PM selection sitting this Thursday now in limbo
newnative replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
The selection definitely needs to be postponed until the correct selection process is nailed down, specifically, can a candidate's name be submitted to more than one vote.. -
Rejection of Pita’s renomination as PM ‘unconstitutional’ : Ombudsman
newnative replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
The CC needs to nail down the voting process for PM, not just for this term but for future terms. It's ludicrous, in my opinion, to only allow a PM candidate to be voted for one time. -
My Thai partner and I are forever astounded at the large number of BMW, Audi, Benz, Volvo, Tesla, Mini, and other expensive luxury models we see on the road. Most start, that's start, at over 2MB. Many are in the 3 to 4 million price range, with some even higher. Are there that many rich people, we wonder. Or, maybe too many people with too much debt. A 2023 Audi Q3 starts at $36,400 list price in the USA--before haggling. That's just about what that model is worth, in my opinion. The cheapest no haggle Q3 in Thailand starts at 2.55MB, Almost $74,000 at today's exchange rate. Is a car valued at around $36,000 in the USA suddenly worth double that in Thailand? I joke with one of my American sisters, who actually owns a Q3, that she is tooling around in a $74,000 car, even though she paid half that. We are doing ok financially and could afford a lower range luxury car but we can't see spending a lot of money on an asset that will fairly quickly just lose value. We both grew up being taught to live within our means, and that was a valuable lesson to learn, one seemingly no longer taught much. I'm sure that sounds corny and old-fashioned to some, but it's nice being debt-free. Partly that is due to living in Thailand, which has made loans and mortgages difficult, so we have paid cash for everything. I think it's sad that so many Thais are, apparently, not living within their means and are deeply in debt. That's bound to be so stressful, at least it would be to old-fashioned me.

Roof on my house is leaking, how to fix it? Photos included ...
newnative replied to AndyAndyAndy's topic in DIY Forum
This worked for us after trying many other things that did not work. As others have said, it can be difficult to determine exactly where the leak is with a tile roof. -
Rule #1. Do not sign any document that you don't fully understand, and fully agree to the terms of, especially if it is presented to you by someone who may not have your best interests at heart, like an estranged spouse. He should have demanded copies of the documents translated to the language he is most comfortable with, and signed by all the parties involved. Before signing, he also should have demanded copies of all the contracts, in both languages, signed by all the parties. Before signing, he was in the driver's seat and had the power to demand and receive what he needed in order to determine whether to sign or not. Nothing goes forward without his signature. Once he signed, he lost all power. That's a lesson we should all learn, and need to always remember.

Pheu Thai-led Coalition Firmly Opposes Amending Lese-Majeste Law
newnative replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Promise anything and get in power first. Once in power, jump off that promise boat and into a new promise boat. We've seen how short some of his boat promises last. -
PT may or may not eject FF from the coalition but that does not prevent FF members from voting for the PT candidate for PM. If the majority of FF members vote for the PT PM candidate, it's like they are still part of the coalition. What are the other parties who oppose FF, and the Senators, who also oppose FF, then going to do during the PM vote? Will they want to be seen, once again, of voting against democracy, and the will of the voters in the election? Whatever way they end up voting, it's a win-win for FF, in my opinion.

Pita says the aim must be to stop “old power” succession
newnative replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I agree. I think for many Thais, like my partner, there is finally hope. -
Pita says the aim must be to stop “old power” succession
newnative replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I find myself bemused by all the negative comments regarding Pita posted by some of the westerners on this forum, on the many threads regarding him and the election. He should have done this. He should not have done that. He's too weak. He comes on too strong. He says too much. He should compromise more. He shouldn't be compromising at all. He's too bull-headed. No, he gives up too easily. Etc., etc. Here's what happened today. My Thai partner learned that Pita was going to be in Jomtien this afternoon. Even though the weather was rainy and nasty, he got together with some of his Thai friends on the Darkside and together they drove into town to go to the Pita rally, meeting other friends there--all planned in advance when they heard Pita was coming. From the videos he took on his phone, it looked like a big, enthusiastic crowd, especially considering the bad weather. The remarkable thing is this is one of the few times in over 25 years of being with my partner that he has took it upon himself to actually go listen to a politician, here or in the US. He certainly cares about politics, about what is happening in Thailand, about the current administration, and so on. He watches the Thai news closely and follows everything. But, as much as he cares, few politicians, except for perhaps Thanathorn, have moved the needle with him. Pita definitely moves the needle for my Thai partner, and I think for a multitude of other Thais, as well. We, as westerners, can criticize this, criticize that, about him but I think he is making a much bigger impact with Thais than we may think. No matter what happens this cycle, he and the FF party are inspiring Thais, like my partner, to finally get up and participate.- 56 replies

Pita says the aim must be to stop “old power” succession
newnative replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Spot on, Pita! The first step is stopping the dinosaurs from once again taking power, by whatever means necessary. Even if that means a PT politician as the PM for now. -
5 things you love most about Thailand.
newnative replied to Lacessit's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
1. Good variety of affordable housing to rent or buy in a variety of locations. 2. Good, affordable healthcare. 3. Good weather year-round, in a safe environment. 4 Good local and expat community. 5. Good shopping, movie theaters, and airport and big city proximity, -
Many developers will sell before and during construction, and it's not necessarily a sign that they need the money to fund construction. And, it's not unique to Thailand. The developers I mentioned in an earlier post all sell pre-construction and during construction--and all have the financial resources to not depend on pre-construction money to complete a project. Many build sales offices with decorated models of some of the units so buyers can get some idea of what the finished product will look like. In some cases, buying pre-construction can allow you to make changes to the design. If I am remembering correctly, Unixx condo, by Raimon Land, allowed pre-construction buyers to choose from three different interior designs, with different floor tiles and wall accent colors. It makes no business sense that I can see to wait until a project is done and then start looking for buyers.

Pheu Thai to Seek More Support for Next PM Vote
newnative replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Yes, exactly. Promise all that, get into power, and then reject all that. The public will understand the tactics and what's actually going on. PT and FF need to start playing like the dinosaurs. It does no good to choose the high road if you never get in the driver's seat. -
Thailand Welcomes 15 Million Foreign Visitors in 7 Months
newnative replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
True, but that's always been the case. So, 39 million 'arrivals' in 2019. So far, the benchmark year for tourism in Thailand. 15 million 'arrivals' so far in 2023. When the counting system hasn't changed, it's easy to see how Thailand is doing compared to its best year of 2019. 2021, it was less than 500,000. Dismal. This year, 15 million so far with a little over 5 months to go. Not 2019 numbers but doing better. -
House Speaker Clarifies His Role in PM Vote Session
newnative replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
His decision has been roundly criticized by several of the most prominent legal scholars in Thailand. Hs incorrect decision needs to be appealed to the CC for a definitive ruling for future elections. Meanwhile, he is way too old and totally unsuitable for the job and should resign. -
Move Forward will support Pheu Thai PM candidate
newnative replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
I'm loving it. Very smart move politically by FF. By supporting PT, it forces the senators to once again either vote for or against democracy. Vote for or against the will of the voters. Once again, they will be squirming, with all the focus, mostly negative, on them. Either way they vote, FF wins. If they vote yes, FF can remain aligned with PT and work together with the other coalition partners. A PT prime minister, while not ideal, is better than any of the dinosaurs as PM. If the senators vote no and the PT candidate doesn't win, PT can always put forward another name in the next round of voting, forcing the senators once again into a squirming position. More delay is not good for the country or the economy--making the senators look even worse, and even more unpopular. Thwarting democracy over and over makes Thailand look bad--and I think the junta does care about what the world thinks of it. Again, FF wins. If the dinosaurs somehow secure the PM post, FF and PT can oppose any government initiatives they dislike, while also advancing their proposals. -
Bangkok transport’s long and bumpy journey to a common ticket system
newnative replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
I find it is an inconvenience. First, I have to carry two cards, not one. I have to keep track of the amounts I have on two cards, not one. I have to stand in line at the service desks to keep two cards topped up, not one. Both the MRT and the BTS cards are the same size and shape and the same yellowy orange color and several times in a rush I've mistakenly tried to use the wrong card going thru the turnstiles. When my partner and I use the airport rail link, even though we are carrying both cards, neither work and we have to cue up yet again to a vending machine to buy a token. -
Bangkok transport’s long and bumpy journey to a common ticket system

Working on it since 2012 and no progress. Long and bumpy indeed. -
Buying off-plan can be financially rewarding. My partner and I have bought off-plan a half-dozen times and made money on each of the deals. But, it's important to know a bit about what you're doing and do your homework. We jumped at the chance to buy off-plan at Sansiri's The Base Central Pattaya. Ditto for Centric Sea, by SC Asset, Lumpini Park Beach, Lumpini Seaview, and Lumpini Suites Makkasan in Bangkok. We passed on Sansiri's Edge project--didn't like the numbers or the project enough. You may have noticed with the above list that all the projects we bought off-plan at were by very large, name brand developers with a strong track record of completing projects. Every project we bought into off-plan got completed, and most were done early. We avoid buying off-plan from small and no-name developers.

Disruptive passengers like this--and they seem to be increasing--need to be banned from flying. Period. Put them all on a no fly database and prohibit them from flying with any airline. They endanger the safety of all the passengers and crew.

Legal experts challenge parliament’s rejection of Pita’s renomination
newnative replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I'm wondering why this isn't nailed down already. It should be black and white with no questions at this point if this is correct or that is correct. The CC should make itself useful for once and make a definitive ruling--it's bound to come up in future elections.
