In the BKK post it is mentioned that banks can check the status of an ID card if it is reported stolen or not.

That's great until someone opens an account in a mall branch at the weekend, or after 5pm when all the government staff have gone home.

If every bank checked every ID I think the District Offices would need more phone lines and more staff.

Alternatively, upgrade the system so that each ID card has a pin number, just like a bank card.

Banks could be required to allow pin changes for free at any ATM.

Unless you knew the pin number, it would make stolen ID cards useless.

Condominium act Section 19 par. 5 stipulates Bangkok as exempt, where foreign ownership can exceed 49%. At the end of the act, Pattaya is also declared as an "other local government zone" with equal status as Bangkok.

I don't remember the Condominium Act 2522 saying that. I can't even remember reading the words, "Bangkok" or "Pattaya" in the Act.

I stand to be corrected though.

Where are you getting your info from?

  3. Why don't the government add a pin number to ID cards, just like a bank card has?

To use the card for ID you would have to enter the pin number in a chip and pin machine at the bank/government office/mobile phone shop/etc.

The government could require all banks to enable free pin number changes at all ATMs.

I don't think that would be difficult - the same pin number technology is used millions of times each day anyway.

In addition, any stolen cards would be flagged up at the same time.

  4. If you want to work you will need a work permit. You will need to get a non-B visa/extension of stay as you cannot get a work permit on a retirement visa/extension of stay.

To get this the pool hall will need to be set up as a limited company, with 2 million baht of capital and 4 Thai employees paying social fund contributions.

If you want an extension of stay on the basis of working you will need to pay tax and social fund on a minimum salary of 50k per month.

If all that is possible then you can get a work permit for a managerial position, such as General Manager.

Your official job description will allow you to manage, not to do everyday tasks a Thai person could do.

Finally, consider that you can only own 49 per cent if the company (unless you are American and the company was specially set up to take advantage of this fact).

Generally speaking, it is not a good idea to go this route if all you want is somewhere cheap to live and a bit of a purpose.

You would save loads of money living elsewhere and being a regular customer instead.

One good way to check is using the numbers located in the attached photo.

I doubt if copies have them.

Means removing the wrist band as you can't see them properly with it still on.

Better quality fakes do have these numbers, although the font differs slightly.

I've always found the numbers on the date wheel (1-31) to be a better indicator. I have never seen a fake get this right.

I have Brit friend with Thai nationality.

He has told me in the past that you must leave and return to Thailand on same passport.

You must enter and leave on the same passport.

You can leave and enter on a different passport when using an airport (but not at a land border) - with the stipulation that Thai citizens should always enter and exit using a Thai passport.

Maybe I should have attached a photo to my post.

So a lot of parking lots for *motorbikes* have a simple segmented metal fence with one of the segments missing and two guys sitting in chairs, one facing incoming riders, the other outgoing riders.

For incoming riders, they are handed a simple token, and outgoing riders hand back the token.

There are no robots, cameras, RFID readers, etc. I don’t even think there is electricity.

So the explanation given in the first reply, that this token is simply to “prove” that you were the guy who parked the motorbike, seems to be the most likely one.

If you described the parking lot fully in your first post rather than your last post my reply would have been different.

The parking lot you are referring to is run by a farang who needs to employ four Thai staff to qualify for his extension of stay.

There is no point to the tokens and no point to employing the staff either.

  8. The card has a unique serial number. This is used to differentiate between users. So, for example, when you park your car in the automated car robot in Emquartier, the system uses the unique serial number to register where the robot parks your car. When you scan your card to retrieve your car, the reverse happens.

I'm sure there are various systems in use, but in Emquartier, when you press the button to dispense a card from the machine, a camera in the card dispensing machine takes a photo of your face. Another camera takes a photo of the front of the car, including the registration number.

Upon presenting your card at the exit, all photos are displayed to the operator. Whether they take any notice of them is another matter however.
