Taxation of foreighners in S/E Asia?
Srikcir replied to swissie's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Do you think resident foreigners don't, albeit not directly in the form of an income tax? For spending to sustain oneself in Thailand, 7% VAT applies to virtually every expenditure. Unlike foreign tourists, there is no refund. VAT goes into the Thai Treasury as part of the general fund. -

Another viewpoint: "The unemployment rate in Thailand has reached a nine-month high of about 2% of registered workers, as the country struggles to deal with slow economic growth and more factory shutdowns, according to the Employers' Confederation of Thai Trade and Industry (EconThai)." Delays loom for Thai-Chinese high-speed railway project
Srikcir replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
It is also four additional years of interest on the loan Prayut took from China (and other Thai/Chinese investors where applicable) to build the project. The overall cost will be upwards of 300 billion baht ($9.9 billion), equivalent to 2% of the size of Thailand’s economy in 2017. https://tdri.or.th/en/2019/03/will-thailands-chinese-high-speed-railway-be-worth-it/ In January 2015, the Chinese Government announced plans to provide loans to the Government Thailand for railway construction. Several options were offered, such as a 100 billion Baht loan through the Bank of China at an interest rate of 3% and a repayment period of 20 years, and a 2 billion Baht loan through an unnamed bank at an interest rate of 2.9% and a repayment period of 2.9%. https://china.aiddata.org/projects/38130/ In 2015 the Bank of Thailand policy rate was about 1.5%. https://app.bot.or.th/BTWS_STAT/statistics/BOTWEBSTAT.aspx?reportID=223&language=ENG Academics raised issues of default on the project but under Article 44 the NCPO junta government of PM Prayut under its absolute power authority bypassed such reviews. -
Paetongtarn Shinawatra Elected as Thailand's 31st Prime Minister
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
MFP no longer exists as an opposition party in the House. That then gives the minority PTP a majority, ie., 51%. As such the Senate cannot vote for PM if 51% vote is received in the House by party, in this case the FORMER minority PTP coalition. -

Paetongtarn Shinawatra to be Nominated as Thailand's New PM
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Who cares? Certainly not the Thai People. NIDA Poll "Political Popularity Survey for the First Quarter of 2024": When asked about support for candidates for PM: Pita 42.75%, "no suitable candidate" 20%, Thavisin 17.75%, Paetongtam 6%, Pirapan 3.6%. (some figures rounded, my bold). https://nidapoll.nisa.ac.th/data/survey/uploads/FILE-1711167362839.pdf Of course MFP no longer exists. -
Labour Budget Cuts on the Modernisation of the UK's Armed Forces

Best UK sign a peace treaty with Russia now to survive future Russian expansion and retribution against supporter of NATO and Ukraine. UK Oblast anyone? "UK military ‘couldn’t fight Russia for longer than two months" Failure to secure more funding for Armed Forces puts us at a disadvantage, warns Deputy Chief of Defence Staff. Thailand's Top 10 Longest-Serving Prime Ministers
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Incorrect according to the Constitutional Court that only recognized the Prayut only served four years (2009-2023 as PM). According to the Constitution, if a PM has served an aggregate of eight years, that person cannot run again for PM. PM Prayut was challenged in court to be ineligible to be nominated PM in the 2023 election but the CC found against the challenge. -

Disney fights Thai doctor’s death lawsuit, citing husband’s agreement
Srikcir replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
"Disney is trying to have the lawsuit dismissed" (my bold). This is called a motion for summary judgement before any trial. If Disney is correct about its alleged legal position, a judge upon review of plaintiff's rebuttal may rule in favor of the defendant without a trial. But the defendant still has appeal rights. -
PM Srettha Guilty of Ethical Misconduct, Entire Cabinet Dismissed

"Section 204 of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Thailand B.E. 2550 (2007) provided that the Constitutional Court consists of the President of the Constitutional Court and 8 Justices of the Constitutional Court, appointed by the King upon the advice of the Senate." (my bold emphasis) https://www.constitutionalcourt.or.th/occ_web/download/article/article_20170312125044.pdf Recall that the 2007 Constitution allowed only 50% of the Senate to be elected. Following the 2014 military coup that abolished the 2007 Constitution, it wrote a new constitution with 100% unelected 250 senators initially nominated by the military coup leadership but with 50 permanent senators who cannot be removed. In 2024 an unelected senate selection committee replaced the initial 200 senators through an internal "selection process." Again unelected. -

Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Aug. 15, 2024 https://theguardian.com "The biggest party in Thailand’s caretaker government PTP will meet on Thursday to choose a successor for dismissed former premier Srettha Thavisin, as it races to shore up its alliance a day ahead of a pivotal parliamentary vote on a new prime minister. Pheu Thai must now choose one of two eligible candidates – Chaikasem Nitisiri, a former attorney-general and justice minister, and its inexperienced leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra ..." -
