New Tax Rules for Expats in Thailand Spark Concern
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
So long as your foreign country has a Double Tax Treaty with Thailand. Easy to Google - there are many countries with a DTT with Thailand. But I think there may be a "glitch." (note, I am not a foreign tax expert - suggest contact with a Thai expert). The US has such a treaty with Thailand that allows Americans to deduct against their US tax obligation, the Thai tax obligation but limited to the total US tax obligation. But: 1. That may require filing a Thai tax return as proof of your Thai tax obligation as an offset to US tax obligation. 2. Your Thai tax cannot offset your US tax obligation more than 100%. US taxation has many tax allowances that may not match Thai taxation. For example, if your US tax bracket is 25% but your Thai tax bracket is 35%, difference in tax brackets between US taxable income and Thai taxable income may leave you with net Thai taxable income. -

"The case, filed by police, alleged Thaksin violated Thailand’s notoriously harsh royal insult law during an interview he gave in 2015 to the South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo." Wouldn't Thaksin's 2023 Royal Pardon be a catch-all for all his alleged crimes through to the date of the Pardon? https://www.aa.com.tr/en/asia-pacific/with-royal-pardon-thai-ex-premiers-8-year-prison-term-reduced-to-1-year/2980936 This new charge by the police on an 8-year old interview might seem in itself an act of lese majeste committed by the police as the police might appear to be disrespectful of the Pardon. Shouldn't the police need a post-2023 crime alleged against Thaksin to overcome the term of his Royal Pardon?

Something of note: The Risks of Owning Property in Thailand - The Risks of Owning Property in Thailand Under Your Thai Spouse’s Name. Protecting Your Assets https://isaanlawyers.com/the-risks-of-owning-property-in-thailand/ A common practice among expat couples in Thailand is to register property under the Thai spouse’s name to circumvent laws restricting foreign ownership of land. Expats may have invested significant funds in purchasing the property, either through direct contributions or financial support during the marriage. If the property remains under the Thai spouse’s name, the expat has no legal protection for their financial investment. There are Protective Measures to Safeguard Your Property Interests, ie., Usufruct. -

Was that a UK taxable event, ie., a capital gains tax? Sale in 2024? You make no mention of source of funds to live (ie., 180 days minimum per year) in Thailand. Thailand has passed new tax laws that can affect foreign residents living in Thailand. Big Thailand visa changes from June 1
Srikcir replied to snoop1130's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Those who seek a 'digital nomad' lifestyle can apply for the LTR visa and work legally in Thailand for as long as 10 years (first 5 years followed by a free 5 year extension) if they meet the eligibility criteria. This should change with LTR however: Insured under a health insurance covering a minimum of USD 50,000 (almost 2 million baht) vs health insurance coverage of 440,000 baht. -

Pita is available on notice. -
It was tedious but process was fully laid out. Paid online using Pay.gov without issue by a US credit card having a US billing address. I renewed my passport including payment receipt in 2022 by mail to US embassy Bangkok from Bang Khun Thian district (Rama 2). Got passport pics from Kodak shop in Central Plaza; used them in previous passport renewal. They knew all the US rules for the photos to be acceptable, including sufficient border for the picture to be stapled to application. Embassy required a 100 baht bank draft using KB (form of prepayment varied according to what bank is used) to cover its cost to mail back new and previous passports; as no one at the bank apparently never issued a bank draft before, took bank an hour to produce, even though the embassy provided what a generic bank draft looked like for that bank. The bank disagreed with the Embassy as to the name of the Embassy going on the draft. I was able to directly call the Embassy from KB to confirm for the bank the correct recipient name on the bank draft. Sent whole package by Thailand Post EMS. To verify my name Post asked for my passport which of course was I the package. I showed my Thai driver license and offered photo of my current passport held I my tablet. No problem. DHL refused to deliver the passport package, saying it didn't want responsibility if passport was lost in transit within Thailand. Going out of Thailand it would deliver the passport package. But suggested I can use DHL E-commerce online to try using DHL; but Post was a short walk nearby. Three weeks later received my new passport along with the retired passport.

Bus accident tragically kills elderly man on Chaeng Watthana Road
Srikcir replied to snoop1130's topic in Bangkok News
I have had some drivers only allow boarding by the front door. Sometimes the bus conductor will stand by the back doors to assure people only exit and not enter. Several times when side doors opened on stopping I have doors begin to close on me stepping up to enter - no bus conductor standing nearby to warn me. The inconsistency points to the need of a back door watch regardless of any driver inattention. -
