I went to the cycling track near the airport at Bangkok last night. I wanted a drink but nobody would accept cash or card payments. It was just a QR code scan.

How I can get that to work if I just have a UK bank account?

It is unfortunate, the cycling track used to have a bracelet that you use to enter the gate that you can load money into and use to pay for things within the track but they have phrased the using of the bracelet to pay for things out  now, but most shops inside there is only setup for cashless since the beginning.  SCB bank was the main sponsor of the track and they sort of trialed the bracelet payment but it went nowhere after people start using QR more

There used to be that for non cyclist visiting you can get a card from the main office that works like the bracelet and load money onto them like food court card, you can get it from either the office or there's a booth between the food stalls you can get the card from

The Thai QR code payment system has a few shortcomings, such as no options for foreigners without a Thai bank account and relying on buggy and slow banking apps. Even WeChat pay and AliPay in China can be used by foreigners, although with considerable difficulty in setting it up. But at least that system is fast - faster than taking cash, even if exact change.

The problem with being able to link a credit card to the Thai QR code payment system is that you could pay someone in cash using credit. Banks don’t want that because it creates a system where you would be paying the bank back with its own money. There’s also the issue of who would pay the transaction fees.

From the Bangkok Bank app there seems to be something called prompt pay international, and you can possibly pay from a Singaporean account using one of their banking apps.

So what it will take is for foreign banks to join the prompt pay international system. That seems unlikely.

So absent some fintech solution that is foreigner friendly, it’s going to get rocky for people without Thai bank accounts.

Japan, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Hongkong banks can use Promptpay QR to pay in Thailand now, and vice versa for Thai accounts holder going  to those countries so cross border qr are becoming more common.

QR linked credit cards seem up to each merchant to accept, as they'll be paying the usual transaction fee if their customers pay be credit card via QR, if the mechant is stupid enough to pay out someone in cash when they paid using QR credit card the burden of the transaction fee is on the merchant, regular people with just bank account can't accept QR payment using credit cards

There is really a lot to answer here and I will just give a few comments and won't respond to individual posts. Too busy...

The Channel most affected by the move to Digital in the past years is the ATM. Volumes of cash withdrawal and things like Bill Payment have dropped hugely. Some banks are just not offering ATM's and are moving to paying fees for customers should they incur them, from using other banks ATMs

As correctly stated, the Cardless ATM feature involves the App, but also the ATM system. So using a US bank ATM is VERY unlikely to work until some standard based network like VISA or UPI provides this, which is not imminent. We previously allowed AEON customers to use our ATM, now KBANK. ATM networks are expensive to rollout AND to maintain. We need staff to refresh the cash, we need to upgrade them. So leveraging this investment by pumping more volume via other Bank Apps for Cardless makes business sense, on both sides.

This should work, but if your KBANK App says the QR Code is not valid then call KBANK (please).

FYI, I still have an ATM card because I travel a lot (internationally) and I an not use CARDLESS there overseas. But in Thailand I am 100% Cardless.

So bottom line is that this will  continue to expand (I think I do not know) in terms of other banks having access to each others ATM via Cardless. Fees are something you will  need to discuss with YOUR bank. Not with us. And it should work. As I said we have done for AEON for some time already

    Thanks

I as afraid the cardless ATM was going to be a new 'lock-in' forcing customers to go to their own bank's ATM to withdraw money from apps, but now that interoperability is here it is welcomed, do you see some standards forming like PromptPay that now has some regional interoperability now

Also, If you are at liberty to disclose,

What's the uptake for withdrawal by 'Bangkon Agents' ie: at 7-11s like? I don't imagine many takers for this option in urban areas with readily access to ATMs

I don't know if this is relevant to you but a semi can use a bit of engine braking.I have no idea of autos.

On autos you have to open the throttle a bit to have any engine braking, not advised to go down big hills unless you know what you're doing

  5. price excl vat is per kg (written in thai)

689.72*1.07*1.092=805.89 rounded to the nearest .25 which is allowed

however, if the whole wheel was labelled from europe as being 1Kg, the 92grams could be the weight of the packaging, wraps, films and label which ideally they should deduct from the weight but rarely do, when sold in slices they might subtract the packaging weight

A 160 Click does around 45-50km per litre, that equates to very little baht a week

A Wave 125 can do 70km/litre both has similar sized tank around 5.5litre, the Wave would have range of around 385km, while the click is at 275km, at the current price of 40baht per litre, it's .50 baht per km for the Wave and 1 Baht per Km  for the Click, realistically the 220baht to fill up the tank will last most commuter around month easily, the savings only makes sense for delivery driver if  you only look at fuel consumption

  7. There are still difference, semi-auto can do up to 70-80km/litre while 125-160cc autos are  around 50km/litre

bigger autos like 300+cc would be lucky to get around 20km/litre

but if you ride fast a lot more than slow, it might be more economical to go with autos, modern ones with 4 valve and water cooling can happily do 90-120km/hr. speed while semi autos would struggle beyond 90

I was only told the sale of the A380's was blocked by the courts. Wasn't told much more than that.

Unfortunately no source that I can link to or post here, so take it with a pinch of salt.

The concern was that whoever approved the sale would be burdened with causing a 'loss' and taken to court due to the price to get rid of them compared to what was paid for them

Not to disrail your question but that’s part of my issue. My last ticket was “pay us 500 baht cash now and we won’t give you a 1000 baht car tax (written ticket)”. To me it’s clear extortion and should never be paid.

Even if they do inquire about it when I pay my tax I will bring up they tried to extort me for cash on the side of the road. Not that this would help my case I’m just making a point.

The fine for driving an expired/untaxed vehicle is 400-1000 baht so you can look at it a shakedown for a bribe, or convenience discount for paying on the spot

If they had been legit, after giving you the 1000 baht ticket it must be entered into the 'system' if you paid at the post office you'd have been given an official receipt.

The people at LTO office doing your tax will have no power to do about your situation, you want to make a point go yell in front of the police station, or continue to drive untaxed

renewed 2  pick ups  this year no problem both had speeding tickets, no mention of them when renewing, one in BKK the other at Pranburi, both tickets were not  in the same locationsd/province as the tickets

Was it a roadside speed gun where they flag you down and hand you a ticket or a photo mailed to your address later?

  11. 3 minutes ago, Robert Paulson said:

That’s according to some horrible “news” articles. Do you have any experience with the systems actually being linked. Supposedly people are reporting you can simply go to another province and pay the tax anyway, even with the linked system. Sounds about right for Thailand tbh

I don't have outstanding ticket, but when I taxed mine online there are now a screen that checks for unpaid tickets, and I did check on the government app using my 13 digit ID number and all my previous tickets and all cars and bikes under my name came up, even manual handwritten one that's parking related, not  just speed camera ones

Your card numbers are never revealed to the merchant. They only see a google transaction number. Same with Apple Pay.

That's also why it doesn't work with Bangkok underground trains while physical cards are ok, when you tap in, it could present a unique number and not match when you tap out

Same with shops that link their POS till with the EDC terminal, if you tap with physical cards they send out credit card number to the shop's own POS terminal to store, but tapping with phones don't, or the number sent out is not what the POS accepts as credit card number
