets, they are 'wild' and should be removed. This will be a very unpopular opinion amongst dog lovers, but I often see mangey soi dogs scavenging and suffering. This will be a very unpopular opinion amongst 'responsible' lovers of dogs others consider dangerous, but unfortunately the side is let down by the unresponsible owners. -
You do not give details of the incident or a view of where the blame lies. It can therefore be assumed, from the penalty, that the poor souls who lost their lives were at fault. That depends on how bias your Thai Apologist attitudes are... It could also be assumed that Thailands justice system is horrifically unequal... As the question earlier... "what if she had been a Cambodian cleaner? or Thai noodle seller?".... But, I also agree - there needs to be details included in the above 'killed 2 french customers' comment for us to accurately evaluate the balance. Obviously this next comment can easily be contested, but, my 'speculation' is that had this incident involved a tourist or a poor Thai the attention would obviously be less as would the penalty.

How to negotiate repairs in no-fault crash
richard_smith237 replied to cheeryble's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
Thanks for the correction (I was getting mixed up between Compulsory 'Por-Ror-Bor' and 3rd Class insurance)... That highlights why we all need 1st Class insurance (even on older cars if we can get it)... because no one else considers financial risk if they cause an accident... I suspect the attitude is.. no one can take money I don't have, ergo the utter irresponsibility on the roads. -
You really are funny. You did over egg the response... >>>>> aren't 'some' boarding passes on your phone... which evolved to... >>>>> So hold everyone up at Immigration.... Most people have their phone on an in their pocket by the time they reach immigration - IF a boarding pass is on a phone and people know they have to present it, it takes as long to show it as it does to show the paper pass... Hardly the colossal inconveniencing delay you are making it out to be with your hyperbolic exaggeration... (you can avoid the next step of 'whatifery' about batteries being drained etc - that debate is just being silly).

I've never heard of the phrase 'outrage farming' before... BUT, IMO this is exactly what it is... The more the media run with these 'non-stories' the more society responds and looks out for such stories thus feeding the medial troll. I have to make further comment here as people always want to take comments out of perspective. I firmly believe people (whether foreign or native) should behave in a manner respectful of their surroundings, those around them, their environment - I also believe the issues we've seen in the news recently are 'insignificant' and hardly warrant the national media attention placed... -

The issue is with the media , they should focus on other stories and not report on any and every story (non story) that involves foreigners . Although I suppose that the media focus on foreigners because of the interest the stories receives from other foreigners Agreed... though I suspect the media focuses on such stories (involving foreigners) because it triggers a nationalistic attitudes and garners further attention. What seems a little concerning is this... [Officers have also encouraged Thai citizens to report any instances of inappropriate behaviour by foreigners by contacting them through the 1155 hotline].... Surely the message should be 'report any instances of law breaking and antisocial behavior from anyone'... the instruction to specifically 'look out for and report instances involving foreigners' is clumsy at best, but IMO indicates a dash of xenophobia which IMO is more distasteful than the initial faux-pas. -

The efforts spent in Thailand to 'single out' the low hanging fruit meanwhile corruption and genuine moral destitution run rife is wholly telling of the underlying juvenile nature of Thai society. I don't want to Thai bash, but I can't see news such as this as anything other than pathetic, almost virtue signalling from a country in which lawbreaking and corruption is endemic and considered normal. I do of course object to anyone offending cultural sensitivities, but this really is the very thinnest end of the wedge of behavior that could be considered inappropriate here (from Thai's or foreigners)... I guess the more offending issues are such a norm they're not newsworthy... ...But, stand-back and look at the picture... Its ok to blast through red lights, not stop for pedestrians, have no consideration for disabled people etc, but watch the (apparent) outrage at the mistake made by two girls in shorts and a tank top laying in the sun in an area they shouldn't.- 104 replies

It must be the way you are dressed... (kidding of course - couldn't resist... it seems every time on this forum someone mentions different treatment another mentions dress code !!) Your response highlights how important it is that we all hold on to our boarding passes - I'll definitely ensure I'll keep hold of mine, I'll probably be asked for it on my next entry now !!
-
Yes I've also have been in and out 3 to 4 times every year and they've been asking for the boarding pass since they stopped the tm6. I haven't entered 1 time in the last 2 to 3 years where the boarding pass was not asked for on arrival Wow - its incredible out experiences vary... All at Suvarnabumi Airport ? I was asked for my boarding Pass once (but that was arriving in the middle of Covid - it was the person at the MoPH counter who ask so my assumption is that they wanted it to map proximity to any positive cases... other than that... never.

It seems the Op is somewhat reticent to pull the trigger to get to the 'next stage' for fear that the website will swallow his air-miles and he'll lose them... ... Op just has has to straighten his back and take that step...

Because you are on the Awards Page - its not telling you how much you have, its telling you how much it will 'cost you' (in cash and miles). That page is telling you you will need 85000 miles + £409 in taxes. As you don't have 85000 miles the transaction will not go through. It appears that you are trying to use the Cash+Miles option - but the page you have arrived on is the Awards Option which is different. The Thai Airways web-page is very clunky... I may be mistaken - but, I think for the Cash+Awards flights (which is a relatively new thing), you log in to TG with your ROP details (membership) go through the booking process, put in all your details and ROP details... I think then, when it gets to the payment page you offset the cost with miles (I've not done it on TG but thats exactly the way it works with Emirates - hopefully someone in TG has copied this system). Nothing will be subtracted from your account until you put in your card details for final payment anyway, so it doesn't hurt to go that far in the process. Alternatively, call Thai Airways and discuss with them exactly what you want to do and if its possible. - Give them your ROP number. - They'll be able to tell you if you can use your 40,000 Miles to contribute and pay the rest in cash.

This was discussed in a thread recently.... Of course, as it could be requested its most definitely sensible to ensure you keep your boarding pass on your possession just in case its required... ... But, when you say "they have been asking for boarding passes......".... [they - assuming immigration] - have you been asked to present your boarding pass at the Immigration counter along with your passport upon arrival ? I'm in and out regularly.. entering about 8 times a year and have never been asked... I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I'm just curious how frequent this request may be.

Yup... Sites like that save a lot of leg work when looking for a car... Other options of course are going direct to the Merc and BMW showrooms themselves and seeing if they have a selection of 'approved second hand' models (I believe BMW call it 'Premium selection') - they'll be more costly than a private or 'tent' sale, but come with a few months warranty at least (if not already with BSI etc).

Probably help if you divulge who told you this. It doesn't have the same gravitas when he mentions... "While sat at the Cockatoo bar an ex special forces operative with the right contacts informed me that........."

The one that surprises me out of those is 'Mid Dec' (if outgoing - BKK >> LHR) - perhaps thats just before the International Schools breakup and the mad 'Christmas Exodus'....

As mentioned we used the phone each time when trying to book... Tier status seemed to make no difference (although we're silver) unless they hold 'Award seats back for Gold Members'... ... I'm wondering, at what time of year were your flights (and destination)... I suspect that all seats were taken on the dates we wanted flights because it was peak periods of travel.. i.e. Summer and Christmas school holidays (to UK) and Feb half term break to Japan... I Imagine it to be easier to secure an award seat for a mid-march flight Dubai for example.... The issue I have with TG on this (just in case people haven't guessed by now !!!)... is that TG limit the Award Seat availability on flights whereas (some) other airlines do not. And this list of complaint ROP Miles keeps growing - over the years the Miles have devalued - at one point a few years back they halved when the the miles required to fly from x to x doubled... Miles recently 'devalued this year too' as more miles are required this year than last for the same destinations.
