  1. This has probably been asked before. Does anyone know if Bank of America has an office in Bangkok, its own ATMs, or partner bank ATMs in Bangkok? I would be happy to get an address or phone number for any of these?

I can use other ATMS but the charges are higher. I think Bangkok of America has a program with certain banks that offers reduced ATM fees overseas. Does anyone know of this?

  2. You are certainly wrong about "the majority". Describe this majority please. And how do you get your information? Are you in Thailand talking to the majority or looking at your computer? Does the number of farmers I have connections to represent the "one class"? Since you are so upset about 'racism' what's your background?

As for corruption, there's way too much here in Thailand. What's happening now is called people power. These events are inspirational giving hope to the majority that I know. The TRT is looking for bullshit explanations for all its abuses; Now that's progress.

  3. It's funny how rightwing people and communists go hand in hand. They both accuse the average people of being from the other side.

The current political situation wasn't lead by the Democrats. Thailand's problems are a result of Thaksin not the people. Do you get that. This situation didn't drop in from outer space and its not some grand scheme of the Democrats. So give up the idea.

I just don't understand how anyone could support a corrupt dictator? But there are people who would die for Hitler. And there are people proud that Amelda has 3,000 pairs of shoes. And many people thought Suharto's family and friends owning everything in Indonesia was good. Some people think rape is good. Some people think kiddy porn is good. Some people think beating their wives and kids is good. I guess there are people out there who are in your camp and 'knowingly' will support a corrupt leader.

  4. I work at a school and have done it for years and years. I make very little for a farang I guess about 30K a month. Some months if I feel like getting off my arse I make up to 50K. If I worked hard I could make 60 k every month. I'm just to lazy to work mights and weekends. Right now I only work teach about 15 classroom hours per week. My life is pretty easy and any diligent person could do a lot better than I am. I think about my future all the time but I don't worry about it that much maybe I should. The word 'retirement' doesn't really exist for me.

Lots of foreigners teach here, but few stay forever and most that do take on extra teaching to supplement their incomes especially if they are working in government schools.

  5. I don't get it. People think 38 is going to make them choose a different place to do there business. How on earth did Thailand survive when it was 25 to the dollar? This stuff is wacky.

Seems these topics keep coming back and still I am in the dark with it all. If I get it now, I'm sure to forget it. I do believe that governments like lots of confusion in doing things because confusion = jobs. I gotta get away from the world. I just want things to be simple and work. I don't like the idea of chasing my dinero as it bounces around the room.

  6. Thaksin looked like he had seen a ghost to me. He was nothing like the person he was the night before.

Don't forget this is about corruption in office. This is the key to the protestors staying silent.

With Thaksins hand removed from the Thai media's microphone who knows what may come out over the airwaves. Don't think that the country people know all that was being said against Thaksin by the protestors. Some people will defend Thaksin as they defend their football teams. But many others will want to know why he had to step down. The truth must be heard.

For the first time in years Superman, Batman, and Spiderman aren't killed at the end of the movie. Justice has a chance.

  7. I'm wondering if anyone has a few names of hotels in korat city near the bus station which aren't too expensive. I'll be passing through and have to stop over for just one night. I will be travelling by bus so I would like to stay relatively close to the bus station. I think there might be one just across the street from the bus station but I can't remember the name. I'll be with my wife so I really don't want to stay in a dump. At the same time I'd like to keep it cheap say 500 -1250 baht. If you have a name and phone number that would be great. I've done some net searches and found a few places out in the sticks and a few in town but a ways from the bus station. I'm also looking for a basic online map of the city if there is one. If you have any links let me know. Oh, by the way the Thaipro map link just doesn't seem to come up.

  8. hubbybby, I wouldn't worry too much. There are plenty of places to shop around Bangkok. The skytrains run around the city and they aren't affected by the protests. You can get around in Taxis too. The drivers know how to get around any affected areas. There are also lots of large shopping complexes outside of the center of town. Don't worry too much.

By the way, the protests are peaceful and the people who attend them are not angry or violent types. For example, one of the protests had a fashion show with anti-Thaksinwear. So just relax and enjoy yout trip.

  9. Oh, sorry. Haven't been following ASTV. Seems like there are quite a few people coming and going in support of the protestors.

One note for those follwing this. Check out TV3 in the early morning 4-5:15 am if you are up. The newscasters at that time seem to have a different way of discussing the news. They do get into more than at 7AM. They also seem to let more clips slide through than at 7.

  10. As the people who work in the urban areas move up country over the next month for the election and Songkran more info will get to the countryside. This should have some sort of impact. At the same time if Thaksin wants to crackdown on free speech the Songkran break will be a quiet time int he city so if he plans to do anything it might happen then. Who knows which way things could go in the short term.

Another possibility is that Thaksin may decide to step down after being 'reelected' and so save face.

There's no way Thaksin is going to be looked on favorably over the next year because within the next six months the protestors information should be out to all parts of Thailand by then.

Thaksin could play Santa clause for the remainder of his time in office basically trying to wipe away the evils he has done over the years.

He has to think about his and his families future happiness. Would they rather live in Thailand labeled corrupt forever like Duangchalerm and family or move abroad.

Staying here will take a lot of brown-nosing.

  11. Seoni. you really go from confused to won over easily! ColPyat, what exactly did Chamlong do that causes you to hate him so much? He didn't come up with the plan to kill so many people in Thailand in the past few years. If you have to choose based on your thinking Thaksin is guilty of the killings. He is the head. Chamlong can't take the blame over Thaksin. Thaksin wants to keep on going. He'll certainly see more people killed. If you are against the killings you must be against Thaksin. If you are not against Thaksin then you must be for the killings. What is it? In your case the best vote for you would be a No Vote unless you are for more killings?

Why are you and your bimbo, Seoni, so proThaksin? Thaksin can't be better than Chamlong? You seem to have an agenda.

As for the students that were murdered in the past Chamlong didn't kill them. In fact all the protests in Thailand have been generally peaceful from the side of the protestors. It's always been the government which seems to do all the killing.

If you like dictatorship you might think of returning home to Burma, oh sorry Myanmar.

Why would you want a leader who will take information away form you as the current government does? Are you corrupt?

  12. Of course I am against violence and locking people up. I'm just playing the Thaksin's advocate.

Strangely some Philipinos love Marcos. Strangely some Thais love Thaksin. Strangely some Germans love Hitler. Strangely some Americans love Bush. Strangely some Iraqis love Saddam.

    I don't love anyone.

I would never choose a leader who would take information away from me.

  13. He should be booted. I've never trusted the people involved with the telcoms industry in Thailand. There has been corruption there since its inception. Nowadays poor people who make virtually nothing are spending excessive amounts of money on cellphones every year as a result of the big cellphone push in Thailand. The Telephone Organisation of Thailand should have made changes way back to make landlines affordable in Thailand but starngely they didn't. Why? A landline ten years back cost around 7,000 baht. that was before the devaluation of the baht! Strangely about a few years ago landlines dropped to around 2500 baht or so. The baht then was around 40/$1. The question is why was there such a dramatic drop in prices and why couldn't it have been done years ago? There are many other factors pointing to corruption in the Telephone Organization of Thailand and by the Government in terms of the telecom industry. I would say that generally doing nothing to improve the landline systems in Thailand resulted a telecom boom! Thaksin and others benefited from this. This seems to be Thaksin philosphy. Let everything fall apart so that the private sector can step in. The hospitals, schools, etc. Anyways that's my take on it.

    Of course, I am anti-Thaksin.

  14. Th PAD are nonviolent. They expect the governemnt to crack down on them using violence as time passes by. If the government doesn't use force the protests will continue for the rest of Thaksin's term.

    A strange note:

Hasn't Thaksin trying to get weapons out of the hands of average citizens since he has been in office? I think my relative in Isarn had to give up some kind of a cheap rifle he had to shoot birds. Anyone know about this?

  15. Generally the problems we have are small. The only two really serious problems came from topics outside daily life such as politics. Over the years she has come to understand me better. Nowadays the daily stress comes more from noisy kids rather than between us. If you don't have kids, life will change when you have them. The stress level may go up if you are someone who likes peace and quite. Also all that freedom to travel here and there will be affected by your children. So children can have an effect on daily life raising your stresslevel at times to the breaking point. If you do have kids a maid or family nearby would probably help to give you a break. Anyways 4 years in things are better.

  16. The rallies are definitely attracting some crazy people. I remember those fools in Tiananmin Square with their silly Statue of Liberty. What a bunch of kooks they were. I hope the government has locked them up for good. When you have a peaceful society with economic growth and a chance to participate in government, there's really no need to protest. And remember no democracy is perfect, even China's. If Thaksin wins on April 2, it should be considered a mandate by the majority of well-informed Thais. At that point Thaksin will have the power behind him to lock up the protestors and run this country the way he sees right just like George Bush has since his reelection. And once Thaksin wins I think that the Thai people should do something to thank him for hanging in there and fighting for them. The airport could be renamed 'Thaksin International.' And why not rename a few streets in Chiangmai for his family members. He is not an average Thai he is above average. He is at the top of the top.In addition, the government should allocate at least 2,000,000,000 baht to celebrate "democracy" in Thailand on his return as the Prime Minister. Have you got any other ideas as to how the Thai people can celebrate the special occasion of Thaksin's return?

  17. The TRT have to keep the PAD members away as they might offer information to the TRT's captives. As long as the TRT can keep the people there away from the other sides information they will always have the option of using them in some sort of extreme protest in the end. Maybe they could threaten a mass suicide if Thaksin doesn't stay in. They can join the moron that was in the paper a few days ago. Or they could use them to attack the people who don't accept the corrupt government.
