Could it be some sort of liability insurance attached to the car.... ... i.e. it will pay for damage to someone else’s property, but not the car itself. It's then up to the insurance company to go after the ‘illegal’ driver to recover costs, no ? Isn’t this what the Government insurance is also for ?
-
It opens an interesting point... In other threads the matter of Driving licences, International driving Permits, Thai licenses etc have all been discussed... One point always pops up - that is the potential for insurance not to pay out if there is any minor indiscretion in licensing... Its even been mentioned that if you are here longer than 90 days the IDP is no longer valid etc... Thus... from an insurance perspective - whats the point in getting a licence at all ???? May as well just stick to our home licences and not bother !

Electric plane manufacturer takes off, receives worldwide orders
richard_smith237 replied to Scott's topic in World News
I recall speaking with a Thai guy a few years ago who owned some massive solar farms ‘up country’... He had recently ‘pulled out’ and scrapped everything after the government stopped the subsidies - I don’t know much more about it, but it was a very interesting conversation. However in short, the farm at that time (about 6 years ago) became non-profitable. I guess those fields of solar panels were recycled somewhere. -
oooohhh.... I’m feeling the seeds of another ‘Good guys in bad guys out’ campaign starting to sprout.... Big Joke himself must be tingling in anticipation of an other announcement, yet another crack-down... after all the last one is only 10 days old !!! Or... will they announce that this is the fruit of the latest ‘crackdown against overstayers’ ? https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/crime/big-joke-orders-crackdown-on-foreigners-who-overstay-in-thailand

The Pitbull owners will be salivating over a potential response here about how the Police wouldn’t be able to raid the house in the first place if the dog was a beloved Pittie and not a placid Labrador.... But then Mateas could have simply sent a photo of the dog as a threat and have avoided this whole drama !!!

All a bit silly but a very ‘Thailand’ experience, especially if in an area with limited exposure to Westerners. What I suspect is really going on here is that they have no idea what the actual requirements are so they are throwing everything out there to put you off. Someone on this forum has a list of requirements for the Yellow House Book (Thai and English - I’ve seen it posted on one of these Yellow House Book threads before). IF you can get hold one one of these lists and meet the requirements on that list then perhaps you may have greater success. The requirement to have the village head there is ridiculous - but you do need a Thai Witness (we used my MiL). ------- When I applied for the Yellow Tabien Baan my Wife went to the Amphur office first to ask the requirements (took a photo copy of my Passport and Visa - I was away at work at the time). My Wife was told on the spot - my Visa is not a real Visa, they won’t process the Yellow Book !!! Yes.. we were getting the runaround. When I returned to BKK we went back with my Passport, showed the Visa, again, not a real Visa !!! We asked them how I entered Thailand then !!!... If its a fake visa perhaps they should call the police, meanwhile I’ll call friends in Immigration to Confirm with her Supervisor that the visa is genuine !! Change of tune... OK.. I was given a list of requirements which included MFA Certified translation of the Embassy Verified Copy of my Passport... (I assume this is to ensure there is no mistake on the spelling of the Name... Although I was already registered with the Amphur on the Marriage Documents - its where we go to get the Kor Ror 2 & 3 from, so they already have our records, but I’m not about to argue that logic-disconnect with them)... We were told we needed an appointment... Next week?.. No, first appointment in 2 months !!!... Silly pish-taker... they really didn’t want to be doing this task which made me dig in a little more ! Two months later I found out why.... it took approximately 2 hours of what appeared to be solid paper-work (a lot of papers)... This is exactly why they don’t want to be doing this - its lot of work for the Amphur officer and its free !!!

IF the antibiotics worked, you had a bacterial infection not a viral. Its of course possible that the viral infection led to an additional complication of a bacterial infection in the lungs... but Antibiotics is not going to work on the Covid virus itself.

Yes... you’ve been off topic all thread.... IF you ran a restaurant and advertised your sandwich 99 baht, and IF there was anyone who wanted to eat it and came to your restaurant, and you told them, the 99 baht one wasn’t available, but the 250 baht one is.... Their irritation would be perfectly understandable. There... On topic ! You can now go back to learning about manners in Thailand !!!

Outstanding hypocrisy.....

Agreed... Its a government issue, but no one in the government or a position of decision making power on a national scale cares enough to do anything about the soi dog issue. Ultimately, this requires a solution involving people who are prepared to do the things most of us do not want to do. There are too many strays and not enough places to ’take them in’... Additionally, you are not taking these ’soi dogs in’... You are simply feeding them and allowing them to run around your area... Can you feed 200 dogs ??... will your area be safe when they become territorial and aggressive because they can’t get enough food ?... There are stray dogs in city centres, in the Soi’s and Sub-Soi’s.... we hear them barking and howling... The city is no place for a dog. What do people do outside of their ‘high walled private area’ ???... they still have to step over the stray laying outside the front of a 7-11. Go to the beach... In some area’s my child cannot play because there are aggressive stray dogs. I know you believe the dog has more of a right than humans to be wherever they are because you seem to believe that this is the dogs ’natural habitat’ and we are not part of nature.... but the reality is, these dogs are also a product of human intervention (breeding) and thus it is up to us to control their numbers so they don’t present a risk to our children. You have used how humanity has a detrimental impact nature to justify the rights of ’soi dogs’ but you have muddied the waters bringing in a separate issue... Dogs are here because we are, it is therefore our responsibility to control their existence. I think this is where you and I may differ - I’m prepared to go to extreme measures to protect children all over Thailand from any attack and would argue that ALL dogs wear an identifying collar. Any stray without a collar is removed (and euthanised - harsh, but this issue requires a harsh solution). OR... Any stray dog without a collar is spayed (un realistic as its more expensive). And the owner of any dog with a collar found unrestrained on the streets faces a fine, or their dog is removed. A very harsh solution, but sometimes the softly softly approach does nothing to protect our children.

Electric parking/handbrakes
richard_smith237 replied to JaiMaai's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
What could possibly go wrong with that? LOL. Ok... what could possibly go wrong with that ??? It is any less safe than a Handbrake and cable ? IF the parking e-brake requires electric power to release it and the battery dies etc.. the car isn’t going anywhere anyway, without electric power... So.. I’m not sure what could go wrong unless you’re implying some ‘power surge’ could disengage the e-brake ??? -
Assimilation with Thai Culture

While ignoring the ‘possible’ venom in your post there is an element of truth... ... not to the ‘developed superiority’ but in general to the shift in underlying mental process in those Thai's who have lived overseas. While living in Thailand and other countries outside of our home nation allow (most of) us to see the world through an alternative lens, the same can be said of Thai’s... While we may return to our home countries having learned to ‘let things go’... Thai’s may well return to Thailand and look at things through a more critical eye. Similar can also be said of ‘mixed marriage’... I have learned follow my Wife’s lead and not take issues out of my control too seriously... Meanwhile, my Wife has also learned not to accept some of the ‘silly stuff’ which unfolds around us... Perhaps a degree of Westernisation has slipped into the underlying attitudes of my Wife, whereas an element of ‘extra tolerance’ has slipped into my own underlying attitude. I suspect thats both partial de-assimilation and partial assimilation for both my Wife and I. -
True its bread plus a couple of cheap toppings. That depends on the Pizza of course... Quality pizza requires quality ingredients and wood fired pizza oven... The ovens are costly to make or buy... but that aside, the ingredients and time required to make a good pizza vs the type of pizza pictured (earlier in this thread) are not the same... ... it may be called pizza - but its not the same pizza... Additionally... Toppings vary... from quality cheese, quality tomatoes... there is even a significant difference between rubbish and quality pepperoni... This... If I just want ‘bread plus a coupe of cheap toppings I’ll have a ham and cheese toastie !!!... But if I want Pizza... I’ll have something such as Massilla Pizza... ...or even Pizza Mania... But thats Bangkok. There must be some excellent Pizza restaurants in Pattaya too... But... for 99 Baht, my exceptions would be so low I’m not interested... That said, this thread is not about the quality of Pizza being served..... Its about what appears to be either deliberate false marketing by the restaurant to get people in the door... Or a clumsy mistake by the restaurant to continue marketing an expired promo.

This is Thailand, not Australia. Get used to it. Silly response... theres a valid point in there. In other countries there are Unfair Trading laws in place which protect the consumer for a reason. In Thailand such similar laws do not exist... We could (and do) just deal with it, after all, its not a big deal, is it ???, or is it ????.... IF I see a promo advertised, travel to a restaurant that then executes the ‘Bait & Switch’ telling me that promo is no longer available, its false advertising and its wasted my time. Imagine a large group of friends book a table for 10 for a 1000 baht per head meal... then once everyone arrives and is seated they are told the meal is 2000 baht each... Extreme example?.. perhaps... but it highlights the issue of ‘bait and switch’... Personally, in similar circumstances I just move on and walk away and of course not bother making an aseannow post about it as I’d face a number of asinine ‘if you can’t afford it.... ‘ type posts... But... I understand people can get irritated by this misleading behaviour.... Its tantamount to the restaurant calling its customers suckers and just getting them there, they’ll be too weak to go elsewhere once they find out the real price.

And you could be sued in Thailand under Thailands Defamation laws. Of course, the optics of such a response are so poor that no self respecting international hotel chain would respond in this juvenile revengeful manner, they’d accept the criticism, learn from it and thank the American for his candid feedback. This exact scenario occurred just over two years ago.... an American was sued by a hotel in Koh Chang after leaving a negative review on Trip Advisor. He [the American] was arrested and spent a handful of days in Jail. If I’m not mistaken the case was dropped only after TripAdvisor agreed to remove the review, and only after the American apologised to all staff for the review and to Thailand’s Tourism Authority. https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/expats/koh-chang-resort-sues-american-over-bad-review This is the TripAdvisor page for the hotel in question - note the warning at the Top of the page. https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g580110-d594766-Reviews-Sea_View_Resort_Spa_Koh_Chang-Ko_Chang_Trat_Province.html

Assimilation with Thai Culture
richard_smith237 replied to Non Immigrant's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
I haven’t said you ‘should’... I also agree that we can easily play the ‘farang card’ and get away with our social misgivings. Speaking Thai is welcomed, although Thai’s understands and don’t mind if you don’t - the same can be said of the Wai... it is welcomed but not a unconditional requirement for foreigners as it is for Thai’s. -
That last 2 sentences are very important. I believe the first one is wrong, though. Even if you're right, by Thai defamation laws it doesn't matter, to what I understood. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, please. Correct... Thailands defamation laws are concerned with intent rather than fact. A BBC journalist (Jonathan Head) faced 5 years in prison for factually reporting on a fraud. An Activist (Andy Hall) was sued by a Thai Fruit company after accusing (and proving) sub minimum wage and slavery by the company - the case was thrown out of court based on a technicality.

I can pay 200 baht. Im not giving money to liars. Advertise 99 baht give it or throw sign in bin. Last night i ate salmon on the beach. 189 baht. No lies on sign. I'm with you on this one.... I was taking the pish out of the posters who’ll argue the price and completely miss the point (as many often do on these sorts of threads).

Assimilation with Thai Culture
richard_smith237 replied to Non Immigrant's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
You’ve made an illogical assumption that they don’t appreciate the effort. Its human nature in any culture for people to appreciate efforts to be respectful. It is not an astronomical leap of logic to recognise that Thai’s also appreciate it when we are polite with them. -
OK... we got there !!!.... ????

"if you can’t afford 200 baht for a pizza you really have to question what you are doing here”... OK, OK... so I don’t mean that at all.... But isn’t that the kind of reply such a topic would usually attract ??? I guess we nearly got there...
