  1. One of the issues that existed with the old 500 baht departure tax is that people would arrive at the airport for their departing flight without any Thai money.... It created a huge inconvenience. So... What happens on arrival when Tourist arrive without any Thai Baht ??? There is no ATM Air-side.... So what happens next ?... do they accept card payment ? As always, Thailand introduces a plan and completely overlooks the important details which will significantly impact the ease of arriving.
  2. That was an airport Tax.... initially 500 Baht for international departures and 30 Baht for domestic. They simply add that to the ticket these days, I believe it is now 800 baht. Realistically - Is this going to be used for Tourists who can’t pay their medical bills ??? I can just see the $$ in the eyes of those who stand an opportunity at fuelling some money their way - This is Thailand, we just know a huge amount is going to get skimmed off the top.
  3. You’ll take a hit if you don’t sell privately. The dealerships will / may offer you a ‘trade in price’ but they’ll skin you alive on price. I’ve asked in the past and have been amused at the extent of lowballing. Private car sales (called ‘tents’ in Thailand) will also offer below market value but tend to be hassle free. You’ll get lowballed again, but not as badly as the dealerships. IMO - the best way to sell the car for the best price is FaceBook market place. You’ll get lowball offers from chancers, ‘tents’ will also call up and offer you daft prices etc.. IF you price your car properly, it will sell. You can get a good idea of what to price the car at on one2car.com Realistically its worth about 650,000 to 700,000 baht. https://www.one2car.com/en/cars-for-sale/mazda/cx-3/year-2021
  4. One of the reasons I can think of is that the don’t want the journey back & they prefer to remain local. I guess its an individual decision by the driver. There is also a difference between GrabCar and GrabTaxi - its the same APP.. but you can specify a car (i.e. someones private car) rather than a Taxi.... With GrabCar you’ll get a better vehicle (in most cases, but could end upon with a tiny little Mazda 2 (The App will tell you what kind of car you are getting and you can cancel if you don’t want that car). As another poster mentioned booking privately - IMO thats a much better option. Using a service recommended by posters on this forum.
  5. Do we need to be at the scene to identify that the lady ran slowly over a person in the road in broad daylight ? - there is no mitigating circumstance here, she make a fatal mistake either through inattention or through poor eyesight etc... The guy shouldn’t have been there, but he was - that in no way or form removes any blame or fault from the person who failed to look where they were driving.
  6. No it can’t - It can happen to someone not paying attention, not looking where they are going. IF it happened to me, its because I wasn’t looking where I was going in broad daylight...
  7. Can’t you plug it into either of the Apps and it’ll tell you ? i.e. I just plugged it into BOLT and its quoting ±1500 baht... .. all if this depends on the driver being prepared to take the journey.
  8. How could that be? N95s are perfectly able to filter viral particles. What is your expertise, if you have one, that might be relevant? They don’t quite filter the individual ‘virus particles’.... they filter the aerosol and water-vapour which can carry a virus. As you indicate - N95 masks are clearly better, but when worn for any length of time incredibly uncomfortable. On the other hand, standard surgical masks are pretty ineffective at protecting the wearer, but serve as a ‘community measure’ protecting a lot of others from your own expelled aerosol when talking, coughing etc if in the event you are carrying something. IMO - the social norm should be.... if you have a cold wear a mask when out and about, but that relies on people being considerate of others.
  9. thats obvious but with my friend when they seen the picture of a moped on his home car licence they assumed it meant he was licenced to ride a motorbike when in reality it only allows a 50cc moped, when we arrived home my friend asked...what does this motorbike licence allow me to do? I said it mean you can go and buy a 1000cc motorbike today and ride legally, he replied but i have never ridden anything with 2 wheels apart from a bicycle. IDP is of no relevance anyway (when converting a UK licence)... the DLT accept a UK driving licence and will transfer whatever endorsements there are (i.e. car / motorcycle) and clearly don’t pay much attention... they see the silhouette of a motorcycle on the endorsements side (as posted above) and thats enough.... Its a mistake on their (DLT’s) part, but I’m not complaining.
  10. Some people want their hand-held and worry the process is convoluted and unnavigable for a non-Thai speaking foreigner.... Its not as if they are turning up for a driving licence and get sent for a colonoscopy !!!.... there’s not a lot that can go wrong, but they worry anyway. Others may be on a fine time-line and hope that the agents can help them jump the queues etc, which is possible.
  11. At that cost its surely worth doing it yourself.... 6-6.5k per licence is a great little earner for someone !
  12. Because that's what I've read everywhere and even been told on this forum. Why would there not be an application form to fill in? Why would there have to be an application form to fill in ??? I’ve renewed my licence a handful of times and obviously applied from new the first time - there was never a form involved. Anyway, forget the idea of filling in a form before you go there... No form is needed at all. That’s at DLT Area 3 in Bangkok, perhaps its different in other provinces with each individual office having different rules / process.
  13. Your home country ?.... If its the UK you may get away with it if you have a driving licence with the motorcycle endorsements AM and A....
  14. A valid point.... I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve seen road workers on the right handside of a three lane city street (i.e. Sukhumvit, Rama IV, Petchaburi Rd etc)... with their back to traffic oblivious or careless of approaching traffic which has to brake or swerve..... Someone on their phone and thats it... Frankly I’m surprised we do not read of more injuries to road workers. Conversely, in the UK the road itself is closed for weeks with KM’s of cones while two days work is carried out.
  15. Seems you are on the wrong web-page... This is a discussion forum. IF you want the news, go to https://www.nationthailand.com There was a video.... Do you lack critical ability to draw an opinion ?
  16. The same happens with the Police Check-points.... Sometimes just around the corner or over the blind brown of a hill... Any queueing traffic is at serious risk of getting ‘rear-ended’.... There is very clearly a complete and total absence of consequence here... people just do what they want without any thought to the danger or risk they may place themselves or others at.... thinking from the perspective of someone else is simply not a concept. In this case - Did the painter think... 'I’m at danger here ?’.... It must have crossed their mind because there was the guy ‘watching out’... So did the guy watching out, think.... ‘IF I go to the bathroom, I’ll leave the painter alone and he’ll be in danger?’..... of course not... neither of the workers thought - but this is Thailand and this is where Thailand fails. Workers all over the world tend to ignore their own safety, it is down to the supervisors and management to regulate and enforce a safety culture - this happens far less in Thailand than our home countries regardless of how many ’safety first’ signs we see around... That said: The driver of the car is still 100% at fault... How can she not see a person in the middle of her path ?.... it could have been a child.
  17. Can’t make this s#i£ up..... as if its bad enough one incident is occurring everyone has be on extreme alert for other lunatics who should know better... ... this could have been so much worse... I wonder how many lives are taken each year by these lunatic racing in pickups with lights to the scene of an accident.
  18. So very tragic - died saving his wife. A horrific, and yes, avoidable incident - what happened to going to a disused car-park ? I know I know... 20/20 hindsight, monday morning quarterbacking etc... but really... she couldn’t drive so the husband gets her to blackout infront of a khlong ? - So many people around the world and here in Thailand seem not to carry any concept of consequence.
  19. Not quite... in ‘any civilised country there should not be someone in the road’..... this was not a main road, it was an entrance way where pedestrians can be expected.... it could have been a child walking across.... I do agree that there should have been warning signs etc... for the safety of the worker - so there was a massive failing at that aspect, but, this is also Thailand, safety is a low priority in the minds of many. The lady still managed to drive into and over a person in broad daylight - there really is no one else to blame but her.... the deceased contributed to his own demise by placing himself ‘in the line of fire’, however, the lady is still fully at fault for not seeing him and stopping.
  20. The primary one being not looking where she was going !!! There are no mitigating circumstances... Not expecting someone to be in an entrance way is not a sufficient excuse.... its not as if the deceased was sat down in the middle of the motorway.
  21. So your take-away hypothesis is that most Wealthy people are unintelligent, ergo most poor people are intelligent... ??? With logic such as that are you enjoying driving around in your Bentley ???
  22. Exactly - getting a Thai DL is one of the much easier things to do within Thai bureaucracy. BUT... IF an agent can ‘queue jump’ and get someone on a fine time line in ahead of the curve and avoid on the day queueing then I can understand someone making that choice - they still need to be present though the process and take the ‘in-room tests’ and watch the video etc...
  23. Not that I’m aware of at all.... Been here about 25 years... Married for 14... Wife (Thai) has never sent or received a Wedding card... I don’t recall any cards being sent full stop, not even commiseration on funerals etc.... The only thing ‘close’ are wedding invitation cards... That said, mileage may vary... things may vary across the country, even within Bangkok. As jwest10 mentioned.... Wife gets a plenty of FaceBook messages when she posts the yearly wedding anniversary announcement... but thats about it.
  24. This implies that another resident can simply levy an accusation without proof and a fine will be issued... Is this what happened?
  25. As pointed out by Crossy without SHOUTING 1.5 hours before you...
