    In what country is this?

most of the good hotels give equal share to all employees,

probably not 100%, the hotel might takes a cut but the paying rate are pretty good

here are some example of what the customer's 10% mean for the employee

this is on top of their regular salary, which might be meagre 9,000 - 11,000 baht a month

  2. engine number is the least of your problem, if you drive through any checkpoints and they see a green plated k-car but has full seats and cabin, the worst is they could seize the car or make you pay back the excise tax,

or if they dig deeper the importation documents might not hold up, certain province's DLT are known to be more 'lenient' towards k-car imports at a time and many were used to 'launder' these cars from supposedly 'scraps' Some might even use donor VIN from a locally available Daihatsu MIra which were available as a pickup and qualify for the green plate

even going the legitimate route, to convert form green plate to black plate, you'll have to pay back the tax difference, which now might be worth more than the car at this point

One way means speeding and more serious accidents. Two-way was what made it only moderately dangerous for pedestrians.

one way and make vehicle traffic one lane only, paint on pedestrian walkway or both side, it'll be full of parked bikes and cars enough to slow down traffic to safe level

  4. what program are they on in their (presumably) thai school? most decent schools has English program,

The Maths/Science topic in Thai school may be of a higher level than the international school but they don't apply it in useful way or for science in poorer school will be book-based only and uninteresting

In English program their text books will be from western course and might be more conductive to their actually learning things

the cram/tuition schools  just teaches them to pass the test

There are private tuition for international high school program like IB and A-Levels for the international school kids, you can have your kids join one of those tuition, but if the other kids in the tuition group get access to proper international school teachings during school hours and your kids don't, it'll be difficult to keep up, plus they'll essentially be learning from two syllabus, the thai syllabus they need to pass and get grades and these supplemental stuff

you can get private tutor who's used to tutoring IB/A-levels stuff to maybe develop a course and visit them once or twice a week

I do not think you mean “service charge”, the typical 10% in the bill is not that.  It is just part of the cost, like the 7% VAT.

ask any hotel employee if they get that 10% service charge and most would say they do, it gets divided at the end of the month, so during high occupancy, their take home pay is more compared when there's no guests

Your question can be looked on in 2 ways 🙂

    answer yes:

When we come to thailand from norway, my wife use her thai passport, in norway leaving, transit amsterdam and arrival Bangkok. No problem 🙂

When leaving thailand she use her norwegian passport in bangkok, transit amsterdam to schengen, and no passport question arrival norway.

Done this last 10 years, no problems 🙂

You sure she didn't use her Thai passport to leave Thailand, Airlines counter would ask that she has relevant visa, which then she should produces the Norwegian passport to satisfy them that she wouldn't be sent back
Immigration would asks lots of questions if someone holding norwegian passport try to exit Thailand without having been stamped in in that passport,

unless they 'linked' her both identity in their system already

most people switch passport in the air and use the passport that give most benefits at the destination country at arrival

Yeah, the Thai waitresses don't think in percentages

You could leave 20 baht on a 200 baht bill and they'd not appreciate it at all, but leave 100 baht on a 2000 baht bill and they'll be happy.

This is why service charges irks me, if you go to fine dining place and order bottles of wine tii, that could be over 1,000 baht in service charges, whereas 200-500 baht in the hand of waiter that waits you will make most people's day, maybe another 200 on the tray for the house to share amongst staff

but speaking with a few restaurateur, especially in town with diverse expat population, some cultures just don't tip at all so service charge all around,  so if there's service charge - no tip from me

It is an issue that has cropped up before and diplomatic passports were mentioned then.

I am prepared to change my mind when I read reports of actual deportations.

Most of the properly rich Kuwaitis ship their supercar car to London and wreak havoc there with no regard to traffic law or parking charge,

these kids are on rented honda waves, I doubt they're truly rich enough to have diplomatic passport

He entered Thailand on an expired passport, if it is "illegal", it is allowed!

No Custody dispute now, I have had Full Parental Control of both my kids for  many years (and their Mother lives in Aus.)

Anyway no worries now, Passport Office at Central Phuket, the staff there are super nice and helpful, processed his passport yesterday, they think it should arrive this Friday which gives us 4-5 clear working days before the flight.

Thai citizen can enter on expired passport or ID card, it's their rights, nothing illegal about that, but if you didn't get the new Thai passport in time and try to leave on the British passport, that British identity has no record of entering Thailand, hence problem

the custody dispute thing is from the perspective of immigration officer, if you were to use emergency travel documents, why is this person taking their child out using convoluted process when thai passport can be issued with relative ease unless there's something fishy about the child not being able to get thai passport

    He's also a British citizen...

that British citizen hasn't entered Thailand legally, no entry stamps in his British passport, so expect a grilling,

even if he got emergency travel document from British embassy, still won't have the corresponding entry in the immigration's computer

which also raises more questions, why is this farang taking thai kids out of Thailand on emergency travel document, is there a custory dispute and he's using this method to circumvent getting thai passport which requires both parent's consent?

you could try be honest wit the immigration at the airport, and use the British passport, showing the expired thai passport with entry stamp

Noted Thanks ....(but we're in Phuket currently)

Not sure how they're organized at Phuket, but in Bangkok Passport offices, after you're done with submissions and photo taken and after you've paid for the passport, you have to go to the Thai Post counter to pay for the postage, presumably they make the envelope/label with your details on, put it together with your application, and at the end of the day and send to Chaeng Wattana to meet your freshly printed passport after which they're sent out, 2-3 days at most,

but if they have to send the mailing label/envelope from Phuket to Bangkok and to back, 5-7 days is quite likely

Yeh agreed but he's 17 and has flown much solo !

Passports get delivered 3-5 Business days according to the Thai form which is cutting it fine!

Do you know for a fact 100% he has to leave on the same (ie Thai) passport...?

(Or actually the new replacement one)

Thai citizen can't leave Thailand on an expired passport, he'll have to get the new one

So this maybe a tricky question.

I live in a house, 15km outside the Pattaya district.

The land is of course in the name of a Thai, but the building is in my name. Building license and everything in my name.

    I have a yellow book.

Until today I have never received any request to pay the property tax, and neither the landowner.

So am I exempt from the property tax or not? And since I never received a bill, should I let sleeping dogs lie?

Edit to add: The landowner doesn't live here, and has another property, where he lives and is registered.

then the owner already has rights to the free  one property where he lived,

having someone on the tabien baan either blue or yellow one will incur smaller rate than the rate for unoccupied land, but not free like owner occupied one

not sure if how you structured the ownership of the building and the land as a lease either usufruct or superficies would you be recognized as building owner?

the property tax law provision are:

sole land and building owner are entitled for tax exemption for up to 50M baht value propety

sole building owner are entitled to exception for up to 10M baht value property,

so they do recognize building owner, but how to satisfy that is probably up to the amphur

  14. are the custom more lenient towards arrival duty free? ie. if you've already brought in booze and cigarettes from overseas to your personal limit, and a quick stop at king power before leaving with a couple more bags of johnny walker takes you over the limit would they catch you for it?

I know they have collection counter for Thais that want to buy things for duty free price before they leave for holiday but don't want to carry the items out, say a Rolex for duty free price, leave for Japan for a couple of days and come back to pick it up from arrivals
